There's just something so special about the way our entire crowd succeeded in not just chanting for The Fight, but in holding that chant for as insanely long as we did. I wasn't keeping track but we must have been chanting for at least a solid few minutes. That was a ridiculous display of synergy, and the perfect realization of the message of the albums' story.
There were a couple things that ran through my head during that chant. For one: that chant was the culmination of a bunch of prep work and word-spreading on behalf of the fans. There were rumors that the band didn't play The Fight at MAGFest because the fans didn't, well, fight for it. So at this show, we got the word out: when the old man swings, we fight. One person handed out zines with instructions at the end that the fight isn't over. Another made silicone wristbands telling us to "fight fight fight fight," and doled them out in handfuls so people could spread them out even further.
When the chant started, it started almost immediately. I was sucked right into the kayfabe of it, it really felt like we were all a group of rebels reacting to the death of one of our allies.
And THEN!!! When the band all went back stage, we held the chant. The lights went dark and we held it. The band was back there a long time, but the chant didn't stop. I heard it start to taper out at one point early on, but then there was a snapshot moment when we realized we could cover for each other. People around me would take breaks to rest their voice (mind you, this was at the tail end of three consecutive days of shows), trusting that the people around them would keep it up until they were ready to come back and pay it forward for others to rest. It was an electric feeling, seeing first hand how as a united group we were far stronger than any one person.
And isn't that the message of The Protomen anyway? No one Man can save Mankind. In the words of Protoman: "You will fall because you never tried to stand for yourselves." We proved him wrong. We did it.
