fell down a rabbit hole in wikipedia about euripides and aristophanes and greek drama and old comedy, and i just really, really enjoy imagining what it would have been like to attend a performance of an aristophanes play in ancient athens. you're going to a festival that has a theatrical competition as part of it, you're in one of the biggest cities of the age but it has the social atmosphere of a modern small town, you're watching some incredibly good and incisive political satire (aristophanes is genuinely a hilarious writer in a way i think comes through strongly today still), and he's literally directly mocking politicians who would have been sitting in the front row, making jokes about people probably most of the audience personally knows, telling the audience they look like shit up close and also how dare they not give his last play first prize, and also this war with sparta that's been going on for decades is stupid and only keeps going because of war profiteers in government ("government" in this case ofc being the political apparatus of what is again effectively a small town). would be a hard atmosphere to recreate in modern times!
