ACTUALLY I'M NOT DONE.
So while SecUnit is rebuilding itself after the catastrophic shutdown, it has this exchange with Gurathin:
"I don't want to be a pet robot."
"I don't think anyone wants that."
After which, we get this sequence of events:
Arada offers it a job. Gurathin says she should pay it with hard currency cards, which can be used anywhere it travels to. (We learn later that Preservation citizens use a complicated bartering system, so Arada might not have considered hard currency otherwise.) Then Pin-Lee comes in, gives SecUnit some hard currency cards just to have, as well as fake IDs that Gurathin specifically made for it, and tells it that it's not a pet.
LIKE.
Up until the "pet robot" exchange, SecUnit has said two things: "Fine" and a canned buffer phrase about searching for information. The first full sentence it says is "I don't want to be a pet robot." Gurathin holds his shit together until he’s with Pin-Lee (maybe others, but definitely her), and then immediately crashes out hard enough that the two decide to make sure SecUnit has enough hard currency cards and fake IDs to stay on the run forever if it'll make it feel slightly less like a pet robot.
This goes beyond down to clown. They're the whole damn circus at this point.

i think everyone who is worried about their skill doing content in ff14 should watch an ultimate world race. if you have ever felt like shit for not immediately understanding a mechanic you've never seen before, you will be Spiritually Healed watching the absolute best players in the world spend multiple hours and 20 pulls just to make it 25 milliseconds further into a fight. you will watch people just completely fuck mechanics that they have successfully done 30 pulls in a row for no other reason than they're tired and their brain shidded. no matter what your skill ceiling is, the trajectory of gaining competence follows pretty much the same arc. be soothed
Also shout out to Gurathin, who had the funniest opinion arc ever re: Murderbot, from "Am I the only one remembering that this thing is a lethal and untrustworthy weapon?" to "Yeah, yeah, you hate my guts. This kid is fucking hilarious."
(Edit: I do know Secunit is an adult. Gurathin is just middle aged and kind of an asshole.)

the Murderbot Diaries opens from the point-of-view of a character who, from essentially the moment it gained (clawed its way to) free will, has made decisions based purely on two very specific motives:
to self-soothe and self-educate (through media consumption)
to protect the people around it
and this protagonist, who deescalates violence at every opportunity, who takes a thousand personal injustices in stride and only strives to do better, whose first-and-worst-and-most-brilliant act of self-reclamation—literally reclaiming its mind—was fuelled not by its need for freedom but by a desperation to never be forced to hurt anyone against its will ever again.
this person, when choosing a name for itself, a name it has full reason to believe no-one else will ever learn, a name it uses only in its thoughts, a name that serves solely as a personal reminder that it is a person—chooses MURDERBOT? i am thrashing writhing screaming into the palms of my bloodstained hands BABE
