Unfortunately the original 1976 production (my fav) can only be viewed as a mildly crappy digitized copy that’s up on YouTube... the lyrics/dialogue are, at times, indiscernible.

All I want is for as many people as possible to watch it. I want you to see it, I want your friends to see it. And I want MY friends to see it.

So it came to this: I made subtitles for Pacific Overtures. The project took me approximately 30 hours altogether (AI transcription was no help at all). I’m hoping everyone who already loves the show will be pleased to have them, and more than anything I hope subtitles will build a bridge for anyone who has wanted to see the show but couldn’t get past the limitations of what’s available.

I’m happy to hear any feedback you might have. (I’m open to making changes and releasing another version if needed.)

(This production is brilliant and beautiful and hilarious and magical and crushing. Plus it has the song Stephen Sondheim said was his favorite of all he’s written. And, as so many of us internationally are doing our best to tread water while Capitalism rots on its feet, the history and ideas in this show are as relevant as ever.)
