🇬🇧 Inside the Cattolica of Stilo, one of Calabria's most famous Byzantine churches, archaeologists identified Arabic inscriptions containing phrases from the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith.
Their presence alongside Greek Christian carvings reflects the complexity of medieval Calabria, a region that belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire and stood on the frontier between the Byzantine world and Islamic Sicily.
Monks, merchants, sailors, pilgrims and travellers moved across this Mediterranean landscape, leaving behind traces that still bear witness to centuries of cultural encounters and exchange.

I’m going to say something that might sound crazy. Suicide and suicide attempts are sort of a societal alarm bell that says “something is very wrong with the environment this individual was in.” A living being choosing to take themselves out of existence is the most extreme act of distress there is. The state stepping in to silence this alarm bell by funneling suicidal people into a state sanctioned euthanasia program, normalizing this act through a socially accepted bureaucratic system, is not a good thing. It goes hand in hand with the state’s interest in maintaining the status quo at the expense of the population and the psychiatric industry’s interest in individualizing societal problems to extract profit and aid the existing system. It’s saying “there are no complaints here, just people with sick brains, carry on.”
it does not sound crazy
This Pride don’t forget your brothers and sisters fighting for their rights all over the world.
this was really quickly done so not the best quality, but I was relistening to the audiobook and just HAD to draw this scene 👁

Mesalina (1884), de Eugène Cyrille Brunet
The rise of AI slop & the endless waves of books that feel written to spec by people who are terrified of their own audiences has given me a new appreciation for Anne Rice. It's not even that she didn't give a fuck; she cared passionately and was famously, publicly hurt by the reception of at least one of her novels, but she never let that distract her from her mission of writing whatever the fuck she wanted. No one could write Anne Rice's books except Anne Rice. They are singularly, entirely hers and while I won't pretend she was a perfect person or it's wrong for readers to be offended or uninterested in spending their one and only life on earth reading something that offends them, I also think her work is valuable and humane and also often hilarious and it's not a crime to have a muse you adore.
We do really need to consider this from Farai's POV though.
Your wife is a wonderful, caring planetary leader and scientist <3
She goes on what's meant to be a mundane planetary survey expedition
this turns into a corporate death trap she and her team just barely escape with their lives
after the death trap she gets kidnapped by the corporation that made the death trap due to them not wanting to pay damages
again. she and her team miraculously escape with their lives
after what easily had to be 6+ months she finally arrives home
Your wife is traumatized, unwilling to talk about or address this trauma, and now has a co-dependent relationship with a rogue SecUnit
You and the family are really trying not to hold the 'rogue SecUnit' thing against the Rogue SecUnit. Not its fault. But it is sarcastic and glares a lot and is non-social and has installed literal spydrones everywhere. It's willing to kill anyone who hurts your wife or her extended family. This is, to put it bluntly, a bit of an Adjustment for everyone.
Your wife decides to retire from being a planetary leader. One one hand, you think it's a good idea for her to take the time to focus on her mental health and be with her loved ones. On the other hand, it's concerning all of this has made her give up one of her passions.
One of your older children is going on her first off-planetary survey. This is good, obviously :) It's just. you are all still stressing from the trauma of your last family member's planetary survey.
It's fine. It's going to be fine. Your brother-in-law is going to be with her, and a bunch of your wife's long-standing colleagues, and-- you have complex feelings about this-- the SecUnit. it will be fine.
It is not fine.
The SecUnit and your brother-in-law and your daughter have all been kidnapped by a mysterious force for mysterious reasons.
Now your wife-- who is meant to be on indefinite mental health leave-- is off to save them.
You and your third partner want to go with her. You want to. But you have no skills for this, and family at home you need to care for. So you stay on the sidelines, waiting, waiting, waiting.
THEY'RE OKAY EVERYONE IS OKAY
thank fuck. phew. okay. now they're going to come home and--
what do you meant they're not coming home
what do you mean your child has decided to go to university off world at the school that kidnapped her
what do you mean your wife, instead of retiring, has decided to become some sort of anti-corporate activist
Yeah okay. This is not a conversation to have over the feed with a 2+ month time delay. You need to have an in-person conversation. You'll make a family trip of it; Nana and Sofia will come with. This is a good, normal, family visit
you all get kidnapped
Y'know, this really puts into perspective how Mensah became a big player anti-corporate activist (helped negotiate a wholeass polity contract to free a colony) and then decided not to come home about it after the events of NE. So much so that her wife has to chase her down to talk to her as a family in-person and gets kidnapped en route to that talk. And their kidnapped daughter has decided to settle down and matriculate where she's landed away from home, as it were. Like, Thiago had barely had enough time to get home before Farai et al. left on this trip. That's a wild timeline. Can we talk about that? As a fandom, I mean. I think we gotta talk about that.
what really fucks me up about watching the truman show in 2025 is how it's not fictional. truman is fictional, but the truman show isn't.
there's thousands of truman shows. you find them on youtube, tiktok, instagram... family and mommy vloggers, sad beige moms and now the trend of neglectful moms showing the "reality" of parenting. all of them using their kids for entertainment. each child their own truman; living a life manufactured by their parents, a camera watching their every moment, broadcasted for the entire world to see.
tbh, i didn't even think about that when i made my post and holy shit you're so fucking right

she is so unbelievably real
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.
“There have been lots of AI-generated articles, and those typically get noticed and retracted quickly,” Heiss tells Rolling Stone. He mentions a paper retracted earlier this month, which discussed the potential to improve autism diagnoses with an AI model and included a nonsensical infographic that was itself created with a text-to-image model. “But this hallucinated journal issue is slightly different,” he says.
That’s because articles which include references to nonexistent research material — the papers that don’t get flagged and retracted for this use of AI, that is — are themselves being cited in other papers, which effectively launders their erroneous citations. This leads to students and academics (and any large language models they may ask for help) identifying those “sources” as reliable without ever confirming their veracity. The more these false citations are unquestioningly repeated from one article to the next, the more the illusion of their authenticity is reinforced. Fake citations have turned into a nightmare for research librarians, who by some estimates are wasting up to 15 percent of their work hours responding to requests for nonexistent records that ChatGPT or Google Gemini alluded to. (aph)
This is why the best practice in research if you're citing something in a paper that is itself cited, you go back to the original paper and cite that after you've checked to make sure that's what the paper says.
med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid 😒" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your body’s reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If there’s food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. That’s called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you
I have four kids. I’ve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.
This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldn’t feed them before those instances.
I’m not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.
i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.
every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.
not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.
"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!
