ursula k le guin affirmations for your day:
it is our differences which make us dearer to one another
it is never too late to start loving
the enemy is not the foreigner, but the ones who tell you to hate the foreigner
everyone should have food, shelter, and work
everything is a yin and yang metaphor if you try hard enough
sci-fi is important
So this is not a plea for money. This is something that surprised me, and chatting with people on discord, they were unaware of as well.
Discovered last year I couldnât look at my 2015 MacBook Air without it triggering nausea and migraines, and figured the screen died. Have been getting by on my phone, but concluded I really need a laptop again.
Saved up, realised I could afford a brand new MacBook Neo, and got one.
-And I couldnât spend more than five minutes looking at the screen without massive eye strain, nausea, vertigo, and if I pushed it, I-need-to-lie-down-in-a-dark-room-for-hours migraines.
Looking up MacBook and Eyestrain explained what is going on. The liquid retina displays that Apple currently has uses Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. In order to give the screens a deeper depth of colour and contrast, PWM flickers between several hundred to thousand times a second.
And there is currently no way to turn it off. There are settings and apps to reduce it, but there is no way to stop the screen from flickering. Checked Apple forums, called Apple Support, and the time I could look at the screen kept shrinking. Got the laptop Tuesday, returned it Friday, today is Sunday and Iâm still dealing with a vertigo migraine.
For MacBooks, it seems to vary on the computer model and the software it uses. In retrospect, the issue with my MacBook Air started after a major software update.
And itâs not just an Apple thing. Current Windows and Android screens do the same thing. Thereâs even a Reddit for people who are sensitive to PWM flickers to help find computers and screens that wonât trigger eyestrain and headaches.
So, yeah. This week has been a learning experience. But for those who are prone to headaches and migraines, this may be something to be aware of, cause I was not.

No, seriously,
one of the things that makes autism a disability (and why some of us choose to label it as such rather than an âalternate neurotypeâ) is the stress.Â
part of autism is just being incredibly stressed. overstimulation? stress. holding a conversation? stress. something happening to our schedule? stress. people talk about how often autism is recognized and diagnosed via our stress responses (like meltdowns) because it is just so common to see autistic people stressed because of lack of accommodations to how our brains work.
and this matters because stress kills. stress causes a lot of health issues, or it can trigger pre-existing ones by making certain chronic conditions flare up. i once had a psychiatrist very unhelpfully tell me i âjust need to manage my stressâ when the stress i was describing was things i could not avoid in neurotypical society and canât âjust get overâ. i can do âself careâ all i like but i cannot at the very base level change the way my brain inputs information and reacts accordingly.
i only learned this year that loud noises arenât physically painful for other people. i have lived 34 years in a world in which my friends and family regularly physically hurt me at random just by shouting, and i thought everyone else just thought i was kind of a wimp for not dealing with the pain as well as they did.
like. loud noises physically hurt. itâs like a static shock from my ears to my spine that doesnât stop until the volume goes back down. i thought we all agreed that âthatâs too loud!â and covering our ears meant âouch!â. turns out iâve been dealing with a stressor almost no one else has, my whole life, alone.
autistic people have to keep functioning through debilitating levels of stress that no one else in their life acknowledges or helps them with. itâs no wonder that their most visible âtellsâ are breakdowns.Â
reminder that you cannot call people or things "retarded" around me. we will have a conversation where I explain that I can still tell you the names of 62 people for which I was legally responsible. I will tell you that I loved them
and you will feel like you were being an asshole and wonder why you don't just stop saying it altogether. me too.
if we're friends, you can call me a faggot. there can be a lot of tenderness in that. I got beat up and bullied and just generally treated like a detestable freak by people who called me that word while they did it. hearing it spoken by a loved voice, with clear affection, can be beautiful. it can feel like understanding, forgiveness, absolution, permission, and a thousand other wonderful things. it can be beautiful.
I got called retarded too, but we don't share any special insight into that. it's just a word to us. pick a different one.
a lady with a developmental disability once explained to me that she'd overheard some kids calling each other retarded in the mall we'd visited earlier that day. searching for something to say that might comfort her, I explained that they don't know anything about people like her and so they weren't really talking about her, just being ignorant.
she got angry and said "then they need to pick a different word". and so you need to pick a different word.
don't think this is exclusive to public spaces like the mall or the park or whatever either. she has a tablet and access to the internet, just the same as you do. she can read, write, and make her own decisions. she has a husband.
you don't know anything about her, you need to stop talking about her. pick a different word.
I'm glad this one is still going around.
there are places in the world today that are experiencing 40°C for the first time in recorded history. of course there's no way to know whether chucking billionaires into volcanos will appease the sun god but i feel we're doing the scientific method a disservice if we don't at least try
i know you said we ride at dawn but iâm not a morning person actually. can we ride after lunch

I donât think thereâs anything inherently wrong with relating to characters, âtheyâre literally meâ etc but if thatâs the only way you engage with stories youâre kinda missing the whole point of Characters being vehicles through which we can see perspectives outside of our own. and also youâre going to get upset when the Character acts in a way that is not Personally Relatable to You
proclaiming we're in a lesbian music renaissance NOW thanks to artists like Billie Eilish, Chapell Roan, Fletcher, Phoebe Bridgers, Dove Cameron and Renee Rapp is qWHITE interesting to me (dgmw I like those artists but)........... people are acting like Janelle Monae, Victoria Monet, Hayley Kiyoko, Arlo Parks, Halsey, Kehlani, Syd, Dua Saleh, Raveena, Kelela, and even Megan Thee Stallion haven't been CONSISTENTLY making music about loving women and eating pussy for well over a decade. is it only a "sapphic music renaissance" when white lesbians and queer women do it?
I MADE YOU ALL A PLAYLIST. HERE'S THE LINK đ
you have permission to pick that 2 year old "abandoned" project back up. it's not mad at you for setting it aside. and maybe time and distance have helped ease or erase the things that made you put it down in the first place.
something something extremely sexy when magic users resort to physical violence. yeah i have the power of god and anime on my side but i also have THESE HANDS. i cast Punch You In The Face. i take my magic staff through which i channel the vast energies of the elements and the cosmos and i cast Severe Concussion And Skull Fracture. casting time for xenoglossy too long, chose the quicker route of Stab You In The Throat.
It's the brutal simplicity. The acknowledgment that their target is either not worth it or does not require it. The turning off of the higher circuits required for complicated magic. It's reaching for the backup knife when assumed they were completely disarmed. It's biting someone when they have no other movement left. It's the base humanness of it. Before humans had magic, they had fists and rocks. The lack of barriers; magic has an insulating distant effect simply not available in melee range.
âPut him on his knees give him something to believe inâ has the exact same energy and depth of meaning as anything Hozier puts out on the regular but since itâs sung by Megan Thee Stallion no one takes it seriously. In this essay I will-
To flesh this out a little bit more: both Megan Thee Stallion and Hozier write and sing really sexual songs, but theyâre different in that Hozierâs music is typically âlet me worship youâ while Meganâs is usually âIâm worshipping myself,â which makes all the difference because itâs an acceptance of power rather than the giving of it. Heâs the sinner, sheâs the saint. However, taking their difference in genres out of it, people donât usually seem to take Megan Thee Stallionâs music seriously in comparison to Hozier because a) her lyrics are more overtly and blatantly sexual and b)sheâs claiming her sexuality for herself, and that scares a lot of people. The secret, no-one-wants-to-talk-about reason is that sheâs a confident black woman, which terrifies people way than sex does. In conclusion, Hozier and Megan Thee Stallion are two sides of the same poetic, sexual coin, but people just donât want to admit it. Which is WHY a collaboration between Hozier and Megan would be so powerful that it would change the timeline as we know it yes I will elaborateÂ

Being prime minister of the uk has a higher regret rate than being trans
So the solution is to ban prime ministers
