Okay, this is probably going to be a long rant. I already know some people are going to want to throw tomatoes at me and explain in great detail why my opinion is wrong, why I “don’t understand the lore,” or why I am “overreacting.”
That’s fine. I don’t usually rant on Tumblr, and I honestly was not planning to write something like this at all. I just want to share my thoughts, because this has been bothering me more than I expected.
This started in a very normal way. I was casually scrolling, watching a completely normal Pokemon video. Nothing strange, just regular fan content. I opened the comments, and that is where I noticed this one person.
He was everywhere. In almost everyone’s replies. Writing extremely long, passionate paragraphs about how “Pokemon are humanoid,” how “official lore proves this and that.” At first, I thought it was already odd. Then curiosity got the better of me, and I checked his profile. And yes, this was his entire focus. Everything revolved around that exact topic.
That was the moment it really hit me how a very specific group of people has become far too active and far too loud in certain fandoms, especially Pokemon.
People can have interests. I am not trying to control what people think. But not everything needs to be shared publicly, and definitely not pushed into every comment section of normal fan content. There is a difference between having a thought and forcing it into spaces where it does not belong.
Pokémon has been one of my favorite franchises since I was little. I grew up with it. And let’s be honest it is mainly a children’s franchise. That does not mean adults cannot enjoy it, but it does mean there are reasonable boundaries. And yet, it has become increasingly difficult to enjoy normal Pokémon content without someone turning it uncomfortable.
The issue is with people who aggressively and passionately defend these ideas as if they are presenting a legal case.
What they always do is cherry-pick. They search through official lore, Pokédex entries, folklore references, or single lines from the games, and they cling to whatever supports their argument. They never stop to consider the larger context. They never stop and think, “This is still an animal.”
Fictional, yes. Sometimes humanoid in shape, sure. But Pokemon are animals. They behave like animals. They are treated as animals within their world. And instead of pausing at that discomfort, people rush past it. They choose the one interpretation that benefits them and ignore everything else. And when questioned, the response is always, “It is fictional.” That argument does not magically make everything acceptable. Fiction does not remove the need for boundaries or self-reflection. Saying “it is fictional” feels less like a genuine explanation and more like a way to avoid admitting that maybe this is a strange line to cross.
What honestly unsettles me the most is how much effort goes into defending these ideas. The persistence. It makes me uncomfortable on a deeper level. To the point where it genuinely makes me uneasy to think about some of these people owning real pets. Because if you have to work this hard to justify an idea, maybe that discomfort exists for a reason.
Now, I want to be very clear about something, because I know this will come up: I do support furries.
And I already know some people are going to grab onto that fact and say it contradicts everything I have just said. But it does not.
There is a very important difference between being attracted to animals and people expressing themselves through anthropomorphic characters. Fursonas are fantasy personas. They are imagined characters with human-level intelligence, communication, autonomy, and consent. They think like humans, act like humans, and are treated as people, not pets.
No matter how much lore is cherry-picked or how many arguments are made, Pokemon are still animals within their world. They behave like animals, are cared for like animals, and are very clearly not meant to be read as people with human autonomy. The distinction matters. Liking anthropomorphic characters as a form of self-expression or storytelling is not the same as sexualizing animals or animal-coded beings in spaces that were never meant for that kind of discussion.
I probably would not have written this rant under normal circumstances. But when this kind of energy keeps appearing in normal fan spaces, spaces meant for creativity and enjoyment, it becomes difficult to ignore.
