Naomi Osaka at 2026 Wimbeldon wearing Hana Yagi
I don't want to buy mass-produced garbage from a big box store so I go to etsy but half of etsy is now dropshipped mass-produced garbage or AI slop so I go to the local arts and crafts street market but a ton of those booths are also selling the same generic plastic objects or identical stickers or 3D printed dragons so WHERE do I buy real trinkets and art from sincere freaks
Mayhem Marketplace.
Like Etsy used to be except artists keep their money and the site is run off of a yearly fee for hosting stuff and some non invasive ads. There's other stuff, but the point is that the artists don't have to share a percentage on what they sell with the site.
It's part of a larger project called Mayhem Hub whose goal is to create a system that doesn't rely on corporations or the government to provide financial stability for artists. There are other aspects to the project, but the marketplace is the relevant part for this.
Ohhh interesting. I poked around a bit and randomly found this very pretty art piece that I couldn't resist.
Definitely going to keep this place in mind for gifts in the future.
@c3rvida3 makes some excellent weird art and trinkets for genuine freaks 👍💖

It's so sweet of you to mention me, but there's actually kind of the same ethics problem with a lot of the materials I use!
Disclaimer: Almost all of my materials are thrifted, donated to me, or sourced from Buy Nothing groups where people are giving away art supplies.
The problem with the Buy Nothing groups is that a lot of the stuff people have to offer is from Shein or AliExpress.
People think a decent workaround to this is, "Oh, you can buy the SAME EXACT MATERIALS from this mom and pop Etsy shop or your local craft store," but the thing is, Etsy shops that supply beads and charms are often just curated Shein/AliExpress products that they dropship, and the stuff that the craft stores sell comes from the same manufacturers and is just more expensive. It's not like there's an Evil Factory where Shein an AliExpress get craft supplies, and then a Nice Factory where Michaels and Etsy resellers get craft supplies.
I'm NOT saying this to pull the, "There's no ethical consumption under capitalism," card in a completely misunderstanding way where I think you might as well just buy from Shein because everything sucks; I'm saying that it's just almost impossible to find anything, even if you can afford to pay more, that doesn't come from exploitation.
I personally feel like getting donations of unused stuff or picking things up from craft trades is an okay compromise. I think it's better for me to USE the things someone who totallyyyy thought they were gonna start a jewelry business in quarantine manic spent $500 on than it is for them to be thrown away. But it's not a perfect solution! There isn't one! When people say there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, they mean that no matter how hard we try, we're backed into corners like this every time we need or decide to make a purchase, and the only way to get around it is to not purchase anything. I think it's still important to do what you can when you can when it comes to making educated choices about the companies you support, but it's just that. You can often only make educated choices, not ethical ones.
A lot of people argue that if there's no way to make art that's 100% free of sin, then you just shouldn't be doing it because it's not necessary, but I don't know that I agree with that. A life without art isn't a life I want to live! But then that makes it seem like I think my right to have fun supercedes other people's right to fair working conditions and basic necessities, which obviously isn't what I believe either.
I know that a lot of the time people interpret nuance as neutrality or a lack of opinion altogether, so I'm sure people are gonna get weird about this, but!!!
australian sour patch kids have gluten in them i am truly at my fucking limit im crashing out im waging war against wheat idgaf anymore
oh is that one of those things where ableist companies put in traces of common allergens so they can just avoid the cost of making it safe
WHAT
A trend we predicted in 2016 continues.
US based but it’s similar reasons in other countries. and of course many companies have international locations. idk if that’s why it’s happening with sour patch kids but this is a thing
I cannot even explain how ANGRY I am at this.
My nephew is very allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. Last year my sister discovered all hot dogs and hamburger buns now contain sesame. Not "may contain", but listed in the ingredients. This year basically every brand of sliced bread also now contains sesame, making it very difficult to find bread items he can eat.
They're just adding it to their products, so they can just list it as an ingredient and not bother with worrying about cross contamination. And they aren't even bothering with telling anyone. Capitalism is going to kill us all.
"Which brings us back to Kellogg’s. Back in 2016, the company found a way around the added burden and expense of complying with the FSMA: they simply began adding trace amounts of peanut flour to their cracker products. Doing so allowed them to list peanuts as an ingredient of the product, freeing them from having to prevent cross-contact.
At the time, Kellogg’s notified Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) about the impending change and left it to them to warn the allergic community. In this case, Pearson’s didn’t even bother as near as we can tell."
I wonder if that’s part of the reason behind my seeing an upswing in products adding corn starch or corn flour to things that didn’t have those before? <- rhetorical question, because I’m certain that’s what’s going on.

every year is the year of fat women with glasses
250 years and most native tribal groups continue to not be federally recognized. Embarrassing!
Hey so a small thing that literally everyone who sees this is capable of is correcting any “used to” statements about native people in this country.
“Native people used to live in this National Park” No. They still do.
“Native people used to tell these stories-” No. They still do.
“Native people used to use this plant as a natural remedy-” No. They still do.
Better yet, familiarize yourself with the tribes local to you. Odds are, they do not yet have federal recognition. You can still read the stories they have to share, you can share their ongoing battle for recognition with others, you can sign petitions and spread the word to others to do so as well. But do something.
Poorly aged things.

Nana Visitor said that whenever they would try to renegotiate contracts between seasons for Deep Space Nine, Paramount would threaten to kill their characters in a shuttle craft accident and refused them.
No need to support Paramount, watch it all here!!!
I think some of you people need to google amatonormativity… and like, think about it.
you can actually desire a traditional romantic relationship AND unpack amatonormative ideas within your mind and life. they are not mutually exclusive!
“How did eridians achieve space flight without computers?” I don’t know Ryland how did you figure out space flight without an elevator question. You guys strapped yourselves to a bomb and hoped it worked question? Who is more insane here question?

I feel like the fanbase doesn’t talk about how funny it is that when Grace tries to remember if he’s ever had a wife he wonders “am I divorced? Gay?”
Like just. Man wakes up and doesn’t remember his own sexuality. It’s tragic on some level but I genuinely thought that was hilarious. Imagine Grace taking a moment to look up pictures of male celebrities to try and sus out whether he is, in fact, gay.
Ok this is the funniest idea by far. Fanfic where Grace takes the am i gay quiz and gets inconclusive results

This is UNTRUE!!!! If you’re new to Catholicism you HAVE to listen to MEEEEEEEEE. Here’s my advice:
Leave
really good and important tags
i dont care if Monday's lit. Tuesday Wednesday touch my clit. Thursday i don't give a shit. it's Friday I'm in love
i cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you should ideally give birth in a fully equipped and staffed medical facility or if you insist on giving birth through an alternative method you should be within minutes of a hospital and i mean under 5 minutes if you’d like me to be really fucking frank
like i can get on board with so much feminist theory and stuff, truly, and i do acknowledge that obstetrics and gynaecology as a field holds blind spots that are egregious (e.g. infant and maternal mortality in the black community) but there is no empowerment in risky birthing practices that our foremothers, and i’m not mincing words, often suffered through. birthing is natural, but it is not “easy” or even “innate”, it is best practiced guided and witnessed by those that know what to do in an emergency. you are not reconnecting to any innate feminine nature by practicing dangerous birthing practices—you are recreating a time when the bodies and lives of women barely mattered and it was expected that death would/could occur at insane and tragic rates.
this is a hill i will spend the rest of my days fighting on because while i am not interested in birthing children myself, i have an incredible passion and interest in the field of labour and delivery. it’s been one of my greatest joys to play even a small part in delivering neonates. i do not want anyone to risk their babies over a deeply, deeply misguided idea of free birth being “the natural way” when natural is not always synonymous with the safest way.
So many people think it's either midwife or doctor. It's not. Have your midwife or doula in the hospital room with you, I promise the doctors don't give a shit. Hell, you can have her do the delivery itself and just have the doctors there as emergency backup! But for the love of your baby, go to the fucking hospital.
yup. a lot of hospitals are willing to work with you to realize your birthing plan as much as they can within safe limits and parameters. my hospital is closely and highly allied with midwives all up and down the coast, with the explicit instruction to call the midwife when we know a labouring patient is about to deliver so we can respect their plan. genuinely, you can have almost any kind of birth you want—just make sure that there are qualified professionals in attendance, and it’s not just midwives or OBGYNS you need. you have no idea when you’ll need a respiratory therapist on call, you have no idea when you will need a blood transfusion within minutes or risk certain death, L&D nurses do not have the same training as NICU nurses if a baby declines rapidly. it’s a literal thousand things that can go wrong and you should be in the best place for them to go wrong.
And please, please, please do not get pulled into the "free birth" propaganda. Babies have died (including the baby of a prominent "free birth" influencer) and women have suffered irreparable harm.
1. Start prenatal care as soon as you know you're pregnant.
2. Plan to give birth in a hospital.
2b. If you absolutely will not plan to give birth in a hospital, give birth with an experienced midwife in attendance who WILL transfer you to a hospital in an emergency. Emergencies do happen in childbirth and can be fatal.
2c. If you have a precipitous birth (happened to a friend of mine), please let a loved one or the nice paramedics take you and the baby to the hospital to get checked.
Insurance companies will often actually pay for a doula! Even if you have kinda shitty insurance! It's actually more cost effective to have a doula do most of the work, and the doctors just around in case of emergency. When my sister briefly worked for the dark side (United) her main job for a while was doing the stats to show how cost effective they are.
Can you imagine being Gandalf? Getting shit from other wizards because you have a thing for hobbits and you're just like, okay. Okay, maybe I'll temper my fascination with hobbits.
This Ring quest will have two hobbits. Maximum.
Then they all get to Rivendell and have somehow multiplied into four hobbits. And it's like. Okay. Maybe the others are right.
Maybe this is too many hobbits.
We have as many hobbits as we have not-hobbits.
But damn it, you just don't want to get rid of any of these hobbits. Screw it! Everyone can deal. Four hobbits. This is a four hobbits problem.
So away you go.
And things go bad in the worst possible way.
Over and over.
You've lost your hobbits. You've lost yourself. The fellowship has been separated.
It takes everything in your power to help the humans defend themselves, bringing them together to save Rohan. Finally, as things begin to look upright, you're ready to face the war with everything the Rohirrim have left.
You're ready to face him. This may be the hardest battle you've ever fought. But you ride.
Then you get there and two of your fucking hobbits are sitting there like "Yeah, while you were gone, we raised a tree army and beat Saruman's ass. Wanna help us loot his tower?"
....
There were not, in fact, too many hobbits.
This was a four hobbits problem.
A wizard neither underestimates nor overestimates the number of hobbits needed for an equation. He, er, always has precisely as many as he needs to.
