Douglas Stuart, who had been a fashion designer for 20 years, took 10 years to write his first novel while he worked. He did not have any formal training as a writer. When he completed his novel, he was rejected by numerous agents, then by over 40 publishers. When he eventually got published, he won the Booker Prize for Shuggie Bain...his DEBUT novel.
Not saying I'd ever ever win a prize (the idea is truly laughable), but hearing all that again reminds me it's not so bad to be on year 3 of writing a novel. I don't care how long it takes me, I just want to finish it and be happy with it, published or not!
i wanted to do a quick drawing of ro in her middle age (taking the extended human lifespans of mass effect into account)
i imagine that working as an instructor at ICT is her idea of retirement. she's a tough but fair teacher and enjoys designing complex field training exercises that can really challenge her recruits. maybe she even brings in a certain fellow sharpshooter in as a guest instructor from time to time.
in addition to the burns from harbinger's beam, she suffers from nerve damage as a result of her destroyed cybernetics. her right hand has a significant tremor and she has neuropathy. this significantly impacts her ability to hold, aim, and fire weapons until she creates weapon mods that can accommodate her disability - she doesn't really feel like herself until she can nail a target from a thousand yards.
after roughly fifty years, her skin grafts and other scars would probably be more healed than this, but i got a bit carried away lol. i like the idea of her having some kind of zuko thing going on with obvious facial disfigurement. she owns it
bonus under the cut because it came out a little wonky and i don't like it that much but i do want to share her jumpsuit
immediately post war, resources are stretched thin... she receives rudimentary prosthetics for her amputated body parts; her eye, hand, and legs. the skin grafts over her burns are similar to how we do grafting now, rudimentary by mass effect tech standards.
eventually, when things are a bit better, she is able to have her missing parts cloned and replaced, and upgrade her eye to something cool and techy. the grafts, however, are tricky. they can't exactly be replaced - there is the option of cosmetic surgery, but it won't restore her old skin or fix the chronic pain. and besides, she's had to do a lot of self acceptance work for her scars. she sees fixing it as giving in to vanity, since it would be purely cosmetic. the scars are proof that she survived. might as well keep em around
still, her burn scars might look less pink and there might be less defined edges to her grafts after 50 years. similarly, garrus's scars might continue to fade with time
you have to be careful reading too many things that are good/smart/well-written bc then you encounter something that isnt and you get confused like ? why didnt they just make this good ? were they stupid

The Mandalorian movie was a weird fever dream that felt like a bunch of episodes stitched together with weird pacing. Why do I give my money to these people????? Ugh.
Okay, I followed through and spent a couple hours throwing together a font from these alien characters from the Mass Effect game assets. @crapeaucrapeau @omegastation
Like OP, I disagree that's it's a Quarian alphabet because you'll see these characters everywhere, including on the Citadel and Illium. I named it Trade Script after of the universal trade language that's mentioned in the codex.
I kept the letter designations the same and didn't redraw the characters. All I did was upscale them, sharpen them, and resize them to work as a font. This doesn't have anything beyond basic numbers and English letters, i.e. no punctuation. If I ever want them to be really crisp and pretty I might redraw and vectorize them in the future… but that's a lot of work, so probably not. If someone else wants to do that, they certainly can!
Feel free to use this for your fanworks! I certainly will for mine :)

from "Burn It Out" by Aimee Mann
You know the secrets that live in fire
What is the promise that flames inspire?
Can you just burn it out?
Shadows and memories that won't stay put
Can you redact them with ash and soot?
Can you just burn it out?
Can you just burn it out
So thoroughly
You’ll never see
A trace of yourself in the spark
Can you just burn it out
'Til it's dark?
29. share an adventure you went on?
Hmmm, I can't say I've been on anything I'd call an adventure, at least not in the way we commonly think of one! I've traveled and done things, but nothing that unique. I could bore you with something metaphorical but I don't think anyone wants to hear that right now lol
12. how do you show affection (this can be platonic or romantic)?
Listening is probably my biggest way of showing affection. Or giving time - doing things I know the other person really wants to do, even if I'm not into it (my time is precious to me). Putting my head in my husband's lap.
28. favourite way to spend time alone?
Oh god, is that a thing? Can one do that? 😆I used to spend so much time alone now I don't know how to anymore. At this stage, it's either reading or writing, or cranking up some music and doing art/crafts without interruption.
👏 you are absolutely right!!! When we keep ourselves open to others-- listening and asking--it's surprising what we learn! It's not always something great (I have had some odd encounters lol), but it's always worth it in the end.

Honestly, there have been a couple of people I’ve admired who I met before, and in general I think the old adage is true: never meet your heroes. Inevitably, they are going to be disappointing compared to what you envision in your mind.
14. piece of media that left a lasting impact on you?
That’s a hard one too. I’ll categorize:
Music: Tori Amos, Boys for Pele - probably the first thing I ever listened to where I understood how an entire album could be a single piece of art. Pianos beat guitars; plus, harpsichords are a thing
Books: Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote. Another first - the first time I realized a novel could be strange and fever-dreamish and still work. (It’s also notable as one of my first encounters with queer literature and was studied at a Catholic school. My school did not shy away from literature lol)
TV: Six Feet Under forever and forever and forever. The storytelling. The family. The angst. The joy. The sorrow. The beautiful complication. Life and death.
Film: Ghost in the Shell. Introduced to me by an acquaintance who was wearing a GITS tshirt. It has all the things I love in a film: amazing cinematography (animation in this case), philosophical underpinnings, interesting characters, and science fiction.
15. any “paranormal” or unexplainable experiences?
None whatsoever. I did have a very specific, prophetic dream once involving my body, but I chalk that up to my body/brain connection rather than anything paranormal or supernatural
18. a compliment you’ve received?
Best general compliment: "You're good at everything and it's not fair!' 😂 This was said half jokingly, and no, I'm not actually good at everything (just certain areas )
Most meaningful: an old friend of mine did a gallery piece for International Womens Day with the names of the women who have had a profound impact on his life and MY name was there. Me! It's so weird to think you've had an impact on anyone, let alone someone you only spent a handful of formative years with.
