Caretaker tells Whumpee not to hurt themselves (in reference to attempts at self-punishment). Whumpee gets a paper cut and panics because theyâve accidentally disobeyed, so they punish themselves in secret (hurting themselves far worse), to prevent Caretaker from finding out that they were bad.
Caretaker asks Whumpee not to use the stove or oven on their own because Whumpee is still weak and they donât want Whumpee to get hurt or accidentally cause a fire. But Caretaker had previously said that Whumpee was welcome to food whenever they wanted. Whumpee takes that combination to mean that they arenât allowed to eat anything cooked. For a while itâs fine since thereâs a lot of food that doesnât need to be cooked, but eventually Whumpee gets sick from eating something unsafe (raw chicken/turkey?). Caretaker is horrified at their mistake and from then on, overanalyses everything they say to Whumpee, which Whumpee notices and takes to mean that Caretaker thinks theyâre stupid.
Whumpee goes outside without letting Caretaker know one day, and when Caretaker finally finds them, they ask Whumpee not to do that again (meaning not to go outside without telling Caretaker first). But Whumpee interprets it as them never being allowed to go outside, unless Caretaker is directly asking them to go somewhere with them. Caretaker might never find out, but Whumpee is terrified to go outside without permission, possibly even to go anywhere at all even inside the house. Caretaker would find out in the latter situation and be devastated that *they* were the cause of a new fear in Whumpee, when they were just trying to keep them safe.
Caretaker asks Whumpee not to answer the phone shortly after they arrive when they see Whumpee have a panic attack the first time the phone rings, intending the rule to be a reassurance. But Caretaker gets unavoidably called away a few months later, and they have to leave Whumpee home alone for the day. Everything is fine for Whumpee until the phone rings in the evening. Itâs Caretaker, calling to tell Whumpee that they wonât be home until morning and to tell Whumpee not to worry about them. But Whumpee remembers the rule about not answering the phone (a rule Caretaker had forgotten, so they didnât tell Whumpee to answer for just that day), and they donât answer, too afraid of possible punishment, even if they are wondering if Caretaker is the person calling. Caretaker calls again and again, leaving a voicemail each time, which Whumpee hears, but none of the messages tell Whumpee to answer the next call, so they donât, even as Caretakerâs messages get more and more frantic. Caretaker is miles away and assumes Whumpee got hurt or something else happened to prevent them from getting to the phone. When Caretaker eventually gets home and finds Whumpee perfectly fine, they get mad at Whumpee for ignoring their calls and making them worry. Whumpee might take Caretakerâs anger in silence if theyâre still too scared to talk back, or a slightly more confident Whumpee might protest, telling Caretaker they were just trying to obey the rules.
Shock collar that activates every time Whumpee talks, until they're terrified to make a sound.
Then after they're rescued, Caretaker is horrified to discover that the chatty Whumpee they knew has turned completely mute and refuses to speak even after the collar is removed
Having to find new ways to communicate while trying to teach Whumpee to talk again
Permanent burn marks ringing Whumpee's neck
Power-suppressing collar around a super's neck
The Villain clawed and spat and yelled, now they sit in shame, their greatest asset stripped from them
Subdued Hero paraded around like a party favour by the Villain after turning them harmless (or the other way around)
A bejewelled collar covered in rhinestones that cost tens of thousands, but Whumpee would do anything to get rid of it
Or maybe they wear it with pride
"There now, you should be grateful I spend so much on you." "Yes, Master."
Living Weapon/Monster!Whumpee collared so they don't hurt themselves or others
Collar so tight it chafes, leaves bruises, maybe even cuts off Whumpee's air supply
Pet!Whumpee who is fiercely protective of their collar, feels exposed without it, so when Caretaker tries to convince them otherwise it only makes them more distrustful
Team gets captured and Leader is dragged out and collared in front of them, the leash tight in Whumper's hand as they smile down at Leader
Prisoner/guard dog Whumpee who wears a collar as a mark of identification with their number/owner on the tag

A. has been possessed and is now waking up, genuinely confused and in absolute horror, to their teammates who are hurt, fighting for their lives in medbay, and/or cleaning up the wreckage.
B. still is possessed :3 And 'Whumper' is trying to appeal to Caretaker to uncuff 'em.
C. still is possessed, but Whumper let them wake up temporarily. And now Caretaker has to decide between leaving Whumpee scared and confused in the handcuffs or potentially letting Whumper free.
Whumpee that's been so brainwashed that they believe the abuse is love,
Getting jealous when whumper hurts/threatens/preys upon someone else,
Getting anxious and worried when whumper hasn't tormented them in a while because what if whumper is falling out of love with them,
Hearing another whumpee talk about their own torment and getting jealous and sad because their whumper doesn't love them like whumpee #2's whumper loves them,
Feeling unloved and unwanted with care giver because they don't "love" them like whumper did
whumpee who views each milestone like a mission they have to achieve. they know caretaker wants to see them better and the last thing whumpee wants is to disappoint them. they set goals and achieve them efficiently, doing nothing more than ticking mental boxes in a checklist of what they think caretaker wants -- no actual internal change is happening. in fact, they're doing the opposite of recovering, because all of this is just reaffirming their fucked up mindset. they perform their recovery.
for example, a ex living weapon seeing caretaker as a new handler, so they study how caretaker wants them to act. they learn that while their last handler liked them to be seen not heard, caretaker likes to have conversations with them during breakfast, so whumpee makes sure to prepare conversation starters and safe things to say for each morning. while their last handler liked to punish them, caretaker doesnt like to do that and doesnt want to see whumpees wounds, so they take it upon themselves to punish themselves quietly in their own room in places caretaker wont see. while their last handler didn't like for whumpee to have any nonproductive hobbies, caretaker likes to see whumpee enjoying things, so they pick up a hobby they think caretaker will like and make sure to practice as much as possible.
and it works, for a while -- caretaker is happy to see them doing better. everything is well.
until whumpee fails to keep up the act. maybe they accidentally reveal a wound or maybe they say something that tips caretaker off. all whumpee can say is, "i thought this is what you wanted?" and caretaker, horrified, responds, "i wanted you to get better, whumpee. i thought you were better."
and whumpee is confused and hurt. they thought they were doing good. they dont understand what they did wrong. it's okay, they'll just try harder this time.
Whumper forces Whumpee to make a list of all the things they did wrong so they can be punished for it. Whumpee is supposed to hand it to Whumper at the end of every day. If Whumper feels like Whumpee missed something important, they will get double punished. Sometimes Whumper gets mad when Whumpee didn't include the smallest of things.
"remember when you didn't make eye contact with me when I walked in the room this morning? Why isn't that on here?"
Whumpee apologizes and gets beaten twice as hard. Eventually they end up in a perpetual state of analyzing their own behavior for mistakes.
Even worse, sometimes Whumper gets mad at them for things they didn't even do. If Whumpee insists it never happened they'll get punished both for the thing and for "lying".
Whumpee gets so paranoid that they end up writing things down that Whumper probably would never know otherwise, giving Whumper so many more reasons to punish them.
One day Whumper gets mad at Whumpee because Whumpee didn't put "having angry thoughts about Whumper" on the list. Whumper convinces Whumpee they know what they are thinking and that there is no point in trying to hide it.
Whumpee ends up conditioned to write down the "bad" thoughts they have, to be punished for them. They now aren't only desperately analyzing everything they do, but also everything they think. Whumper now officially has control over Whumpee in their own head.
When Whumpee is rescued, the conditioning doesn't go away. On the first day back home they meekly come to caretaker with a list of everything they did wrong, waiting for Caretaker to punish them. Caretaker is horrified by everything that's on there.

Mind control that doesn't go away. Sure, they're out of Whumper's hands, but for whatever reason, the control doesn't lessen entirely.
It's not noticeable at first, but something is undeniably happening.
Their face will go blank sometimes, and they'll snap to attention.
They only speak when spoken to, and even then, they're much too quiet.
Offhand comments are followed to the letter, they let themself be touched and handled and do whatever they're told, no complaints.
When (if) their team figures this out, it complicates things. They can't be as casual around them as they'd like to be, have to monitor everything they say to make sure they don't take advantage of Whumpee.
Carefully phrasing questions to make sure they aren't misunderstood as orders, always leaving comments open for questions or objections... the vulnerability of caring about someone who can't consent to... anything, right now. Even the seemingly normal things.
Rotating around the thought of a whumpee conditioned into behaving specific ways depending on some sort of jewelry or item. Collar? Expected to hehave like a good pet. Bracelets? Be quiet and keep things clean. Rings mean defiant or earrings to act fancy, so on and so forth. I just think it's fun
whumpee who cannot say no. physically. mentally. anything-ly. it was conditioned and beaten and traumatised out of them and now the word can't even form on their lips. they struggle to shake their head. any form of negation they have to express is an insurmontable wall.
Captive whumpee has their own room, or closet, or cage, and when they enter it whumper won't touch them. They are never restrained in a way that prevents them from fleeing to their place. Whumper will lure them out with food or painkillers, with undoing any restraints still on them, with the promise of a shower, and whumper keeps those promises. Whumpee comes to feel safe in their place, and knows that, at least in this one thing, they can trust whumper.
And then the rescue happens, and the rescuers drag whumpee out of their safe place to get them to actual safety.
Whumpee who is cursed to obey every demand they're given
Whumper tells them to run until their legs give out and they have to do it.
Whumper tells them to jump in a freezing lake and they're already in before Whumper can finish, shuddering and sobbing as they try to resist against their own flesh
Whumper getting tired of whumpee's sobs and telling them to shut up. they cant make noise, so their chest heaves and their mouth opens and closes but nothing comes out.
Whumpee being given a knife to cut themselves.
Whumper giving Whumpee a demand before a party and everyone else thinking Whumpee is doing it on their own.
....mmm I may have to write something more about this.....

whumper's rules being so insidious and that they conditioned whumpee to fear normality. 'Pet' all the time but Whumpee's name during punishment. Always on their knees unless they were being lead somewhere Bad. Allowed to eat at a table only when they were about to be lent. Given permission to speak only when they're made to beg for punishment. Taking care of their wounds only as a way to hurt them.
Whumper who conditions Whumpee to associate Caretaker with danger/fear and Whumper with protection. (Think Peeta in the hunger games but less aggressive and more so just scared) And then they send Caretaker a picture of Whumpee with their location and a threat if they donât come.
So Caretaker goes to save Whumpee. Itâs a trap, Obviously itâs a trap, but Caretaker comes anyway because what else are they going to do? But Whumper doesnât actually intend to trap Caretaker, they just want to show them how useless it would be to try to save Whumpee.
So Caretaker gets to wherever Whumpee is being held, and it was actually suprisingly easy to get there? Theyâre still wondering when the other shoe is going to drop, but they keep going. They get to Whumpeeâs room/cell, and breathe a sigh of relief to actually see Whumpee.
But Whumpee looks up at them, terrified, hyperventilating, âno- please, caretaker please leave- I canât-â. Caretaker doesnât know why Whumpee would be scared of them, so they assume Whumpee is trying to warn them that itâs a trap, âI know Whumpee, I know, but Iâm not leaving you, I need you to come with me, okay?â Whumpee, who, from their point of view about to be kidnapped and hurt by Caretaker, shakes their head and desperately tries to scramble backwards away from Caretaker. But their back hits the wall.
Caretaker doesnât have time for this, and they know that after what they went through Whumpee must be traumatized and delirious, so they resolve to carry them out. They donât notice how Whumpeeâs shaking gets exponentially worse as they get closer, they donât notice Whumpee biting their tongue to stop themselves from begging, they donât notice Whumpee flinch when they reach their hands out to pick them up.
Whumpee freezes as soon as Caretaker picks them up, too terrified to move or beg or fight back, simply shaking violently in Caretakers arms. Just like the way in, Caretaker barely encounters resistance getting Whumpee out of there. Once again, they donât notice as Whumpee looks more and more frantic the closer they get to the exit, instead of the calmer you would expect if they really were just traumatized.
Itâs only when Caretaker brings Whumpee all the way back to their home that it becomes abundantly clear to Caretaker that something is wrong. Back during the rescue, Whumpee had looked calm up until they spotted Caretaker, presumably because they thought it was a trap and were worried about Caretakerâs safety, so Caretaker assumed Whumpee would be fine again once they were out of danger. But instead, Caretaker has to practically drag a panicked Whumpee inside, only for them to fall to the floor and desperately scramble away again, âno- please- donât hurt me again- I canât- I canât take it- please, Caretaker, Iâll be good- pleaseâ.
What is there for Caretaker to do now? They try a million reassurances, all getting the same response of scrambled begging. Eventually they just have to get Whumpee set up in a guest room and wait until they can get some outside helpâ maybe a medical professional, or someone from their team. Those people get a, well not exactly a better response, but at least Whumpee can form sentences, âplease help me, Iâve been kidnapped, theyâre gonna hurt me! Please, get me out of here, call Whumper, please I just wanna go back home.â
And how long is it before Whumpee manages to escape on their own, finding their way back to Whumper?
