Which isn’t to say that Ellie isn’t smart—but when it comes to planning and forethought and logistics, Dina’s the one. All those books at the farm on animal husbandry and shit—who do you think was reading those? Not Ellie. And to say that Ellie’s “forgotten” about Joel because she’s cracking jokes—that’s ludicrous. Grief ebbs and flows, that’s the insidiousness of it—you can feel almost normal, focused, on task, nearly happy—and then bam—you’re on the floor with the wind knocked out of you. You can crack jokes one minute, and the next—you’re in a blind rage with a steel pipe and a dead girl in the basement of a hospital.
