I think the reason I still enjoy tumblr is that even though this all still pisses me off, I know that anything that makes me mad on here is 100% earnest. It's not ragebait or engagement farming, y'all are actually just that stupid sometimes
thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.

the poster that this incredible illustration is based on is extremely striking. but while searching for it, I also found earlier posters for conveying this message along with a corresponding one for summer, and I fucking love them. absolutely lovely graphic design work. (both are from 1924, artist is Austin Cooper)
the one I was looking for originally also has a summer variant. (artist is Frederick Charles Herrick: 'it is warmer below' is from 1927, 'it is cooler below' is 1926)
I also like Edward McKnight Kauffer’s London Underground posters, the 1923 Natural History Museum one is such cool piece of visual art

I wish you would let this inspire you. I wish that seeing a piece of abstract art would move you to self expression.
I wish you would go to the craft store, buy a cheap canvas and some cheap paint and let yourself play with color and form just to see if you can.
I wish that there were more amateur painters, trying their hand at geometric abstraction and color field painting. That would be so fucking cool.

Got to see these beautiful pieces in person at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
God I want to try working in oil paint so bad, but I've never done it. It seems so intimidating. But oh the TEXTURE you get.
I used to be such a snob about abstract art. I’d say the same ignorant shit, like "a kid could do that" or whatever. And you know what? A kid could! Because kids are uninhibited in ways that adults aren’t. That’s why abstract is much more difficult than it looks.
A professor of mine in college kept trying to get me to loosen up. She told me to cut up some old work and try collaging it. I couldn’t do it. They were all too careful, too precious. It was impossible for my brain to just lay things down and see what would happen without trying to "correct" it.
I finally managed to make a small series about five years ago, when I was going through some heavy stuff. Some of the pieces have text incorporated. It was fun seeing them evolve as I kept working, from careful and trying too hard to finally just letting whatever was going to happen unfold.
So yeah, abstract is harder than it looks.
And for the lady, perhaps reassurance without having to ask for it?

I’m trying to get commissions for my art going after years of it being at the bottom of my priorities. I finally feel like I have a style of my own and the skills to make the art I envision.
Unfortunately, I’m not getting any bites. Instagram is a hellhole due to the algorithm, and tumblr and bluesky don’t seem to be any better. There are AI scammers running rampant on IG and Threads, which seem to be where a lot of people find artists to commission. Also, the US economy is a nightmare, so I’m sure not a lot of people have commission money right now.
I managed to get a VGen invite, so I’m there, but getting verified is an uphill battle. If you’re a fellow VGen artist, I’m happy to follow back! Prices are there, but if you don’t see what you want, just message me on VG and we can discuss.
