Despite the brief stab of guilt he felt over Maeveβs clear reluctance, Carter flashed a relieved little smile when she stammered out an affirmative β or at least, as close to one as he was likely to get.
βIβm sure,β he promised. βLetβs get you checked out, and then Iβll escort you to the parking deck.β
Placing his hand beneath her elbow, he gently encouraged her to rise off the examination table, and then he walked her out front so that Jerry could go over her discharge papers.
Although Maeve still appeared wide-eyed and uncertain, Carter found that the more helpless she looked, the more he wished to aid her. It bothered him, thinking that somewhere out there, some man was potentially plotting to batter her all over again. If there was one thing he didnβt tolerate, it was senseless abuse.
With his free hand tightening into a fist, Carter splayed his other against the small of her back, and then after gathering a few things from the break room, he led her out into the parking deck. βIβll follow you,β he reminded her, indicating his own car. βI have a good feeling about this, okay? I wonβt let anything happen to you.β
Hesitant, he laid a hand on her shoulder and squeezed. βYouβre not alone, Maeve. No matter how much you might feel like it. And I have a card, soβ¦if you choose to accept, you can call me, too. I try to answer all of my patients whenever I can.β
