A common theme in science fiction is that if you're in space, don't trust a corporation. And Earth is in space

Hey so as the economy continues to get worse in the next few years, gambling companies are going to go extra hardcore predatory as people become more desperate. Yes, even more than they already are. You have to promise me right now you're not going to fall for it. No gambling, okay?
This is going to be especially bad with prediction markets and sports gambling, and it's already really fucking bad. But it also goes for loot boxes, blind box collectables, trading card games, and ESPECIALLY gacha games.
THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS
GAMBLING IS NEVER PROFITABLE

I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:
Fictional characters are objects.
They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.
I know this has good intentions, so I will just add the "how you treat them, even as objects of fiction, can speak about your own character, be careful out there"
Your addition is actually completely antithetical to my message. It is literally the opposite of what I am conveying.
Stop telling people to encourage the cop inside their head.
How you treat fictional characters, given they are entirely objects of fiction, does NOT necessarily speak to your own character, and you do not need to be "careful".
It is not dangerous to imagine dark things happening to fictional characters. It does not mean you are secretly a bad person. It does not mean you unconsciously want to hurt people in real life. It is not a "slippery slope" to doing bad things to people in real life. You cannot damage your brain or turn yourself into a bad person by consuming "dark" fanfic.
I can write tentacle noncon of my favorite character all day long and be a fierce anti-sexual assault advocate in real life because what I do in my head is not the same thing as what I do in real life.

In case y'all need pictures sorry it aint in crayon šļø-
I just want to add, while I am in agreement, it's not untrue to say that how you treat or talk about a character can be a signifier of character, like I think people use this liberally and are perhaps too glib about it overall, but for example, maybe the most common use of this is talking about adults who might like characters who are not, or the enjoyment of a character who is not exactly morally upright being a signifier of your own morals. This is... false. Generally. There are outliers, of course, like Patrick Bateman sycophants. But I'm not talking about that. It's more like... concepts and ideas are real, and there are people out there who will see what you think.
I'm talking about when people malign a disabled character for their disability when this is antithetical to the point. I feel like when people say this, they tend to think of the characters as real, but they're not. The people around you, though?ā they are real. This argument should always mean being conscious of the space you hold, honestly.
Off the top of my head, I've seen characters called "ugly" and "worthless" post disabling event(s), or compared to an old, pitable dog that's kept around because people are sad and don't want to put it down. There's this narrative that says "nothing matters because it's fake", and conversely the one that says "everything matters because it's real", and it's just like. I think it depends. I think it varies based on what you're talking about and how you are talking about it, and that "nothing matters" is as conservative of a stance as "everything does". Unfortunately, though, the people who are saying "everything matters", especially publicly, often only mean it in the silliest of ways. Fiction and reality are not 1:1.
Fiction is built from reality, though, and we can sometimes reinforce things by treating them so carelessly. A character would not be evil because of their psychopathy, for instance, but could be considered as such for their actions and beliefs, especially if those beliefs are abusive. How you talk about these things does matter, but again, these statements are used to purity spiral, not to talk about our relationships with mental health, misogyny and other social structures. They're incredibly simplified to mean that liking something "bad" makes you a "bad person" by a bunch of incurious jerks.
Which sucks, really, because it's like. Well there is a conversation to be had here, but it's never the conversation anyone is having!
Like it isn't a moral discussion! It's "how do we feed into the structures around us by how we frame our media", and "how does this medias framing feed into the structures around us?", etc., like when people look past a narrative and make jokes about a character being "evil" when that character has a deeply stigmatized disorder, or how this visibly disabled guy is ugly and worthless and no one cares about him now because he isn't attractive when the media wants you to dissect these attitudes yourself (!), like at the very least this is an incredibly lame, boring way for you to engage with complex themes.
Cool story but
Thatās not what my post is about.
My post is about how you canāt hurt a fictional character because they arenāt a real person.
And again, how you treat fictional characters does NOT automatically mean thatās how you feel about people irl. Noncon authors arenāt all rapists. Could the things you write reveal unconscious biases you have? Yes. But thatās not a 100% thing.
But thatās not what my post is about. Itās about how authors arenāt literally murderers if they write about a character being murdered.
Speaking as someone who's been a Stephen King fan for 20 years:
Not only have I managed to avoid killing people, mutilating dead bodies, committing rape, engaging in a black mass, summoning demons, or imprisoning people to force them to do things for me, I can--after twenty years! How warped and twisted I must be, according to the worldview of the "fiction must be treated like real life" folks!--I can still recognize that when characters in his stories do these things, they are wrong.
And I'm also aware of how many of his stories contain ambiguous or no-win situations, and I can even parse them! Somehow I've retained the ability to say "you know, murder is wrong, but I understand why it was literally the only option left to this woman" and similar sentiments.
It's important to be able to do that, to recognize fact from fiction and situations with shades of gray. And that means someone has to write those things, or you cannot learn.
idk why but i feel like being a punk is for he/hims and doing ballet is for she/hers
