one of the best things about supergirl was how human they made kara, in part because of the textual level of her being an alien on earth and how do she and clark fit in (or not) on earth, but also on the level of getting to see a female character (and supergirl of all characters!) be messy and raw and real in a way i don't think i've ever seen a female character get to be in a movie like this.
she's getting drunk night after night and she's not a cutesy drunk. she's sloppy and she trips over things and her dog also likes to get into things he shouldn't but she only half-heartedly tells him no because she doesn't really care. and she wakes up hungover in her clothes from the night before and her hair's a mess and she probably hasn't showered in who knows how long and she uses the bathroom with the door open and then passes out on the toilet. her sink is full of dirty dishes and half-eaten bowls of cereal and her dog is peeing in her ship. earth isn't her home and she's trying to avoid being there but she has vinyl records from earth and she's watching casablanca in bed and she makes earth pop culture references all the time. she's a mess. she's angry and grieving and she drinks to drown out her feelings and she's kind of an asshole and not always very nice. she acts like she doesn't care but the second some asshole guy threatens a young girl, she's putting herself at risk to fight him and get back what he stole. as her mother makes her promise and as ruthye tells her, she's not perfect or nice all the time, and she doesn't have to be. but at her core, even with her heavy, grief-laden heart, she is still kind and good. she is still a hero.
thinking about how kara learnt to overcome her grief by helping ruthye to overcome hers.. they are the sisters ever i love them sm

Its a really good movie based off of a really good comic. i love the supergirl : woman of tomorrow comic SO much and 90% of the changes they made I loved.
Its a movie about a girl and a young woman grappling with the grief of losing their family and being their entire lives being upturned and how they deal with everything following that.
There are things that I personally would have enjoyed more, as there is with literally every movie I have every movie i have ever watched, like with the colour scheme but it is an amazing movie and every man I have seen reviewing it is calling it mid and its PISSING ME OFFFFFF
Yes, it was completely different to Superman bc they are different. fucking. people. with different. fucking. lived. experiences! The pacing will be different because theres different stakes, different people, different time constraints.
it was still full of hope and learning who you are but it was also riddled with grief and a very specific type of fear of losing something that means SO much to you.

Maybe it's easier for me to enjoy Supergirl because I understand it's a story about overcoming grief. It's easier for me to see myself in both Ruthye and Kara, so it's easy for me to enjoy the story.
People focus on the villain being basic or the color schemes not being “bright” enough, rather than on the actual characters the movie is about: Kara and Ruthye.

Supergirl movie spoilers below!!!
Not gonna lie, when Kara stopped Ruthye from killing that guy, I was a little confused, mostly because Kara had definitely just killed a ton of guys literally seconds ago and now she draws the line at the guy in charge? Of course then it became clear as the scene continued on that Kara never cared about whether this guy lived or died. It was Ruthye she was trying to save. But that was true the whole movie, wasn't it? And when she stopped Ruthye from becoming a killer, only to take on the burden herself because that was the kindest thing Kara could have done in that moment? Oof. That hit hard. It was such an emotionally satisfying scene on so many levels. I loved it.
Also The Middle cover in the fight scene was awesome people are just mean or they don't see the vision. But I DO. I SEE THE VISION.

"Ohhh she's so annoying and selfish" she is a FUCKING CHILD. She watched her family die, and hasn't had time to process the grief, and she's like ten years old. I bet you were annoying and selfish when you were ten years old
Thinking about Supergirl again and the importance it places on parental relationships like yes! You are the summary of a family who loves you! Yes, you can never go back! Yes, your mother and your father will live on in you a thousand light years from the house they died in! Yes, you will spend the rest of your life trying to return to the person you were when you were still their daughter! Yes, you will wear your father’s watch to save the dog you found at your mother’s funeral. Yes, you will see a girl who has just lost her own parents. You will look her in the eyes and tell her that vengeance will not solve anything. You will hope that your ache will fade, any day now. You know it will not, you know hers will not. You will meet people you believe to be good and understand when they sell you out for their own daughter. You will watch those people die. You will watch that daughter die. She only had to live moments without her parents. You are not so fortunate. You will kill a man with her death on your tongue. Her parents were not there to do it but you were and your mother asked you to be good. Not nice but kind. You are Kara Zor-El and you are an orphan but not in the way your cousin is an orphan just like he is a refugee but not in the way you are a refugee. You have lost your parents and you are alone except for your dog (inextricably tied to them) and another parentless little girl you found.

Look I don't think Supergirl (2026) is secretly a perfect masterpiece or anything (I personally thought it was like. a 6/10 fun time) but I do think it's wild that Tumblr isn't going crazy for it because this Kara is one coattailed suit away from being a Tumblr sexyman. she is the flawed messy female character people have supposedly been clamouring for. she's the popular archetype of a gruff self-destructive alcoholic middle-aged man begrudgingly having to look after a kid and growing fond of them but genderswapped and also 23. she's allowed to be visibly messy and kind of gross and her hair is constantly all over the place and she literally cries, screams, throws up, and pisses onscreen. she's caustic and mean and puts up an act of carelessness but has a heart of gold. she's heavily traumatised and coping with it terribly. if anything happens to her dog she will kill everyone in this room and then herself. she spends most of the movie in a trench coat and baggy band T-shirt. she gets into bar brawls and breaks a guy's hand. she is Going Through It 24/7 and looks the part. she stabs a guy in the throat. how is everyone else not obsessed with her.
Ok but like. She’s an alcoholic. She’s angry. She’s grieving and it’s messy. She pisses people off on purpose. She cares about her dog more than anything. She maybe kidnapped a thirteen year old. She’s grumpy. She starts bar fights. She hasn’t done the dishes in weeks. She breaks things and hit people. I love her.
