i headcanon david as the kind of guy who vastly prefers playing sports over watching sports. like yes he plays casually occasionally in a beer league and when shane was very little helped coach until they realized shane should be in more competitive leagues. but he really only watches shane's games and has no idea about any of the drama. like he listens to yuna but doesnt retain much because she really just likes ranting to him. amd when yuna and shane get started on hockey together? hes mostly checked out doing all the other things that take focus (driving, ordering at restaurants, cooking, getting luggage, herding them to their destination, etc.) so they can yap without interruption. all this to say when he meets ilya he truly doesnt really remember the whole rivalry until he yuna's reaction. and then because he's a hockey player he gets to chirp just a little for fun ("there were no nice men in montreal?") which i would argue ilya appreciates bc he loves a good chirp. david has very little preconceived notions of ilya other than Pretty Good Hockey Player and therefore accepts him immediately after seeing how he cares for shane
