I tell people in movies to JUST FUCKING TALK TO EACH OTHER a lot for someone who would rather die than talk to another human
i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, āone word from you will silence me on this subject forever.ā
because, like, thatās the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isnāt it?
a dude being willing to say, āi understand if you donāt feel the same way about me, and iāll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.ā
so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency
and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy
Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcyās first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).
The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.
When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune ofĀ āactually youāre wrong and you do like me and you should go out with meā and it was creepy af.
Darcyās letter to Elizabeth starts with: āBe not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter,Ā by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to youā. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didnāt do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesnāt romance her further.
Itās totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.
Darcyās first proposal:Ā āYou must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.ā
Darcyās second proposal:Ā āOne word from you will silence me on this subject forever.ā
His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other peopleās feelings and not just his own, but the fact that itās expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how sheĀ feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.
And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.
How surprising is it that Pride and Prejudice was written by a woman, when many romantic comedies are produced and directed by men?
Answer: not at all
200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think theyāre a Mr Darcy when theyāre actually a Mr Collins.

All Hallowās Read fan art! Iāve painted book monsters for Neil Gaimanās horror fiction giving initiative the last five years. I think All Hallowās Read deserves all the attention it can get. Iām quite proud of the little bunch of renegade books they have grown into and itās such fun making them.
Iād love to know which one you think would suit best roaming around Neilās own library, if he had to house just one of them.

Do you think it's a good idea to include my cat's keysmashes in my novel?
Unless your cat is litigious. Technically your catās keysmashes are copyright your cat.
But wouldnāt said cat have to file for copyright?
You have copyright at the moment of creation. You donāt need to file. (Of course, if you are going to sue, you would need to file in order to get statutory damages.)
(I am assuming in this case that you are a cat, that you know how to use the mail service, and that you have the $25, or whatever it costs these days, for copyright filing.)
Things just transpired in my house hold that are equal parts offensive and hilarious⦠Here goes.
So my roommate, Dale, has a gf who does not live with us, but sheās here all the time. So Sunday when my gf was her we were on the couch and we kissed (scandalous, I know) and she saw it, and Iām pretty sure thatās the first time sheās seen us be affectionate, thatās neither here nor there.
So today she tells Dale sheās āuncomfortableā here and wants him to move out because she thinks me and my lady are going to hit on her or something, she doesnāt like living with lesbians, cause itās not ānormalā, so now Iām pissed. Then, Dale goes, āwell you donāt live here, so it shouldnāt be a problem, just stop coming overāā¦things escalated and Dale is trying to break up with her, but she wonāt leave our houseā¦.she locked herself in Dales room.
So, Dale barges in my room wearing a bathrobe and goes, ācall every lesbian you know, weāre smoking this bitch out!ā Then turns around and whips his robe like a capeā¦
And thatās the story of how there are 8 lesbians climbing through the window of Dales roomā¦
Holy shit.
This is glorious
I like Dale. Heād break up with a bigoted girlfriend and he wears bathrobes like a cape. Not everyone would wear a bathrobe like a cape.
Some heros wear capes
I⦠have only seen this in screenshots.

āThe mad woman has been used as a trope for centuries by writers, but more often as a walk-on part: we are allowed short, horrifying glimpses of the mad Ophelia and the hallucinating Lady Macbeth, before they are hurried to their deaths; Bertha Rochester escapes her attic prison to cause fires and havoc, and is then put back before she, too, is sent to death. What āThe Yellow Wallpaperā does is give the mad woman pen and paper, and ultimately a voice of her own. We hear from her, directly and in detail.ā
ā IntroductionĀ by Maggie O'Farrell toĀ The Yellow Wallpaper (via blxckberrying)
probably my favorite thing abt being a millennial is that i can lie on my resume abt shit like being proficient in excel bc i have the common sense to just google anything i dont know how to do which gives me a giant fucking edge over gen x in the job market bc somehow that strategy never occurs to employers and my underqualified ass looks like steve jobs every time i use a youtube tutorial to make a spreadsheet
Everyone in my office sings my praises for what I can do with excel for this exact reason, even though I joke with them that āI have no idea how to do that - but give me half an hour and an internet connection and Iāll figure something out for you.ā I even once specifically said in response to my grandboss commenting on my excel skills, āYou do realize that I just likeā¦google stuff when you ask me to do something with excel that I donāt know how to do, right?ā
But his praise didnāt change at all. There was no āWait, thatās all it is?ā
Instead, he said āYes, but the fact that you think to do that - and that you know exactly how to phrase your searches and how to sift through the results to get the right answer, and you then integrate what youāve learned and use it going forward - is still so much more than any of the rest of us [the other 5 ppl on my team are all mid-40s and up] can do. To you, itās ājust googling stuff,ā but itās still a unique and valuable skill you bring, so donāt shrug off the compliments so cavalierly, okay?ā
And this was coming from an executive with an MBA. Donāt undervalue your googling skills, kids. Itās not lying if you know you can figure it out.
