in modern day it's very easy to look at batman and be like "WHAT was this guy doing. Insane choice. You do NOT have to fight crime this way" but then you learn literally anything about the US in 1900-1939 and you're like "oh a batman terrifying people would have actually for real improved the situation"
"what did batman do to improve Gotham in ANY WAY that Bruce Wayne couldn't"
Batman is breaking into your landlord's apartment and and saying they would be seeing Batman EVERY NIGHT until they got running water in the apartment building, there are literal plague rats running around
Batman is solving crimes the police ignore due to sexism and racism, finding the perpetrators, and dangling them off a roof, promising if they ever do that again, he will also dangle them off a roof again
Batman is breaking into mafioso bedrooms, tying them up, gluing 500 individual feathers onto them, then taking pictures and sending them to every big newspaper chain in the country to remind people that the ones they're afraid of are still only men
Then he finds police officers on the take and glues feathers to all their uniforms so they can't walk around without everyone knowing they are also associated with the chicken mafia, what a loser.
He is seeing violent crime happen on the streets and swooping in to get in the way as it is happening. Extortion, assault, murders-- get good, assholes, your crime is witnessed and you have been punched in the face, AND he's going to tip off the police commissioner who last year started listening. He is blowing up a mobster weapons depot so they have fewer guns on the street.
Bruce Wayne can help when the system is working. And Batman gets to work when the system does not.

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
@acavatica #‘it’s better on the isms because it doesn’t discuss them’ might be the whole thing here#‘it doesn’t make me uncomfortable’ isn’t necessarily better than ‘dated thing had an awkward discussion but they tried’
Yes, yes, YES! Starting a new post, because this sums up so many of my frustrations with fan crit. Like, Animorphs clumsily attempts to tackle AIDS and slavery reparations and environmentalism and disability justice, and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't. But at least it tries. AniTV strips all of that out in favor of a far blander "yeerks bad, humans good, we ignore race here" story.
There's this fallacy, where it's easier to criticize a failed attempt than it is a total lack of trying. In the Heights (2021) got smacked up, down, and sideways by critics and fans for its failure to include more dark-skinned characters; meanwhile A Quiet Place II (2021), Venom II (2021), Free Guy (2021), and Black Widow (2021) get no such critiques because they each include Exactly One Black Actor. Scholomance gets review-bombed for "fake" "forced" "diversity" (X) for featuring kids from all over the world, while Mortal Instruments gets a total lack of criticism for its cast having Exactly One Asian Guy (who is half-white).
I vividly recall a media professor ca. 2013 mansplaining to me that, actually, Orange is the New Black is sexist because it shows male characters having power over female ones, and there's no onscreen sex between the Black lesbians. Somehow he didn't feel the need to say this about Breaking Bad, Supernatural, Peaky Blinders, or any other series that went entire YEARS without passing the Bechdel test. No wonder TV shows have again embraced colorblind racism.
It's like when a series tries to tackle the big issues, there's enough there there for critics to get their teeth into; better to blandly replicate the status quo. And studios notice: Better to avoid all controversy by having the Animorphs inhabit a world where no one ever notices Jake and Cassie being an interracial couple, where Marco lives in a McMansion and Tobias's home life is never mentioned at all, where the closest we ever get to discussion of gender is Marco saying Rachel "throws like a girl" only to get belted with a baseball. That way no one can ever find enough examples of sexism to edit into a clever 60-second video montage of "12 most sexist moments of AniTV you've definitely forgotten!"
I am still struggling. I’m a queer trans Latine man who was institutionalized by my family for two years. I have no income due to nonsense with the social security administration but I still need food.

I've been having a lot of thoughts about the characterization of Jason in Arkham Knight for the past few days (i played 20 hours of the game in the span of 3 days and only have like. A few riddles left until 100%, my brain is melting), and it's genuinely so amazing to me, how AK Jason is the exact opposite of comic Jason.
Say all you want about how they might be similair characters, they are not. In my opinion when AK was released, Jason's personality (and story!) from that universe blended into comic Jason's personality so intensely to the point that you cannot ask a recent fan to differentiate them. Every little aspect of both characters is the opposite, from their birth in the story to their, what? Success?—definitely not, but maybe their single similarity: their Failure.
-> Comic Jason is brought to the world by Sheila, an awful excuse of a mother, to then be raised by Catherine and Willis—say what you will, those two were the best parents Jason could've had in their living situation. Willis might've been a criminal, but it's pointed out many times that he did it only for his small family. He loved them both, no matter what kind of man he was. Catherine had her flaws, she struggled with addiction and regrettably pulled Jason into dealing with the consequences. But he remembers her well.
-> One of the first things we see Willis and Catherine do in AK: Genesis is try to sell newborn Jason to Maroni. Sheila doesn't exist here. Catherine and Willis have both turned into awful people due to their living positions. Jason himself narrates, Having kids won't save a marriage.
-> When Jason is caught trying to steal the Batmobile's tires, fully aware of who he was stealing from, he could say he brought it upon himself. He's around eight years old.
-> When Batman literally drops down unconscious next to Jason in the alley, Jason is immediately and, not of his own want, doomed into his mess with the Joker. He's fifteen.
-> Jason's caught by the Joker while trying to help his mother.
-> Jason's caught by the Joker while trying to help Bruce.
-> Jason's whole tragedy revolves around his death. He's somewhere from 12 to 15. A long time after it, both Dick and Alfred need to convince Bruce into letting Tim, a couple years younger than Jason, become the new Robin.
-> Jason is deliberately left alive for over a year to be psychologically and physically tortured by Joker and the other Rogues. He's 17 when it starts. Only six months into being missing (by Bruce's unstable mind, assumed dead), Bruce of his own accord lets Tim, a couple years older than Jason, become the new Robin.
-> Jason, braindead after coming back to life, is picked up off the streets and (dare I say) groomed into being Talia's perfect revenge on Bruce, he's 15-17.
-> Jason, having escaped the god forsaken torture room in Arkham, stumbles upon Deathstroke and sets fate in his favor by persuading Slade into helping him plan Bruce's murder.
-> The Joker is alive. Nothing in Gotham has changed.
-> The Joker is dead. Nothing in Gotham has changed.
-> Jason's relationship with Talia is complicated. But, ultimately, he sets a path for himself back in Gotham, deciding to control crime instead of fighting it—he goes through a lot of mental turbulence when he comes back. He thinks of killing Bruce at first, only later deciding that he wants to make a point by making him kill Joker.
-> Jason has one objective he follows straight up: murder Bruce. If his own murderer wasn't there to be killed, he would go for the bystander.
-> Bruce slices Jason's neck with a batarang when he's about to kill the Joker.
-> Jason shoots Scarecrow when he's about to kill Bruce.
Such seemingly small changes in an origin can change the character so deeply at the root of their actions, even if the actions themselves seem similair. A lot of thought went into the action-reaction process in both versions of Jason, which is something I like to point out whenever the fandom decides to make him painfully shallow again.
i love it and hate it when a character in a story is so obviously created to be cool and awesome and then i do think they're cool and awesome. like fuck, yeah, ok, they're fucking epic. swag as hell. you got me you coolbaited me ok? i'm coolbaited.
clark and bruce as FBI agents for @etexcrucior's excellent fic burn the treeline down, because I've reread it so many times at this point and the idea of them as tired agents solving cold cases around the US just wouldn't let me go

its been a delight seeing reactions to the nika reveal and the drums of liberation, especially due to the iconic songs in the one piece ost that have always been around. and also because luffy, from day one, has delivered liberation like its second nature.
koby. boom liberated. zoro. boom liberated. we continue on and see luffy free the people he encounters from physical, emotional, and structural oppression. its why ennies lobby is so iconic. its why nami is a ride or die. over and over again, hidden behind a smile and a self-declared selfish nature, people find freedom from luffy's interference. (skypeia skippers, its on sight. ydk luffy like we do)
and thats why after the mass liberation event on thriller bark, after camie and hachi and punching a celestial dragon, impel down and marineford hits so extremely hard.
but for all that saving ace was a failure, it was not a failure of liberation. the cuffs were off. the boy who thought he was cursed saw the hundreds of lives he touched, saw the love he had unknowingly collected. and thats also why we get the ASL backstory during this arc. because luffy liberated ace long before they became pirates. when they became brothers.
and then it continues. shirahoshi. boom liberated. the kids at punk hazard. boom liberated. law. boom liberated.
again and again. because from day one we knew luffy's dream to be king of the pirates. his reason? not only a promise, but his desire to be the freest person of all. and as much as people joke about it -and ignoring for a moment the political implications of roger's title and marine propa - i think luffy's ascendancy to king of the pirates is increased with each arc. it IS the journey. it is the adventure. the one piece is real, and so are the friends we made along the way :)
no one can accuse me of AI because I’m hopelessly addicted to posting WIPs and then taking five weeks to actually share the finished product because I’m not only an attention seeker but also a procrastinator
“Batman wishes I was dead.” Jason no, baby, he just wants you to stop cutting random dude’s heads off in the middle of the night in Gotham. And not even because he disagrees with you, but because Batman is the one Jim Gordon calls to come deal with the mysterious cut-off heads at 5:00 am. That man just got off patrol and now he’s gotta go look at some bloodstained duffel bag in the Narrows with Jim Gordon who’s hitting his emotional support vape like it’s an oxygen mask. Bruce can’t stand the smell of cotton candy. Do you see where I’m going with this, Jason?
#things James Gordon would say for 500 (via @sillybirdhole)
no but really, how long do you think Jason runs around being Red Hood before Jim Gordon corners him one night, sucks on his vape hard enough to make Jason genuinely worried for his lung health, and says "you know...your old man's gettin' real tired" and Jason instantly does the whole "oh so he's tired of pretending to care about me when--" and Jim cuts him off, waving. hits his vape again for an alarming amount of time, exhales pure 100% cotton candy into the night, and says "I mean tired. like he isn't sleeping." and Jason shrugs all "well what do you want me to do about that?" and Jim Gordon turns around, looks him directly in the eyes of his helmet, raises his vape up and says "stop fucking killing people and cutting their heads off in the middle of the night" like it's obvious. which, it kinda is. the man is TIRED. and Jim Gordon is tired of Batman being tired around him. it's making them both exhausted. like oh boy, another duffel bag of cut-off heads! what a mystery! and it's fuckin' gross. it's gross and it's not even an actual complex crime for them to solve and yet. yet. they are getting up out of bed -- scratch that, they're not even going to bed before this -- to come deal with this bullshit. middle of the night, random stinking warehouse. every. single. goddamned. time. so when Jim Gordon says Batman cares about you, he means he is the only one other than me who's patient enough to deal with your dumbass cut-off heads at three in the morning. STOP. fucking. cutting. off. HEADS.
