At least answering Howie’s next question was easier; the chuckle escaping him real enough. “ – when’s your aunt NOT on duty, Howie?” Managed the calm, amused tone as if nothing had happened. They're going to have to be careful with this. With him. They're going to need to take it step by step, at whatever speed Howie prefers. A part of her feels like they'll have to rip the plaster off eventually, but this is more like a bandage over a significant wound. Taking it off without due caution and care could overwhelm Howie and just make things a hundred times worse. No one wants that. Not after all that he's been through already.

Clara sighs softly and nods at him, smiling. "I think that's a great solution. I mean, I don't have any say in the medical stuff. I'm pretty sure I'd get a cold hard stare and a reprimand even if I tried." Her smile widens a little. They all know she wouldn't pay attention to it, but the thought is there. "We'll do what we can though, yeah? You can shout the odds at them too when we get there."

"Oh. Whoa." She gets up as soon as he decides to do the same, gently grabbing his arm to make sure he keeps upright. "Steady on there, mate," she chuckles and glances at Ed. her title makes her uncomfortable: like a child wearing clothing three sizes too big, intended for someone else entirely. chloe means well - she always does - but maeve wonders if she's blind to the way maeve would rather stay in the shadows... or if she simply views as helping her by shoving her up the ranks bit by bit. maeve has always been fine with nobody knowing the sheer amount of responsibilities she carries, yet chloe isn't as willing to let hard work go without due thanks.

Some could say Clara has no responsibilities. A merchant's daughter, whose death left her a fine inheritance that had set her up for life. She had no obligations, but after spending the grieving period doing what she wanted, she realised that staying still wasn't exactly for her. She had sold the house, ensured all the staff were well looked after, then squirreled the funds away in a place even she had to concentrate on finding when she returned once in a while. Responsibility, though, is easy to find when you have a big heart. She just thrives on having that in the shadows, with freedom still on her side.
