It sucks that people are treating the Reddit blackout as a joke or assuming it's impotent rage over a minor decision bc it's Reddit when like. No, a tech company shutting down access to their API by forcing third-party devs to pay completely unreasonable fees ($12,000 per 50 million API requests, which to the largest third party clients would be tens of millions of dollars) and in the process destroying both accessibility apps and moderation tools is Bad Actually

will never forget when i worked in a fast food joint. some customer wrote like â86 cherriesâ on their mobile order, as like a pretentious way of say no cherries, but the store was run by a bunch of high schoolers who are working their first job so they collectively went âwhy the fuck does this guy want 86 fucking cherriesâ and like piled them onto his milkshake
so when i made this i didnât expect ANY notes so i feel like an asshole now for not explaining. so incase you check the notes, 86 in restaurant terms means âunavailable or out of stockâ but has kinda morphed into âomitâ or âleave outâ. but none of us had worked in a restaurant before, also why would you not just say âno cherriesâ itâs the same amount of characters to type
Man ordering food: I work in the restaurant business ;)
Children working at restaurant: this guy must really like cherries. Got something in your eye there sir
based on.... certain news about certain star wars tv shows, i've been thinking how one of the Defining Characteristics of star wars media i enjoy is, well, Having an End Goal.
it's a line that runs through, and i'm not saying it's causation, but...
Lucas didn't have everything planned out in the OT, obviously, but he knew where they were going (ending the Empire). the PT had a specific end goal from word one (the Fall of the Republic). the clone wars: the end of the PT. rogue one: the beginning of ANH....
all of my favorite parts of star wars, right there.
whereas... the parts of star wars without an end goal are just kind of... Well. Look at the ST, which went so...the way it went that we haven't seen any follow-ups for it. look at tbobf, which had no goal, no direction (to the point that it got hijacked halfway through by another show).
there are exceptions to this rule, of course. the Solo movie, for example, arguably had an end goal, it just...fizzled anyway.
and OWK, i'd argue, didn't really have an end goal (at least, not an immediate one. ANH is still ten years distant), but it appealed to me for whatever reason (sad ewan mcgregor).
anyway, i just have been thinking about this while cleaning and now it is all typed up and it really holds true, for me, so....
I'd argue OWK absolutely had an end goal, but it was a character driven narrative, not a plot one. The end goal was for Obi-Wan Kenobi to truly be a Jedi again, to reclaim that identity, and he does. That's why it's satisfying even though the events of the plot themselves are still in-between major milestones of the Skywalker Saga. And there are arcs for the other characters that come to their conclusions, as well. Reva chooses mercy and fully lets go of her desire for vengeance against Anakin Skywalker. Leia is returned to her parents, but more importantly she chooses to fully commit to being an Organa HER way rather than fixating on her biological family. (This is also why I don't want a second season for this show, it DID come to its natural conclusion, all of the character arcs are DONE, you can't go anywhere else with Obi-Wan now that he's already had his arc.)
I think that Rebels hits well for similar reasons. There's absolutely ZERO clear plot end game here, but the end game isn't plot-related. It's character-related. We're watching Ezra Bridger become a true Jedi Knight. They were always leading towards that end goal for Ezra, and while the plot itself could keep stretching as they needed it to, there IS an actual goal for where Ezra as a character needed to go. I don't think they ALWAYS did perfectly with executing this goal, but at the very least they did have it in mind and it's in there enough as a guiding force to the story that it still is considered one of the best written Star Wars stories of all time.
This is also why Andor has hit so well with so many people, I think. Andor is a show that went into its story knowing exactly what story they wanted to tell. They've been saying FROM THE GET GO that this was a two season show, 24 episodes, and then they were done. They do have an obvious end goal in Rogue One, but they could've made this thing last forever if they wanted to. There's a five year time period, they could stretch that period of time out over so many seasons if they really wanted to. But they don't. They have a VERY specific story they're telling with Cassian here and they are building this entire show around making sure that THAT story is told as well as it can be.
I don't think you need a clear end game for your plot necessarily to make it a good story, but you DO need a clear end game for your CHARACTERS. You need to know where your characters are going to end up at the end of the story, even if the twists and turns that get them there change over time.
The OT wasn't just "they defeat the Empire" it was "Luke becomes a Jedi and saves his father." The PT isn't just "the Republic/Jedi fall and the Empire rises" it's "Anakin becomes a villain despite having once been a good person." The ST fails because those characters seem to change personalities and backgrounds and motivations in each film, so it's impossible to even describe what their character arcs even ARE. Lucas knew where he wanted his CHARACTERS to go, how they needed to land at the end of the story, and that's why those stories continue to work even though the plot mechanics in some of his films aren't perfectly executed. The good Star Wars stories, and arguably any good story, is good because they understand their characters, the journey that character is going on, and the message they are sending via that character's journey. If you don't understand your own character's story, there's no reason to tell it because the audience won't, either.

funniest thing about the âreddit migrationâ is that I havenât seen a single post shitting on anyone coming from Reddit. when twitter started bleeding users everyone was firing rent-lowering posts but with redditors skittering about weâve left the doors open and put out food bowls
Tags were too good to ignore.
After watching the Barbie trailer, my parents are arguing over whether, as a previous diplomat, Barbie should have diplomatic immunity in a foreign country (her home country being Barbieland) and thus whether her arrest by LAPD is unlawful.
Neither of my parents are lawyers or have studied international relations, they just got excited by the trailer
It's so weird watching the internet enter into this period of major anti-consumer changes which will almost certainly give birth to new alternative sites that will become the new juggernauts of the internet, or some new age of consumerist horror never before seem.
Between the Tumblr porn ban, reddit blackout, Twitter's implosion, TikTok threatening to be banned every other month, Netflix cutting off sharing, nothing seems stable anymore.
I'm just pack rat hoarding and copying down all the life-tips, artists names, resources, and shop names I love before it's parent site inevitably falls into the abyss
ruh roh, it gets worse
Yeah my name is Tim, short for OpTIMus Prime

answer: THEIR WEDDING.
I can't describe to you the emotion I would feel if I was hanging out with my friend Tim and he was like "hey we've been friends for a while now I want to show you something," and he hands me his driver's license, upon which I read "Optimus Prime Jones"
