Forever Young

This variant cover is an obvious call-back to Amazing Spider-Man 601, but let's compare the two pieces.

All the major elements are the same: A brickwork and window background, a city scene outside of the window, MJ in a white top and old jeans, a Spider-Man logo prominently displayed on MJ, Spider-Man is in the scene. In each picture, there's a background element about the title character.

In the original MJ is just a prop. She's there to look pretty and concerned and squeeze her breasts together for the money shot. She doesn't have a waist because she doesn't need organs. She's a love doll, abandoned on the couch while Spider-Man rushes off to do something important. There's no interaction between these two characters. MJ is pretty and sad, and in the background Spider-Man is going somewhere else. In this cover, a newspaper article reminds us that the title character is famous and important.

In Bermejo's cover MJ's clothes are dirty. She's been working, and these are the clothes she wears to schlub around the house when she's got stuff to do. The Spider-Man logo is displayed on MJ's body because she's playing with Peter's mask. She's goofing around with her husband, who is also sitting around in his work clothes. MJ and Peter are interacting with each other in a way they weren't in the original. They feel like they're a part of each other's lives. In this cover, a framed snapshot reminds us that the title character has a family.
