Happy PRIDE to all my dearest LGBTQIA+ friends. Wishing a joyful Pride Month to everyone, whether you identify somewhere on the sexuality spectrum or prefer not to define your sexuality or gender identity. Happiest Pride to all those who are unable to celebrate openly and safely. You are loved and you are seen. I hope this month will only be filled with joy, happiness, love and celebration. I’m sooo tired of straight people thinking the most inspiring thing that can happen to queer characters on tv is to come out and be accepted

And then there's the fact that there's a nonbinary button... Which is something I genuinely did not think possible yet. I don't think people are talking about how big this is - the is probably one of the most MAJOR and VISIBLE media out there to ever include nonbinary representation, and this is NINTENDO we're talking about. The company that will shy away from Anything that might give them intense backlash. Displaying a third option labeled "nonbinary" directly smack in the character creator of their new hit game that people have been waiting for for over a decade. It's not only visible, it's UNAVOIDABLE. If you want to play Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream you HAVE to be reminded that we exist every time you open the character creator just like women and men. I mean, how many people will buy the game and not know what the word even means, and become more familiar with nonbinary genders because of this? Acknowledgement in the general public consciousness like this is going to kickstart something huge.

and you know what? if you had that experience, good for you. i'm not here to tell you that you can't feel happy about queer representation or see yourself in a particular character.

if you relate to Jax as a trans person, that's great. if you saw Catra and Adora, and felt seen as a lesbian or otherwise queer person, that's wonderful.

but that doesn't mean said shows or characters are perfect and can never be criticized. it is an unfortunate truth that we still don't have enough queer representation, so even crumbs of it feels like a big deal to people who have never seen their identities represented in media.

Steven Universe was the first queer show i watched and such, it has a special place in my heart. it taught me a lot of valuable lessons, and helped me feel more secure in my gender and sexuality.

but that doesn't mean i'm blind to its flaws. there were a lot of things it could have done better and i'm still mad at the way it ruined a lot of character's arcs. there's a reason why i haven't rewatched it ever since the first time, and it's because i know some of the writing decisions are gonna make me angry and upset.

So yeah. Alligator moat.
