TW Poc and LGBT death/violence mentions, as well as r*pe mention.
For real though, The Last of Us getting a continuation game has me super excited. They did a lot of things right with that game, from the graphics, to the story, to r*pe survivor representation, but I’ve got some issues from the first game that reallllllllllly need to be fixed by the release, and I’m hoping Naughty Dog can do better with part 2: (((Beyond this point thar be major spoilers for TLoU and the Jak games)))
•They need to make more black and other POC characters for major story rolls other than that of the villain and/or being killed off to add to the main characters’ sadness. Literally EVERY black person in the first game with a major speaking roll was a “bad person” (or, ya know, going through the hardest choice in their life and there was no real moral right so they just tried to do the best for everyone) and/or was killed just to be used as Joel’s and/or Ellie’s sad fuel and it was honestly ridiculous. And don’t tell me “but all the supporting characters died” because both Tommy and Bill lived to see the credits roll. (Not that their track record for good POC representation is any better in previous games, seeing that Sig is the ONLY black character in all 4 Naughty Dog released Jak and Daxter games, and he had a supposed “death” that was blatantly used for sadness fuel, even if it turns out he survived. He at least ended up had a huge role in Jak 3 ending with him being a ruler of Kras City so that was kinda cool but still they can do so So SOOOO much better.)
•I also need them to give me more gay Ellie because that tiny DLC “sad back story” wasn’t enough. I’m tired of seeing LGBT deaths as story fillers, to add insult to injury in Ellie’s story, Riley was a POC, so it goes along with what I said above. I mean yeah the comic hinted at Ellie being gay but I need ND to give me more main story gayness if you’re gonna give me gayness to start with. Bill coming back would be cool since he was the ONLY LGBT person confirmed in the main game story but he was also kind of a bad person (personality wise) and his back story is another example of LGBT story filler deaths. Just give me a rocking zombie apocalypse lesbian love story that doesn’t end in tears and useless sadness fuel.
•One of the things I really didn’t want to critique in that the TLoU was the women. This game filled to the brim with strong women but they ALL HAD THE SAME PERSONALITY. All of them! Ellie is excused from this as she got lots of development and screen time, but Marlene, Tess, Maria, as great as it was to see women take charge and be really amazing passionate fighters…they were all so similar in character. If they could give the only 3 main women characters in the Jak games varying personalities and them all still be amazing strong women, then they could do the same for a much more realistic and emotional game.
I’ll probably edit and add more as I think of them, and feel free to reblog and add your own, but ND needs to step up with this game!!!!!!! I’m really looking forward to it, so I hope to see improvements!
