it really is kind of interesting how attached people are to the idea of the improvised line and the genuine reaction in film. nearly every single famous moment or line has some sort of claim floating around that it wasn't in the script and was either made up on the spot by an actor or was sprung as a surprise on the actors to get their 'real' reaction. you know, sometimes people do come up with good lines in advance and write them down, and sometimes people can pretend to be have a convincing emotional response on screen

btw I am not blaming anyone for this but do you know how bad at teaching most TAs are, and how little support they get at becoming better teachers? sooo much writing instruction is outsourced to people who have never been in front of a classroom before, and to people in the humanities who consider teaching in writing programs to be beneath them, btw. and some of them have been my colleagues and friends, and everyone has to start somewhere, but yeesh. everything’s tight right now but if some minor amount of money could be diverted from [various projects that make universities look good to donors but don’t contribute to teaching], so much could be done !

it’s cheaper: faculty, even very low-level adjunct faculty, are entitled to more money and better benefits than TAs are. meanwhile, humanities PhD students don’t receive the same amount of grant, government/armed forces, and industry funding the way many STEM PhD students do; humanities research has also been extremely devalued in the public eye, which means almost nothing in the humanities leads to increased donor interest or increased university brand recognition (with some exceptions). thus, many humanities PhD students fund their degrees by teaching alongside doing their research, which is why it takes on average 1-2 years longer for humanities students to complete their degrees (though anecdotally everyone I know who has completed their humanities PhD since the pandemic started has taken 8 or 9 years, which is to say 3-4 years longer than the old 5-year standard). that said, yes, this is mostly happening in larger universities with a pool of grad students whose labor they can easily access/exploit. smaller universities often rely on higher tuition, among other things.

something that has come up a couple times, in different contexts, in the past two years is that i am an atheist. and this has been kind of an awkward thing to talk about when it has come up, because i came to this position via nurture (both my parents are atheists, basically end of story). and a lot of people have seemingly just never considered that could be another person's life experience.

#like when this comes up i usually get asked why. and my answer is very boring #anyway i feel like this has to be a way more common life experience. atheism has been around for a while #i did recently meet a guy who is in the same life situation. which was interesting! and also the first time that has ever happened #w.me
