Spike - Cowboy Bebop: Tengoku no Tobira
It was a curious feeling. A sense that the four of them were utterly alone in this building, and yet, Edward was right. She couldn't feel it before. But now? Once they were deep inside Tyndall it was different. It had grown on her with every step. Surrounded by its walls, suffocated by corridors so narrow and dark they could incite a claustrophobic fear in even the most resolute mind, Kate could feel a pair of eyes on her. She said nothing of it. Voicing that concern would only serve to further stoke their fear and she wasn't about to do that just yet. She could feel her optimism draining by the second. The scientist in her was determined to find evidence to support her hypothesis. Or Lieutenant Southgate's.
She'd been wrong to dismiss his suspicions. She could entertain that idea now. Not for the first time Kate was reminded just how different Edward was to what she was used to. She'd been around soldiers for a long time. Her whole life really. From the moment she'd interviewed him he'd never seemed like one. Usually, when she used the term an 'open book' to describe one of the troops, it was often followed up with the words, 'nothing upstairs' and 'blindly followed orders'. She respected his honesty for what it was. Truth. Unadorned.
The thought stuck with her as they ascended to the first level. Sure enough, there was one of those achingly long passageways ahead. Dark as the floor beneath it. Beside her, Kate could feel Lieutenant Mckay shifting uneasily. Diligent to a fault, the soldier approached ahead of them, shining a torch down the length of the corridor. Nature had penetrated Tyndall even here, in the depths of the building. The walls were covered in green moss and a tangle of dying vines. Other than what the Earth had reclaimed, Kate was surprised to find the corridor relatively empty. The sole exception being a solitary concrete door right at the end of it. Several steps ahead of them, above the first landing, the other soldier was keeping an eye out for any movement. So much for not stoking fear…it had spread like mould in a petri dish.
Her brows knitted together as Ed spoke again. She almost let out a groan. The words, 'perish the thought' came to mind. Images of another late night flashed before her eyes. A mounting pile of paperwork on her desk. An empty coffee mug sat squarely beside it. The hint of annoyance in Siobhan's oh-so-dulcet-tones as Kate explained over the phone that she would be spending another night at work. That daydream ( nightmare!? ) was discarded as promptly as it invaded her mind. The lieutenant had stopped talking. She scrunched her brows tighter.
❝ Edward? …❞ then, she heard it too. The scratching of a needle. Kate's eyes widened, her gaze drawn away from her head of Personnel and towards the Geiger counter in her hand. Her heart jumped. She swore under breath. ❝…I think that paperwork will have to wait Lieutenant. ❞ She moved towards Ed with deliberate slowness, gesturing with her free hand for the soldier on the landing to return to the rest of the party. Confusion marred her futures as she showed him the reading on the screen. The reading slowed as she stepped back. Behind her ventilation mask, Kate inhaled sharply.
❝ I don't understand it. A reading like this one it's a relatively low dose, but even so, there should've been some leakage to the ground floor. The counter should have picked up something from the moment we entered the facility… ❞
His job had chased him around the world – and had often involved him working alone, trying to figure out a solution to a problem that didn’t come with a handbook or other instructions. You learned to think on the spot. You learned to keep your mind sharp and thus not to just rely on what someone else was telling you. It had been the reason he had been good at his job, even though he had never thought of himself as a great soldier. He had never wanted to be one, anyway! Circumstances had led him into the field, just as they had brought him HERE, too. Another job and yet he was doing what he had been doing before the incident. It was ironic. And it made him wonder if the time he had spent in the hospital and recovering, had really thrown of his instincts this much. Was he just seeing things and let paranoia take over or –
But the question was answered in a way, he really could have done without.
The readings on the Geiger counter weren’t all too concerning. A low dose, as Kate stated, and he was familiar with it from missions years ago. What was concerning however, was that there had been no leaks. HOW? The concrete would only manage to shield so much, but – with the building not being in the best conditions, there should have been leaks. Another question was also – WHERE DID IT COME FROM? There had been no mentions of experimentation concerning radioactive material. Of course, there was always the possibility that those who had used the building decades ago had done some illegal experiments, but the growing feeling of unease in the pits of his stomach made him think it just couldn’t be the reason. The Geiger counter would have picked up on it earlier than. Outside scans would have shown something…
“I think I take it back. – I wouldn’t mind the paperwork.” His words didn’t sound as much as the clever quip one might have expected; it was just something to say while the silence grew in the group of four. It grew with the anxiety practically radiating of all of them, too. They knew what they were doing and yet – it was part of the job that you often didn’t know what you were facing. Troubleshooting the unknown. He had really fallen back into his old job, and he wouldn’t escape it now.
A DEEP BREATH, still smelling like the new filter in the ventilator, and he had to face the nightmare they were caught in.
“ – Either we just moved close enough to a very low-level source of radiation, or…” His tone suggested that he thought his second idea was more likely, simply because they hadn’t moved much and the Geiger counter’s needle had started moving too suddenly. “ – Or the source itself is moving.” Terrifying idea, wasn’t it? But not unlikely. Some extraterrestrial lifeforms gave off radiation and could thus trigger the reaction they just had witnessed. Some spacecrafts and the debris left behind were also radioactive when they crashed to Earth. Did that mean they would soon run into some creature from another planet, that had been hiding out here in Tyndall? The location would be ideal. It was far enough from the nearest town that nobody would think of disturbing this place – and also, any sights of a UFO would have been mistaken for shooting stars not too uncommon, when the night sky wasn’t dimmed by city lights.
“I think we have to face the possibility that we are not alone in this building.” No I told you so. No accusation in his tone of voice. He understood why Kate hadn’t taken his paranoia serious, and he was aware that he could still be wrong with his idea now, too. BUT they had to face the fact that the possibility was growing – especially with the needle on the Geiger counter continuing to wander up the scale.

his eyes track over the horizon— rooflines half-hidden by coastal mist, a pier that looks just slightly too still, like it’s been waiting for something to happen & forgotten how. the doctor’s smile is still there, but it’s quieter now, stretched thin at the edges like paper held too close to a flame.
“ cut a town out of history ? ” he repeats softly. a beat. “ easy answer ? no. ” the TARDIS door eases shut behind them with a reluctant sigh.
“ complicated answer ? ” he continues, glancing sideways at her. “ also no. but people have tried. lots of people. & worse than people. ”
his gaze flicks back to the town, narrowing just slightly.
“ there are ways of… editing time. not neatly. never neatly. more like— ” he gestures vaguely, fingers sketching something torn and re-stitched in the air. “ like ripping a photograph & gluing it back together wrong, hoping nobody notices the missing bit in the middle. ”
he looks back up at the town. greyhaven sits there in the distance like it has every right to be ordinary. neat roofs. narrow streets. smoke in chimneys. a postcard trying very hard not to blink. the mist rolls in a little thicker, swallowing the lower streets of the town. somewhere within it, something shifts— subtle, watchful.
“ thing is, ” he says at last, voice low, almost gentle, “ when you glue a picture back together wrong… the missing bit doesn’t just vanish. ” his eyes flick, just once, to amy. “ it presses back. leaves fingerprints. makes itself felt. ”
The analogy is understood. Rip a picture – and she had ripped a few in her lifetime after some dumb break-ups and friends betraying here – and you could never glue it back together. It didn’t matter how much care you put into putting the pieces back together; the edges would always look wrong and pieces were missing. Pieces so microscopic you wouldn’t even notice them on the carpet in your bedroom, but nevertheless big enough to make a difference. So – what was that considering the bigger picture? Had houses been lost? Cracks appearing where there had never been any? AGAIN, there was the tingling, uncomfortable sensation at the back of her neck, but she ignored it once again. This time it was the feeling of something being too close to home.
“ – Why would anyone do that?” She finally asked with her gaze still turned towards the Doctor, even though she had fallen into a confident walking step towards the coastal town. Greyhaven. 1963. Not important enough to be in the history books (like so many things), but still so important that someone had put a lot of work into trying to – hide something? Correct a mistake that just couldn’t be corrected any more?
“ – And I guess that SOMEONE wasn’t human? Or could that technology exist in the 60s and ‘cause we’re getting involved now, we’re changing time again, so said technology doesn’t exist for US in 50 years?” Brows furrowed thoughtfully, even though the questions and ideas came so naturally to her. YEARS she had spent playing pretend; never-ending adventures with the raggedy Doctor and his magic box in the garden of the old house. And in her dreams. Some days she still felt like she was dreaming, and soon she would wake up again.
"I seem to remember you telling me that it was indestructible or was that one of your exaggerations when it come to that dratted box. Sometime I think it can't do half the things you say." Truth be told Alistair was the one who told his men to bring the TARDIS in when the police box was spotted materializing in the middle of a field. It had been far too long. He couldn't have him slipping away without a visit.
"Well, if I have the TARDIS I have you. Knowing you, your attempt to park the blasted thing would have led you halfway across the universe. Your bloody box will be fine and so will you."
And disbelief quickly turned into offence again; his features twisted as if they couldn’t decide, how they wanted to portray his emotions, until they settled for the furrowed brows and a spark in blue eyes. “Of course the TARDIS is indestructible. The ship itself. – HOWEVER, the disguise can be tampered with. Scratched. Tended. Broken. I really don’t want the paint to ship or the lamp to break! I just replaced the bulb!” Hard to tell whether this was the truth or just another thing he liked to say, simply because he was in the mood to complain and it suited him.
The Brigadier didn’t manage to improve the Doctor’s mood much with his words, either. Offence stayed, even if the spark turned into interest now. SO – the Brigadier needed him for something? Even though he had technically stopped his employment with UNIT (if this really was the right word in the first place), his curiosity always remained. And helping an old friend was also not beneath him.
“You could have simply ASKED. That’s all I am asking. Don’t you think communication is key?”
Leaning against the back of the seat, Nicole turned her head slowly, bleary eyes still managing to glare daggers at the boy beside her.
"He did, huh?" she asked, voice edged. If anything was going to keep her awake, betrayal was certainly an option. She loved her business being made known to strangers. Gave her a real sense of peace.
"What... kind of stuff?" One of her eyes half-closed, but the other remained fixed on Shinichi accusingly.
“Oh, he’s only been saying that you’re helping him with his ongoing investigation!” Apparently the Professor had noticed that his statement had been misleading; his tone changing to a somewhat awkward, rushed one as he corrected himself. Shinichi could do nothing but roll his eyes this time – Nicole’s glare throwing daggers at him simply ignored. He hadn’t broken his promise of not telling anyone any of her secrets or how she had managed the information she had shared with him. But the Professor had asked who had been talking to – and keeping too many secrets from the Professor had never worked for him. Despite Agasa’s appearance and his general character, there was still something sharp about him; and sometimes he could look right through anything he said. Perhaps that just came with having known the old man forever.
“I haven’t been talking about you non-stop if that’s what you’re scared of. I mentioned your name to the Professor – and I mentioned that we met at the crime scene. I trust him and while I hate repeating myself: you can trust him, too.” The snide tone would usually have been in his voice, was clearly softened by the condition Nicole was in. The goal was to keep her awake and not get her to jump out of the moving car. Briefly he wondered if the car doors were locked, but he couldn’t make out the car handle in the dark.
At least they would have reached the hotel soon. Just one more corner to turn and the hotel’s own underground car park would appear right in front of them; the sign brightly lit, but the place itself probably deserted at this time.
OOC. Torturing myself by watching another episode of the live action and... no...
Nicole’s eyes practically rolled back into her head as she withdrew a set of sweatpants and opened them in front of her for size. Taking clothes off is a requirement. It could hardly be blamed on distraction. There was a point where you had to chalk things up to stupidity.
“Oh really? Shit, I didn’t know that, I’ve never changed before. You want me to get changed right here?” If it didn’t filter in through his thick skull at some point, she was going to have to abandon this game, disappointing as it would be.
She shut the drawer and opened the one above it to pull out the hoodie, draping both over her arm. She’d figured there’d be something. His size wasn’t too different from hers. Her gaze drifted to the blind-covered window and unfocused as she considered the conditions she had come in from. The torrent was well muted in here, but it was unrelenting outside. There was very little chance it’d be over before the day was done. “It won’t,” she said flatly.
Slowly he’s getting annoyed. Why doesn’t she just do what he had suggested, so that they can start with the IMPORTANT part of this meeting? – Of course she doesn’t know that his time as himself is limited, but frustration at the fact that they had not even started the sketch yet nor had come any closer to the solution of the mystery, was somewhat covering this fact up, fuelling his impatience only more.
Eyes are rolled at her comment, too. What the hell was that about now? What had she expected, after all? Dumb questions received dumb answers.
And he remained oblivious for a moment; turning on the chair, so he could look at her properly and raising his eyebrows at the question she asked him this time. What… THEN the penny dropped. The ambiguity of his words becoming clearer to himself, but instead of blushing at it (as he might have done talking to Ran), he only rolled his eyes once more.
“ – I thought I was being clear enough. You can get changed in the bathroom. You can even take a shower before if you want. I’m going to stay right here and continue something else I’m currently working on. Do you think I’m some kind of creep or something?”

" buddy, i don't know how to tell you this but you really should be careful about which bounties you pick up on. probably don't go after a millionaire who has moi as a bodyguard. " he has to resist a chuckle at that. pretending to be his own bodyguard, that's gotta be one of the best jokes he's ever played.
Jet’s contact had warned them there was a bodyguard – he just had forgotten to mention one tiny detail. Totally unimportant, of course. Why would you need to know that the bodyguard was not only heavily armed but also stuck in a metal suit, reminding Spike somewhat of a mix of space suit and those worn by miners on the unpopulated moons of Jupiter. Why would you need to know that a simple handgun would do nothing at all, and you’d risk getting hit by your own bullet…
It was not his day. It really wasn’t.
“Listen, buddy.” The gun remained pointed at the other’s chest, even though he wasn’t dumb enough to shoot. Yet. “There’s quite the bounty on your boss’s head. Don’t care whether he’s a millionaire or not. I want my cut of the money. You an’ your tin suit are not gonna stand in my way.”

HEADCANON. Spike grew up in the Syndicate – which seems to follow old-fashioned, patriarchal structures, with the Elders being the three male leaders. All other members of the Syndicate we are introduced to are also male, since Julia is often only associated with the Syndicate through Vicious, but not really named a member of it. Same goes for Annie, who is only associated with the Syndicate through Mao and possibly her late husband. Thus, and considering the Syndicate is inspired by real-life organisations, which are mostly male-dominated with heavily ritualised hierarchy structures (often not allowing women to become members or raise up in ranks), the assumptions lies near that Spike grew up surrounded by men and learning only from men, which also led him to have very old-fashioned views on gender roles. Gender itself is something interesting in the Cowb.oy Be.bop universe, because some stereotypes seem to have died out as well as some aspects such as names being assigned a gender, while others still seem to exit. For Spike, the whole “lone wolf” thing, often associated with leading males in old cowboy movies, is still part of the role he thinks he has to fill as a man, who left the Syndicate and the roles he had been assigned there – which were also heavily influenced by stereotypical ideas of what was a “man’s job” and what not.
Growing up surrounded by men filling there roles without questioning it, also means Spike never questioned his own gender identity. He was raised as a boy / man, and he just goes with it. Even after leaving the Syndicate, he is just neutral about the whole attribution – also because he’s such a lackadaisical person, who thinks everything else would be “too much work”. HOWEVER, after faking his own death and escaping the Syndicate, he’s thrown into a world that is different from what he’s known. Of course, he had contact with the world outside the Syndicate and worked there, but he never really talked to people, never heard much of their ideas, problems or struggles – and now the does. He had to learn to question the structures he had grown up in since he was around the age of seven, which also goes for learning more about gender, their representations and also simply how women are viewed in the world / universe.
I think the very old-fashioned male-dominated world he knew before, clearly shapes how he perceives the women in his life and why he acts the way he does around them. Annie, a person he clearly trusts, couldn’t know about his plan to leave to protect her, because she was a somewhat maternal / older sister figure in his life, too. Julia is put on the pedestal because she’s something special; not only navigating both worlds but keeping a kindness to her, that he didn’t know from the men who controlled his life. But that's another post!

"I don't want it," Gordy shakes his head, deliberately not moving to pick up the box of tablets on his nightstand. Yeah, they'll make him feel better - but they also taste disgusting and they'll stick in his throat and make him gag and he already feels gross, so why should he make himself feel even grosser? It's bad enough that he's stuck in bed, too restless to sit still and accept his fate, but too ill to get up and do things ( he can't even read for longer than ten minutes without falling asleep at the moment --- he's lost his place three times already! ).
The most he can do is huff and pull the covers over his head, pretend like he doesn't exist in the hopes that his dad will forget about the medicine he's supposed to take every four hours.
“Come on, Gordy – they make you feel better, don’t they?” Years ago, when they had found out they were going to be parents, Ed had sworn to himself he would never lose his patience with the child – and when Moira had joined their family, he had sworn the same would be true for multiple children, too. And he tried. His tone now was also still a long way off becoming irritated or annoyed; just hanging somewhere between neutral and amused at his son’s protest. He understood. He made an effort to understand and Gordy had already, loudly, declared that the medicine was gross, the first time he had taken one of the pills. But if it helped…
Sitting down on the edge of his son’s bed, he ran his fingers over the blanket Gordy had pulled over his head – and then tried to gently remove it.
“I know they taste horrendous, but the doctor said they’ll make you feel better. And you want to feel better soon, don’t you? I know this whole thing is just frustrating, and you’d rather be out playing football or at least read one of your books, so – the tablets it is. I could go and see if I can find some biscuits for you to have afterwards to wash away the taste? Cup of tea with it? That didn’t upset your stomach yesterday, did it?”
“Are you sure? You’re small enough.” Nicole crossed her arms, leaning against the wall with a sigh, though her sharp eyes remained on the boy. She was ready to grab him, if need be. What was it with this family and butting into things they had no business in?
And why hadn’t he let on about the kid?
“Figures he wouldn’t want me corrupting your tiny brain. Except you’re exactly as nosy as he is. What’s your name, Squirt?”
It took all his self-restraint not to roll his eyes on the outside and thus break the role he had fallen into somewhat TOO easily. He had to play along, even though he wondered if she really thought she had become this important in his life and that he had REALLY thought she would be the one corrupting a child. Whatever comment he could have made about it, was also swallowed, reminding himself of WHY he was playing along. She had known the victim – and while she wouldn’t show her emotions all too clearly (especially not in front of a kid), he knew all too well what the death of someone you knew could do to you.
“ – It’s not Squirt! – It’s Conan! And I am definitely not in kindergarten any more and even if I was, I definitely knew then too, that that’s a music instrument. I know a lot of things. Uncle says sometimes I know too many things…” Well, at least that was not a lie.
Arms crossed to mirror Nicole’s pose, he briefly considered his chances trying to run past her – and then decided it hadn’t worked the first time and with great probability wouldn’t work the second time around. He should have taken the antidote this morning, but Haibara’s voice was still echoing in his mind. He needed a break from it. And not many things were quite this frustrating.
“ – You’re not going to let me have ONE look? Please?”
