The second piece in my attempt to make OFMD art for every colour in the Gilbert Baker Pride Flag this month! This was a difficult one to decide on, but it’s the beginning of their new lives in so many ways, so I thought it would fit well, and, y’know, blood and smoke and fire and stuff 🥰

First one was easy because it’s my favourite colour, AND one of the best things to draw them doing, I hope you like it! 🥰

I wanted to talk a little bit about the process of making this because I'm reading all your notes and want you to see how easy it is to do yourself.

- I have never done bead embroidery before so this was me learning as I go. It was actually really easy - I worked in small groups of beads and then anchored between each bead (I followed a v simple YouTube tutorial for this). The beads were all thrifted from necklaces I found in charity shops. This saved me a lot of money (I spent a whopping £2 and have lots of beads left)

- I used a royalty free clipart of an astronaut, which I printed on to wash away stabiliser and stuck on to the tulle. I have never embroidered on tulle before but I know from past experience with stabiliser that thicker layers are best for keeping the thread flat at wash away. I doubled up on the tulle and it worked well enough.

- There is a second layer of tulle under the main one consisting of just glitter and sequins . My initial plan was to double up on display hoops to give the piece more dimension. I may experiment and see how it looks when I get the display hoops but im happy enough at the moment.

- I didn't time myself other than knowing it took at least 5 hours to do the single layer of glitter and sequins because I watched PHM for most of it. I couldn't find my tweezers so took frequent breaks to desticky myself. I started on May 2nd and it took till the end of the month with frequent breaks. At a rough guess I'd say 16 hours minimum; it's probably more because it took me ages to start the embroidery properly as I wanted to use metallic thread. DO NOT DO THIS IT IS THE LITERAL DEVIL. Then the thread I DID use was a cheap skein out of my stash and it was AWFUL too. For the love of god just use DMC.

- I used watered down PVA glue to stick the glitter down. Watering it down allowed it to keep the pattern of the tulle and not then into massive chunks . Ideally I would have had a spray adhesive but oh well. I used heavy duty fabric glue for the sequins which was fine but next time I would look at options that dry clear because this did not.
