figured Iād post this here <3
First full scene from S5 we've seen, what did you think?
(cinematography, writing, directing, acting, CGI, etc.)
First of all, Will is brave as fuck. Braver than he thinks. And more capable than others in the show and the audience have given him credit for in the past.
The Duffers did exactly what I predicted them to do in terms of character work, which is counteract the narrative of Will's helplessness or weakness. He didn't successfully evade the Demogorgon, but he did put up quite the fight and didn't give up. He not only shot the monster but climbed a tree then jumped to the next one when it chased him up to the treetop. His tenacity is a superpower in its own right.
Second, isn't Will so smart for climbing the tree? He knew that he couldn't outrun or hide from the creature in those skeletal-looking woods. But, he suspected that he could possibly escape it by getting off the ground. He has great survival instincts in a nearly impossible situation.
Third, the library scene is written and directed in such a disturbing manner. The graphic depiction of--what can only be described as--oral rape, with Vecna pumping these slugs (baby Demogorgons) into Will's stomach, makes one's stomach turn. The imagery and noises, coupled with the Demogorgon slinging and yanking him around, stressed the continuous violence of Will's violation.
The violence enacted against Will is also paired with a measure of intimacy: Vecna stroking Will's cheek with his humanoid hand. While Vecna does that with his victims (prey) in season four, he uses his "claw," which is a gesture of power. In this case, this seems more like a gesture of appreciation or even comfort. It's likely a mix of both.
Will is an invaluable asset to Vecna's "beautiful" cause. Without his "builder," Vecna wouldn't be able to fulfill his plans. On a personal level, Vecna understands the nature of the horror and violence Will is experiencing. However, he likely believes it is a necessary sacrifice that'll benefit not just Will but everyone in the end. Like Brenner forsook humanity for ambition, Henry himself makes the same tradeoff with Will, beginning the cycle abuse again but, this time, as the perpetrator.
Similar to Brenner and Henry (Vecna)'s dynamic in The First Shadow, there's likely a paternalistic component to Vecna's investment in Will. Will is someone he can mold as he sees fit, like he tried to do with El before and like he's trying to do with the world now. However, unlike with El, Vecna revokes Will's ability to choose to partake in his plans. Will is now at the center of a plan which threatens to destroy all that he believes and loves, setting him up for an identity crisis.
This opening scene is a brilliantly brutal demonstration of how Will's struggle with autonomy is at the forefront of the season. And it also hints at how Will can overcome it: will power.
OH MY GOD. no shut up because every bit of willās happiness has been destroyed, everything that got him out of the possession? will no longer deems it true
will thinks heās not worth remembering and there isnāt a thing to get him out of the possession NOW

just remembered mikeās sweater has a pattern like the demogorgon maw and just. mike thinking his love for will is monstrous. a love so fierce and all consuming itās like staring down the mouth of a beast and itās too late when you realize youāve already been swallowed whole.
Will, Vecna, and the Death and the Maiden Motif
Theorizing about the relationship and subtext between Will, his queer identity, and Vecna in S5 (CW: discussions of CSA, homophobia, and death)
Iāve made a post that S5 Will Byers is a gothic heroine, and today I wanted to expand on my thoughts.
The Death and the Maiden
The āDeath and the Maidenā is an age-old motif in gothic art and literature. It is a dynamic between a young and innocent woman and the (typically male) incarnation of Death. The trope is associated with themes of mortality, agency, and loss of innocence. I think Will and Vecnaās dynamic is a play on this motif.
Mike Wheeler as the Gothic Husband
Theorizing Mikeās S5 arc through the gothic leading man
This is the third post in my unintentional trilogy of analyzing the gothic meta of S5. Iāve spoken before on how Will and Vecna embody the Death and the Maiden motif, and I theorized on how I think that dynamic will manifest in S5. I want to theorize on how Mike fits into this by following the role of the gothic husband.
I love this! I can't speak with authority on the Gothic Husband as an archetype, but I will say that something I noticed about Thomas in Nosferatu is that he's very duty-bound to his role as a Victorian gentleman.
He loves his wife, but he also contributes to her sexual repression (and thus her connection to the monster) by being wrapped up in work and neglecting her needs: Thomas leaves Ellen pining for him at home while he embarks on a lengthy business trip; Orlock manipulates Thomas into making a business deal that brings him closer to Ellen; Orlock gleefully taunts Ellen that her husband sold her out to him.
I think there's a loose parallel here too in how duty-bound Mike is to the expectation of 80s masculinity: he loves Will and does his best to support him through the horrors, but his performative heterosexuality also contributes to Will's sexual repression and thus his connection to the monster.
"it's a show about will" "we are going to do such beautiful things together, will.... such... beautiful things." "i started with will byers in the middle." "the trailer reaffirms that will is crucial to the conclusion of this story that began nine years ago" "will really takes center stage again in season 5" "the story really began with will and his disappearance, it felt, in order to go full circle, it needed to really end with him in so many ways." "in the last couple seasons, we hadn't really centered much of the show on will. so there was so much to explore with him from a character perspective and plot perspective." "a really rich territory to explore [will and vecna's] connection and relationship." "we definitely explore more about henry because so much of the show revolves around vecna's relationship with will" "'what is the upside down, truly?' and 'why was will taken?'" "will's going to be a big part and focus, is really all i can say of season 5... we're starting to see his coming of age, really." "this emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together." "this season takes will to the next level and really rounds out his arc beautifully" "it means so much that [the duffers] believe i know this character well enough to understand what's best for him and what moments need to be added. and the fact that they put that on the page and made it happen is incredible." "i really want will to have a happy ending and i think he will." "you'll be like "yes! something finally goes right for him!"" "i think they did a great job with willās character this season, and beautifully addressed everything they needed to. the way they closed the show is just perfect ā the story started with will, and itāll end with will."
I watched Nosferatu (2024) in Feb and immediately knew I'd have to recreate this scene with Will and Vecna at some point. š§
(The final panel is super rushed and I'm not happy with how it turned out, but overall I'm pleased I got this done in time for Halloween for once!)

boyfriends judging (again) š¤

Guys this is definitely epilogue Will
Noah if you simply had this very late 80ās t-shirt in your closet, and are in a committed relationship⦠then congratulations. But what a way to direct the audience by putting that in the TEASER
If you didnāt pick up on my heavy sarcasm- im literally 100% sure this is epilogue Will. And he got his boy š
Edit- @chloe-coma mentioned that thereās also a long history of gay men in relationships wearing these necklaces. We fucking won guys
(SPOILER tagging even though everyone's already talking about this but I think this is beyond a "clue" and almost confirms certain events)
Okay, I can't find the Tumblr post (here it is!)... it dates this shirt to the 90s (or maybe it's the late 1980s?). This definitely is not a modern look and it is quite STRONG evidence that:
Will becomes gay, out and proud! Because that shirt and necklace are gay. GAY! (Yay!)
Will survives until the epilogue. You just don't get THIS flamboyant in small-town Indiana without growing into it first.
I'm surprised this got past the crew's spoiler censors, to be honest! If Will doesn't survive into the epilogue, then this was some diabolical misdirection.
Now on to LOCKGATE:
I'm not finding much independent confirmation of this, but yes it could indicate he's in a committed relationship!! Of course Byler haters and doubters will say he's in a relationship with Random Epilogue Boy (R.E.B.). But would this show randomly indicate Will has a COMMITMENT for an R.E.B.? I don't think so! No, it's probably for a relationship that the show has developed, say maybe with a certain Michael?
Also, if anyone's curious, a lock around the neck is also associated with the BDSM community, signaling someone who is a "submissive." Will you kinky thang! Though it's usually accompanied by a thick chain. (Though this APPEARS to be a very thin chain...)
Symbols and alternate interpretations and all that! =D
My Byler-Meter has been hovering at 80% for about a year, but now it has jumped up to 85%. =D

Sorry I donāt remember if you like that stuff or not but could you maybe write something about age gap Byler with older Will? š if you donāt like him being a top at all, it could be sexy cougar power bottom Will 𤤠also trans Mike + this Will⦠sorry and thank you
Any time the older Will x younger Mike concept gets brought up I always imagine Mike being infatuated with him, lusting after him with all that teenage hornyness over the prospect of getting with older guy.. and one as pretty as Will too š„“ but I can totally have fun playing around with it the other way!!
also just fyi for future anons/asks - I dabble pretty much everywhere regarding different dynamics and more āproship -y topicsā lmao send me anything anytime <3
Iām just imagining Mike being sooo overwhelmed by all of this special treatment and preening under the attention of Will and being a little naive to the nature of Willās interest in him hehe⦠and t!Mike makes it a fun one to play with too.
Will grooming him under the pretence of being a supportive, doting and caring person for Mike. Touches that linger, telling him heās so handsome and encouraging him to strip off clothes so Will can see the rest of him. Thumbing the buds of his little pink nipples.
A younger trans Mike would probably be pre-T but that doesnāt stop Will from indulging in little fantasies for him.. shoving his face against Mikeās sweaty neck and armpits and telling him how manly he smells really turns him on⦠loves going down on him and getting to spread Mikeās legs open and very exaggeratedly and sloppily suck at his clit, play pretend that Mikeās already developed the swell of bottom growth. Mike fingers Will thoroughly in return - ādo it just how youād prep me if you had the parts to fuck me, right?ā - thereās a lot of dirty talk there. A lottt of shared fantasies. Mike wants to be fucked by Will too but I think itās hot if Will makes him wait for it. Plausible deniability, right? As long as weāre not going all the way it doesnāt count. Heās not doing anything wrong ;)
I didn't start shipping Byler because I picked up on a few moments of chemistry and decided they'd make a cute couple -- I started off by absolutely refusing to entertain said moments as reciprocally queer until I ran into the ridiculous homophobia on the ST subreddit and decided to review Mike's character arc out of sheer gay spite.
Let me clarify: Spite isn't what made me change my mind about Mike. Spite just made me read a few Byler analyses and rewatch the show with an open mind because I didn't want to be like those pricks who would insult and censor queer fans for... [checks notes]... thinking something gay might happen in a TV show with gay people in it. I truly wasn't expecting a queer interpretation to fit Mike's arc anywhere near as well as the default interpretation -- but by the time I'd finished my rewatch, I was reeling from how much better it fit.
Cause that's the thing: Mike's queerness is pretty obvious once you look for it. The difficulty is in giving yourself permission to look.

Will Byers Isnāt Stuck In Childhood.
Will Byersā pain is often reduced to a simple, dismissive idea: that he just doesnāt want to grow up. In a group of friends discovering girls, identity, and independence, Will is seen as the one clinging to childhood, desperately trying to bring everyone back to the basement for one more D&D campaign. But this reading does a deep disservice to the emotional complexity of his character. Will isnāt stuck in childhood, heās suffering because of the loss of it. Heās been through more than anyone else, and also the people he loves are changing in ways that leave him increasingly isolated.
When we first meet Will, heās sweet, creative, and a little shy. By the end of Season 1, heās a trauma survivor. He was kidnapped by a creature from another dimension, held in a terrifying parallel world, and then brought back only to experience further psychological torment in Season 2. This isnāt just supernatural horror... itās metaphorical for real-world trauma. Unlike the others, Willās development isnāt linear because heās healing from something that no one else fully understands. When his friends supposedly move on, atleast in his eyes, it's not that heās unwilling to grow - itās that theyāre emotionally skipping ahead while he's still grappling with what happened. Just because he doesn't bring his trauma up often, while he's with his friends, doesn't mean he's over it. And he still feels connected to Vecna, but even if that weren't the case, it would still take him a considerable amount of time to get over his traumatic experience. Anyone in his place would experience the same fate. But Will... Will would never do something or bring up something that'd, according to him, burden his friends. It's tragic, really, also misunderstood by Will that he could ever āburdenā his friends.
All he really craves is ānormalcyā.
His so-called "childishness" is not about games or fantasy. Itās about clinging to emotional safety. Dungeons & Dragons isnāt just a hobby for Will, itās a language of connection, a symbol of when things made sense. When he tries to organize a game and his friends brush it off, itās not about dice or dragons. Itās about rejection. Itās about thinking that the people who once formed the core of his world no longer see him in the same light... or perhaps no longer see him at all.
And then thereās what goes unsaid. In Season 3, Mike snaps at Will: āItās not my fault you donāt like girls.ā It lands like a blade, cutting straight into something Will hasnāt even found the words for yet. The show slowly, subtly unfolds his struggle with identity... his queerness, his confusion, his fear of being different in a town and society that increasingly privileges heteronormative teenage experiences. Will isnāt immature. Heās just a bit insecure, and rightly so. Heās trying to understand himself in an environment that doesn't make space for him.
The tragedy of Will Byers isnāt that he wants to stay a child. Itās just that no one really sees how fast he was forced to grow up. He was pulled into darkness, literally and emotionally, and when he came back, the world around him had already moved on. His friends are busy experiencing love and becoming teenagers. Will is busy trying to stay afloat. His suffering isnāt regression. Itās realism. Also, he feels like he's lost the innocence he craves. The innocence of playing DnD with his friends, without a care in the world. Tragedy is that, it's not even his fault.
Will isnāt behind. Heās just on a different path. One defined by trauma, by longing, by unspoken truths, and by the kind of quiet resilience that often goes unnoticed in louder stories. Heās not stuck in childhood. Heās just trying to survive it.
He's such a complex character yet is so often overlooked by the audience, that it's genuinely quite tragic.
"Love, Mike."
