everyone on instagram seems to hate Emily Wilson (I frequently see "I've heard her translations are bad"any time translations of the Odyssey or the Iliad get brought up) but when I look into different translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey literally anywhere else I pretty much only see people either really liking her translations or being more neutral towards them and even if they dislike them they aren't usually vitriolic about it. very odd.

#in this case looking into translations also includes asking my mom (because she's a classicist) and she likes Wilson a lot #don't tell my mom I called her a classicist she thinks it sounds pretentious.#anyways a lot of dismissals of her translations often feel pretty misogynistic to me. Like okay she can't have both good poetry and #completely perfect word to word translations well okay guess what no one else has either!!#As far as I can tell anyways.#And like it's fine to prefer more direct translations than hers and I do often see people who do and are #reasonable about it but then I see any discussion about her on instagram and it's all just ''well I heard that everyone hates her #and thinks her translations are the worst''#I've also seen some disagreements in how she's interpreted some characters which I also think are usually reasonable #but on instagram it turns into uggh she RUINED my favorite character!!!#Idk I'm obviously not an expert seeing as I haven't read the Iliad or the Odyssey yet but the way people talk about Emily Wilson #on that app is so frustrating to me for some reason
