Suppose today is better day than any to post this, so here goes.
I was tasked with waking up the kids cause the rest of the counselors were busy with morning prep. So I make my way to the gym where around 50 kids are in various degrees of awakeness. I'm standing there with the speaker, faced with decision as to what song I should play.
For some reason my mind immediately goes to Bing Bang, which I only have ready in the Icelandic musical version. Why not, it's upbeat, good for waking up.
I would not have guessed how well some of the children would respond to this silly song they can't even understand. In less than a minute there's a gaggle of little girls running, jumping and dancing around me.
And I can't help but feel this warm joy, you know? Like 'the ancient ritual continues' type of warmth and peace. Because you can't tell me the proper way to listen to LazyTown soundtrack isn't on speaker in a gym, surrounded by running children.
One of the little girls even tried follow along with the lyrics, echoing them. Which made me think I should have played the version in our language.
And then I realized I don't remember the lyrics in my mother tongue. I can do English, I can follow along in Icelandic a bit (no singing tho), but my own language? I can do Woof Woof Woof, I can do Gizmo Guy, or You Are a Pirate. But Bing Bang? Nothing, zilch, nada. I've forgotten.
And I've realized how old I am and that these kids I'm watching over have most probably never heard about LazyTown, let alone seen an episode of it. Something that was crucial part of my childhood. But the joy from a silly song was still there, in them and in me.
Idk where I'm going with this. Just wanted to share with people who might understand. I just think it's neat how music can take us back to times when world was easier I guess? Also that little girls of today instinctively respond well to Bing Bang.
So, happy birthday to Mr. Scheving, I guess.
