According to sources nodding along to a coworker’s story about vacation home rentals, the conversation happening between strangers at the other end of the communal table at the Ocean Walk Café sounds way more interesting. “I can’t tell exactly what they’re talking about, but just listen to them—they’re having a blast down there,” said restaurant patron Daniel Beech, who was forced to endure three consecutive griping anecdotes about departmental paid-time-off policy while peals of harmonious laughter rang out from the livelier, more engaged, clearly mutually supportive group less than six feet away.

For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.

God I really cannot express how much I despise the UK government for their impending social media ban for under-16s
I owe my life to the trans woman on tumblr who told me how to get DIY HRT when I was 15. Even though I didn't act on it for a year, just having the knowledge was the most power I'd had in a long time. I'm not sure I'd have survived without it.
Of course, this is entirely the point of this reactionary shift.

so in the uk you will be ably to apply to join the army at 17 but not use your phone after 8:30pm. that makes sense
um actually you can join the army at 16
but you need your mum to write you a permission slip
real talk i have become a problem recently. the hospital wanted my fingerprint and i said no. the receptionist was like: but its such a convenient way to check in! and i said ok i dont want you to have my biometric data. and she was so baffled. i said, can you not check me in using an id card?
well of course but dont you want to provide your biometric data for your convenience?
nope thanks!
fuck this happened again i was buying some LPs and the clerk was like: can i have your email? and i was like no.
she full on stared at me. she was like: but i need to put you into the system.
and i was like: need to? you NEED to? i don't want to give my email
and she was like: but...how are you going to return items without an account?
and i was like, with a fucking receipt??? wtf is going on right now. if i can't return them i guess i'll die??whatever
we all need to start saying no.
I think the thing that annoys me most about AI on a personal, day to day, level is what it has done to grammar checkers. If you've never done a lot of editing, or used to 5+ years ago but haven't really in the last couple years, I can't even begin to describe how fucking BAD this shit has gotten. And as an author it is EXHAUSTING.
I just want to catch spelling errors and accidental double spaces and repeated phrases and whenever I use the wrong too/to or affect/effect and shit. But no. They've shoved AI up the ass of every grammar checking software out there and now they all fucking suck and make the most random, obnoxious, nonsensical suggestions.
And yeah, I can ignore all the times it's trying to get me to cut out any semblance of my own voice, or shove things into the wrong tense, or make the most random suggestions on comma usage. But if it's getting all that WRONG, what is it just straight up missing that I SHOULD be correcting? What real spelling and grammar errors are still lurking in there?
"Use Libre Office."
I get why people keep saying this (and other versions of it like "Use Adobe alternatives" and "Use Google product alternatives."). But here's the problem: I do not create in isolation. Even my own 100% personal projects are getting sent to other people whether it's editors or printers or beta readers and unless every single person in that train is using the same products, things can get wonky.
Libre Office and Word handle formatting differently on the back end, which can completely break documents if you move them back and forth between the two. So if I write in Libre Office but my beta readers are still using Word, when I send them a manuscript for review there's a good chance things won't look right and my beta reader will not actually be reviewing what I sent them.
Industry standards are industry standards FOR A REASON. Having everyone on the same workflow can be crucial to getting things done effectively and correctly without creating a lot of extra work. And those things are not going to change overnight, as much as we might want them to.
:| :| :|
Yeah, Word, let me just leave this whole chunk of dialogue without the closing quotation marks. That's the thing to do. How dare I have two punctuation marks in a row. It's not like that's how closing quotation marks fucking work.
I am going to light something on fire.
And you know, for young writers, this has got to be so detrimental just from the perspective of opening your document and seeing a million corrections that, frankly, don't need to be there. If you're a young writer you're likely not going to have the background knowledge to know what is and isn't a good suggestion, you're just going to see a document that makes it look like you made every mistake possible so clearly you must be a terrible, stupid writer and should just give up.
The UK is banning people under 16 from sver social media sites, including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. While I certainly agree that the modern internet causes a lot of health and development problems in young children, this ban is not about protection, it is about control.
The internet represents one of the few ways young people can escape the totalizing power their parents have over them. That these apps have been crafted to control their attention does not mean children should be banned from them, it means they should actually be regulated. If the internet is like "junk food" in their analogy, then the government needs to make the food safe to eat, not ban children from eating them.
Of course, British Prime Minister Kid Starver doesn't really care about protecting kids. His policy on Gaza is evidence enough for that. The real point of the law is to provide the state with the means necessary to control the internet and monitor citizens' activity on it. Children are the targets not because they are the only group which the internet is negatively affecting, but because they are the softest target.

any advice for someone who isn't really that interesting?
you weren’t put on this earth to entertain people. live your life as a boring bitch to the fullest.
I thought about just tagging this 'nuff said, but it's not.
I want to say something to all of the women under 50 on this site. Ready? You do not have to be over 50 to start taking up space.
Can I make that blink? Is that a thing Tumblr can do? Because, seriously. The sooner you believe you are allowed to take up space, the better life will be.
It's not even about online safety for kids, this ban. And the curfew for 17-18yr olds is so patronising
It's digital ID and data snatching by force, with a side of information blocking. Put your IDs on this stuff, or else you can't use it, oh and we're gonna be tracing you all the time now and flogging your data to whoever wants it
Bans just make it more difficult and dangerous to access the same stuff, and for everyone
Parents are the ones who need the responsibility put on them to make sure little timmy is watching 10hrs of tiktok a day, or to stop using phones/tablets/tv as a form of childcare, but even then the government would find a reason to do what they are
The worrying bit is how far it goes, as they've said they want to go further than any other country. So even if you give your ID, what after that?
March 30, 2026 - New Uber Eats delivery robots were sabotaged and vandalised in Sheffield, UK, with the vandals taking care to cover all of the many cameras on the robots with paint. [article]
New robotic food delivery equipment being used in a Sheffield suburb has been vandalised with spray paint. A vertical pole with an orange flag on one of the robots - designed to make it visible as it travels the streets of Meersbrook making deliveries for the food-ordering app Uber Eats - was bent to the ground. A charging station alongside a scout hut has also been defaced and traffic cones were placed behind the robots to prevent them from moving. Starship Technologies, which operates the equipment, said: "It's a shame to see a few people spoiling things for everyone else and damaging a new service for local people." Each of the bots is equipped with cameras and a suite of sensors. "The vehicles are fully autonomous" [AKA BEING OPERATED REMOTELY BY WORKERS IN LOW WAGE COUNTRIES] "and have been designed to navigate paths and busy roads safely, often using pedestrian crossings."

I noticed that an increasing number of posts from people and tags I follow were coming up completely blank or blocked. Like, I legit can't even look at some people's blogs anymore. Apparently this got snuck through with the latest Tumblr changes (in the UK, at least):
Once upon a time, I only needed a VPN to get my freak on or browse another country’s streaming services. Now I need it to properly interact with my favourite fandoms and friends on Tumblr. Now I need it if I want to look at or ask a mental or sexual health question on Reddit. And, while I haven't encountered it myself, we've all heard about people being unable to access Steam gaming communities or watch videos on Spotify if any of it contains content 'the system' deems inappropriate. All to ‘protect the children’. Meanwhile, sexbots are allowed to carry on spamming their tits and asses all over dozens of unrelated tags, and psychotic bigots continue to harass and threaten people and communities they dislike. That's okay, but fanart isn't, talk about endometriosis isn't. Got it. Fuck your censorship, you incompetent wankers. Sincerely.
