Chiharu Shiota 塩田千春 (b.1972, Japan)

Chiharu Shiota is a Japanese installation artist born in Osaka, living and working in Berlin since 1996. Shiota’s oeuvre contains various art performances and installations, in which she uses various everyday objects such as beds, windows, dresses, shoes and suitcases. She explores the relationships between past and present, living and dying, and memories of people implanted into objects. To these she adds intricate, web-like threads of black and red. Casa Vicens, Barcelona, Spain, 1883-1888,

Commissioned as a summer home for Manuel Vicens y Montaner, a stock market broker, this modernist building is considered one of Gaudí's first major projects and masterpieces.

The work belongs to the orientalist style, similar to Neo-Mudéjar architecture, although interpreted in Gaudí’s own personal way, with a uniqueness that only he knew how to add to his projects.

Blue glass beads from the Late Bronze Age, found in 1885 when a Danish farmer ploughed up a cremation urn at Kongehøj. Made in Mesopotamia approximately 3,100 years ago, they offer evidence of long-distance trade connections in the prehistoric world.
