"prison abolition" is a hilarious position, because proponents respond to obvious, vital questions like "how will you manage serial murderers and rapists?" with "d-don't worry about it, things will be different, and because they'll be different, they'll be BETTER!"
but there's a better hypothetical: ask what they would want to happen if they were a victim of a hate crime. should the perpetrator be merely rehabilitated? locked away for an arbitrary amount of time? executed on the spot?
obviously, when people are unwilling or unable to consider even first-order consequences of a policy, expecting them to comprehend a hypothetical is a tall order. but it at least makes them look even dumber ;)
Prison abolition is a long term goal. It's not a single law being proposed that would free all prisoners once it's signed.
Why are you more critical of a hypothetical long term solution than you are of what's currently happening?
"Create a financial incentive to imprison as many people as possible in order to use them as a source of slave labor for corporate profit" is a much more hilarious position. "Create a class of people who can legally decide on the spot who lives and who dies, and who you're not allowed to defend yourself against" is a much more hilarious position. And those are currently happening and being widely supported.
I would rather a rapist be rehabilitated and never ever want to commit that crime again and feel guilt for it than be locked up in a place that just generally sucks ass for a few years and then probably set free early. Prison abolition is a long term goal because the current one allows voter suppression on a massive scale, rape that rarely gets punished at all, slave labor etc.
The number of human rights violations in any American prison is untold and unregulated. The first step is to deprivatize prisons.
Incredible, a false dichotomy and a false premise in one neat package!
"I would rather a rapist be rehabilitated and never ever want to commit that crime again and feel guilt for it" And if a rapist is "rehabilitated", but they come out not feeling guilt for it, and in fact, may be eager to commit rape again? Rehabilitation is not a magic bullet, nor is it necessarily a replacement for incarceration. I'm not opposed to it, but you do need to consider what might happen if everybody doesn't "just" act as expected.
"than be locked up in a place that just generally sucks ass for a few years" The separation and unpleasant conditions are intended as a punishment for violent and/or antisocial behavior. It's not a strict requirement, though, especially if rehabilitation is the goal.
"and then probably set free early." That's a failure of the courts, not incarceration itself as a concept. And it's usually activist judges at fault.
"Prison abolition is a long term goal because the current one allows voter suppression on a massive scale" Committing particularly heinous acts constitutes a violation of the social contract. But I think it makes sense to restore a felon's right to vote, after the completion of parole.
"rape that rarely gets punished at all" That's a problem, to be sure. More attention should be put onto preventing crimes between convicts. And avoiding stupid mistakes, like putting a 6' convicted rapist into a woman's prison. That's not, like, hyperbole or an oddly specific example, that actually happened in California and resulted in at least two women being raped.
I mean, you can take my extreme simplification on my views in the worst light possible if you really want to. It doesn't make me wrong.
so this knight came to my wizard's tower one day and asked me to cast a spell that would allow him to take his beloved princess' hand in marriage. pretty typical this kind of wish, and i had just the spell. a combo of "turn person into a royal" and "transform appearance to match romantic ideal", easy. he paid handsomely for it too, so how can i says no?
turns out his princess is a lesbian and nobody knew, so when i cast the spell it made him into a beautiful princess. she asked for a refund right away and begged me (cryin', held me at swordpoint) to turn her back, but i says to her, i says, "The die has already been cast, and your fate is now sealed!" which is my way of sayin' "no refunds".
turns out, bein' a princess weren't so bad for her and she was able to take her sweet and beloved princess' hand in marriage. seems like everything worked out.
but then, surprise of my life, they both show up to my tower and my spell was undone. some dark sorcerer shithead (some kinda sketchy royal adviser who wanted to usurp the throne, a million like 'im) had removed my enchantments and turned our princess back into a knight. but she didn't want to be a man no more and asked me to redo the spell. gladly i changed her back in exchange for fuckin' up this sorcerer shmuck, (could be a threat to my business, you see) gave 'er an enchanted sword an everything. to my shock, the other princess takes the sword and vows to get this guy for me.
now i got all this guy's magic shit and good graces for life with the queens of the land, plus the best advertisement money can't buy. "yes, i am in fact That wizard from the story of the princess knight!" classic.
anyway, all that to say, no i ain't changin' yous back. you'll be mommy's pretty little maid and you'll like it.
did not know taking summer classes meant they pull you out back and shoot you with a gun
but if itβs for the sake of learning, i suppose
They really do try to fit an entire semester in like 9 weeks.

then again I truly am unsure if anyone has ever actually felt happy while inside a grocery store so who knows
Incorrect! I used to work at target and one time a little bird landed on my cart and we became friends :)
the thing I love most about how tumblr users use tags is that itβs like what if a social media website had a footnotes system
"this looks like a long document. click now for an AI summary!" and its three paragraphs and you have acquired basic literacy skills
My biggest pet peeve with AI summaries is when the summary is longer than the damn email. I Can Read.
Bear religion probably fucking rocks. You're a fucking bear, you're the deadliest thing on earth, once a year an endless supply of salmon just flings itself up the river to gorge on and then you nap for 3 months.
The most delicious food in the world is protected by tiny demons who can defend it from everyone except you. Your natural armor is thick enough that you can just eat the damn hive while they buzz around you. God's chosen animals right there
Regular bears tell stories of angel bears sent by the Bear God, pure white and twice as strong as any normal bear could be, who rule the summit of the Earth and kill all who stand in their path.
And they are right, those bears exist and totally do that. Humans just have fake angels as a cope.
love the idea of bears being the chosen species actually. having a near death experience and glimpsing heaven and realising it's just full of bears, no humans at all, humans not ensouled actually, humans an accidental byproduct of God's plan for bears

can I get a job as an editor but the only thing I do is correct when someone uses the word "prone" when they mean "supine"
thank you wikipedia for this really good image
a helpful mnemonic for everyone
too good for tags
This mnemonic has a permanent place in my life.
Every time in yoga class when my instructor would say "now get into a prone position" I would think "ah yes on your pronis"

yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.

i don't even gaf about shipping discourse because i'm a big boy and a bad person for other worse reasons but if i can be real for a moment "proship DNI" in bio means nothing to me. if you want to keep me out you're going to need to line your blog with salt and iron or rat poison or something.
actually if i were to be less flippant and more brutally honest with you all my disdain for it stems from how much of it is just a thinly veiled excuse for people to fight about their fictional relationship preferences or simply for the sake of arguing without any investment in the reality of what they're claiming to represent and then take pride in their empty, performative activism. i still recommend the rat poison though.
girl help they are calling me a pedophile sympathiser in the notes for trying to point out that being disgusted by something is not the same as meaningfully working to prevent and safeguard against it by critically engaging with the complex reality of it. can i please just have the rat poison.

Happy Pride everyone, today is the tenth anniversary of the nationwide right to gay Marriage in the United States and the 22nd anniversary of nationwide legalization of Gay Sex. In 2 days is the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
We have won nothing without fighting and we have everything to lose, there is no gay liberation without trans liberation, none of us are free till all of us are free, we have won so much and come so far but the road ahead is still long, we must continue to fight for both our liberation and the liberation of all people
The gay liberation movement is young, everything we have fought for and won happened over the course of less than a human lifetime, and there are forces at play that wish to claw back at these hard fought for rights, we must be prepared to defend what we have fought for and we must continue to fight for improvement
We have to celebrate how far things have come, because we never would have made it this far without joy and hope, and while we can and must fight, we also must remain hopeful
This year is:
11 years since nationwide gay marriage in the US
23 years since sodomy was legalized
57 years since Stonewall
happy birthday, gilbert baker. (june 2, 1951 β march 31, 2017)
