Underrated reason why the DS9 episode "The Wire" is great: It mentions mycorrhizal fungi during a brief conversation between Bashir and Dax about her sick plant, before they talk about Garak. Bashir even says that the fungus is essential to the plant's health and that it helps it to retain water - access to water is indeed one of the main benefits mycorrhiza provide to plants. This mention is especially cool because it was long before mycorrhiza became a widely popular concept.
i hate how pervasive the r-word has become again
its like the 2000s to early 2010s again where talking to anyone theres a good chance they'll casually say a slur without any thought
and whats even more annoying now is people who'll try to weasel out of being called out on it
'oh its fine because i'm legally mentally disabled so i can say it' NOT HOW RECLAMATION WORKS
AND SAME WITH DEGENERATE
STOP TALKING LIKE A FUCKING NAZI

The Ukrainian national anthem begins with the words βUkraine has not yet perished,β hardly an optimistic beginning for any kind of song. But this is not the only anthem whose words do not inspire optimism. The Polish national anthem starts with the familiar line βPoland has not yet perished.β The words of the Polish anthem were written in 1797 and those of the Ukrainian were penned in 1862, so it is quite clear who influenced whom. But why such pessimism? In both cases, Polish and Ukrainian, the idea of the death of the nation stemmed from the experience of the late eighteenth century β the partitions of Poland and the liquidation of the Hetmanate. Like many other anthems, the Polish one was originally a marching song written for the Polish legions fighting under the command of the future emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, in his Italian campaigns. The song was originally known as the βDΔ browski mazurka,β named for a commander of the Polish troops, Jan Henryk DΔ browski. Many of the Polish legionnaires, including the commander himself, had taken part in the KoΕciuszko Uprising, and the lyrics were meant to lift their spirits after the destruction of their state by the partitioning powers. The songβs second line asserts that Poland will not perish βas long as we are alive.β By associating the nation not with the state but with those who considered themselves its members, the Polish anthem gave hope not just to the Poles but also to representatives of other stateless nations. A new generation of patriots in Poland and Ukraine refused to accept the disasters of the previous century as the final verdict of their nations. Both Polish and Ukrainian activists promoted a new understanding of a nation as a democratic polity made up of citizen patriots rather than a territorial state.

Thinking about Kai Winn a lot lately. She doesnβt get nearly enough credit for being one of the most compelling antagonists Star Trek has ever put out and I need people to acknowledge that more. Sheβs complex and infuriating and heartbreaking like she is genuinely a full one woman tragedy and nobody ever talks about her except to call her Space Pope Karen or whatever and Iβm like. How would you act in her situation?
Winn Adami who spent so much of her life imprisoned under fascist regime with the threat of genocide looming over her. Who never partook in the resistance but instead turned to prayer and faith in a jail cell, relied on it to get her through those dark, dark years. Who behaved like the perfect faithful servant, who dedicated her life to her faith, who did everything she was supposed to do. She was non-violent and peaceful. She was dutiful and good. She did everything she was asked to do, everything she could have done. And none of it was ever enough
Can you imagine that? Dedicating your life to something, doing everything youβre supposed to do in line with your faith, everything that those that came before you did to hear their voices, and it isnβt enough? You were good. You never raised a hand to anyone. You taught what you were supposed to teach. And they never speak to you. They could, but they donβt. Instead, this human comes along, and they speak to him. They make him their emissary. They say nothing to you, day in and day out, theyβre silent. You become the leader of your faith and still theyβre silent. How do you become anything else than what she becomes? How do you become anything less than angry? Bitter? Resentful?
Kai Winn is frequently treated like she hasnβt suffered the same as so many other Bajorans, sheβs talked down to about her faith and her people, sheβs treated like sheβs on par with those who oppressed her. And Iβm not saying sheβs in the right- but man, can you blame her for ending up the way she does? She endured a lifetime of trauma by clinging to faith and the idea that if she was good enough, if she listened to the Prophets and did their bidding, taught their teachings, then everything would work out. She would be rewarded. And she never is. Her entire life is a battle that she never wins. No wonder sheβs angry. No wonder sheβs bitter. No wonder sheβs resentful and petty and condescending
No wonder she clings to the first person who seems to understand her. She finally gets someone in her corner, and it all turns out to be a manipulation by the rapist of her world. She literally never wins, she never gets any reward for a life of trauma and servitude, there is never any reprieve. She is her own never-ending tragedy! She never truly gets out of that jail cell. She is never free. In some way or another, Kai Winn is always a prisoner, and sheβs always praying to beings that will never answer her, for a salvation that will never come

as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. If you have a few dollars to spare, I encourage you to send them here to continue the amazing work that Hani and his team are doing.

irritating as fuck when people get mad at Black people existing in premodern historical fiction/fantasy media. like first of all, you're racist. and second of all, you are acting as though Black people didn't exist in premodern Europe which is simply false. especially when we're talking about the Mediterranean, like what the fuck do you people think is along the southern half of the Mediterranean Ocean?? everyone's on boats, there are GOING to be interactions with Black people in Northern Africa, and there are GOING to be Black people in Mediterranean Europe. stop being stupid. your imagined homogeneous white European past is not historical reality, get over it you massive losers
