i think besides the racism perhaps this season’s greatest flaw is its inability to give events the emotional weight they deserve. like remember how there was a mass shooting this season? me neither! did louis and lestat react at all to finding out claudia is literally in hell? who cares! armand and daniel decapitate loustat. don’t worry though, in what i’m sure one r. jones believes is a masterful use of foreshadowing as a literary device, dr. fareed has conspicuously announced a few episodes ago that they’ll probably be fine, so don’t even worry about it. why are we watching this again?

it’s crazy how much people are using the “unreliable narrator” excuse to justify bad writing and pacing. there was no need to do so in the first and second season because everything flowed perfectly, the characterisation made perfect sense, every little scene had weight and narrative consequences. no devil’s minion isn’t incredibly rushed because lestat doesn’t care about them. it’s bad writing. no, louis didn’t completely ignore claudia’s terrible state in the afterlife and simply went on to flirt with lestat because lestat is an unreliable narrator. it’s bad writing. no the flashbacks aren’t two minutes and very cheaply made because lestat doesn’t want to focus on them. it’s bad writing. open your eyes!!!

also we should absolutely question the show's choice to remove gabrielle, magnus and marius' overt antiblackness from the tvl book when the writers got armand out here acting like he's auditioning for kkk grand wizard. clearly the show isn't shying away from depicting antiblack violence considering the treatment of black characters in the past two episodes, so the refusal to depict gabriella, marius and magnus as the white supremacists they were in the source material, is a blatant tell- the writers are protective of their white characters, even the antagonists, and don't want them to seem "too" evil (which tracks for white and nonblack liberals acting like being called racist is worse than being racist.) and this clearly isn't a concern they have when it comes to the characters of color- armand has for 2 seasons now enacted forms of explicit violence inflicted on enslaved black people- louis and claudia's cut ankle tendons, the entire public humiliation of the trial, claudia's burning, louis' head on a spike, coercing him into a performance of self-debasement and contrition and branding his body- and claudia calls her black father a slave in a bioessentialist, derogatory context and expresses a level of internalized antiblackness she was never even hinted at feeling when she was alive. in both scenes, the narrative is much harsher on louis than on lestat and the nonblack writers go into extreme detail in their antiblack dialogue and racialized, borderline pornographic depiction of louis' torture. but gabriella is portrayed shallowly complimenting louis' beauty when realistically she would be calling him slurs when talking about him to lestat, magnus' "master race" aspirations and fixation on white supremacist beauty standards for how he chose his victim pool and "heir" aren't addressed, and marius' racial politics ("rotten boy", the whitewashed portrait of armand- we know he's racist, the show just hasn't acknowledged it and intentionally excluded the parts of tvl where he expresses that racism when talking to lestat) remain an elephant in the room. and ofc the way the writers are tryna be like "see lestat isn't racist, black people love him" in-universe through characters like merrick and paul (lol. lmao even) and tryna overwrite or dance around every textual example of lestat's antiblackness is so transparent in its clumsiness.

the decision of the writers of tvl to not clarify lestat's role in the trial, why he was there, how exactly and to what extent he was coerced, to never address it, to never have lestat explain himself to louis, but to treat it as though lestat is obviously innocent and has nothing to explain.........................................................profound

I'm so tired of claudia/lestat parallels in the show, fandom, and interviews with the cast. They're overdone, oversaturated, and so very boring. They ultimately only ever serve as masturbatory laments on lestats traumatic upbringing and they disservice claudia as a character by reducing every one of her traits and actions to falldown from her white abuser. The ripped out pages scene was particularly egregious but theyve been doing this for a long time.

It's just crazy how from an actual Armand perspective his actions make sense because of course he's turning all this on Louis, the one person who never had any power to truly hurt him, but then Rolin Jones will stand up and look you dead in the eyes and say "yeah we just felt like Louis needed to be genuinely punished for his treatment of Armand" and I have no idea what the fuck to do with that
