Sometimes a person isn’t interested in being your friend.

They’re only interested in you being theirs.

I read “The Stranger Beside Me” by Ann Rule in high school. Rule knew Bundy personally before he was caught. They worked together on a suicide hotline. Like WHAT? That book was so horrifying that it made me understand the death penalty. (To be clear, I do not support the Death Penalty. But I will never condemn it for 1) the Nuremberg Trial and 2) Ted Bundy. He was an absolute monster and there is no doubt whatsoever that if he’d managed to escape he would have killed more women).

Now it’s like the passage of time has made him a fictional villain, and it’s OK to love him because he was “hot” (????ok) and “charming.”

In this social climate where neo Nazis are called “good people” by the despicable leader of the US, we absolutely have to do better than allowing ourselves to be taken in by toxic white men with “good looks” and “charm.”

Netflix (and the Zack Efron film) may have thought they were offering a valuable message about deception and evil, but it’s not the message people are taking from it, any more than people are taking that message from the truly fictional Star Wars sequels.

It’s a problem. We’ve been SAYING it’s a problem long before the You and Bundy fiascos, but everyone said we were “reverse racist.”
