Gasteruptiid wasps look silly for multiple reasons, one of note being those long hindlegs they leave dangling while in flight. Gasteruptiids are also known for the interesting behavior of swaying those legs almost like a pendulum while on the hunt. As it turns out, this movement is actually to help them locate prey. Like many insects, most wasps have their hearing organs located in the tibia of their hindlegs. Many a wasp have this area enlarged or even comically bulbous. These fat legs are because of, well, fat! Insects typically keep fat stored within their abdomens, but research of the makeup of gasteruptiid legs shows their fat cells are located directly next to their sensory organs, thus acting as amplifiers. So by swinging their legs around in the air, they're able to echolocate the precise location of their prey!
