Sophos (a panicked and therefore chatty Baby, having the first Adventure TM of his young life): What is this?
Gen (exhausted and in excruciating pain, literally only alive through godly intervention and only ambulatory through sheer willpower and Professional Pride TM), taking a deep breath: It's a river, Sophos.
return of the thief but itâs just irene showing up to eddis and claiming she lost the receipt but sheâs still within the warranty period
âWhat you donât know is Iâd been thinking for some time about deposing the queen of Attolia.â Eugenides blinked.
Eugenidesâs queen and cousin, who is known for her kindness but not for her bloodthirstiness: Iâm thinking about having your crush assassinated.
Eugenides:
hwaet! memory-mother, in meadhall sing the hatred, from heartlocks broken, of achilles peleusson, cursed by his people, wreaker of woes unending. often his spear made the mighty drink to dogs, food for the feathered, strong souls banished to breathe in the dark.
deep it was driven, the doom of zeus, since they stood sundered, bitter in boasting, atreusson the people-king, and sun-bright achilles. but who in heaven struck up their strife? the son of leto, livid at the king, spelled sickness, and the people perished, for atreusson harmed his holy priest, chryses.
spear-greeks he sought by the swift sea-steeds, daring, undaunted, his daughter to ransom, bearing garlands of the arrow-guiding god on a golden staff. he sank before spear-greeks, saying to them and the sons of atreus, people-guides: âsons of atreus, and strong-scaled spear-greeks, may the mighty gods in their mountain-helming halls give you Priamâs gore-gold, and glorious homecoming. only unchain my child, in exchange for this ringhoard, with honor for him, the arrow-hailing son of zeus.â
is this the illiad as a norse saga? iâm in love.
Sumerian-style addition!
Bitter is the wail for you Achilles,
The wail I sing for you!
Bitter is the wail for you Achilles,Â
Of which the goddess sings!
Lo, the storm of his devastation was falling,
The baleful storm reaping itself upon the host of the Achaeans,
The baleful storm, which takes no mercy,
The storm of devastation, which takes no mercy,
Wrought by his anger.
The dark-headed people,
A thousand went to dust below the earth,
In that wind which swirled like hot clay,
The dogs were abandoning their bodies, to the winds,
The birds were abandoning their bodies to the winds,
The insects were abandoning their bodies to the winds,
Zeus was abandoning them, their bodies to the winds,
Open the copper chest with iron locks;Â
The tablet of lapis lazuli tells the story.
Long since Agamemnon, Mycenaeâs wild bull,
And Achilles, Thetisâ son, the black-beared Aurochs,
Did emperil like lions the sheepfold of Troy- the dark-headed people mourn!
Truly the creator had compelled them to strife- the dark-headed people mourn!
Letoâs son, and Zeuâs son Apollo- the dark-headed people mourn!
He let forth the shroud of pestilence upon the city- the dark-headed people mourn!
The hot winds stirred it forth- the dark-headed people mourn!
And the pestilence shrouded the city like the dead.
The twelfth year having gone, the month ended,
Atreusâ son of princely office,
Atreus son of princely office,
Chryses in his holy house,
His temple of lapis and cedar,
His mighty name with unclean hands dishonoured.

Iâm excited to show off this commissionâpay me to draw my favorite fictional character? Yes thank you! This is a drawing of Attolia Irene from the Queens Thief series, designed as if it were for a coin. The commissioner is going to put this on a necklace and Iâm excited to see how the final comes out!
I have started my reread of The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, and from the looks of it, it appears Iâm going to have a lot to say. You have been warned. Spoiler-filled waters lie ahead.
Taken together, these three sections from the meeting of the Magus and the thief are telling me that Gen has already been here before. He did his research and recon legwork, and is already familiar with this study, possibly even when stealing the kingâs seal.
The reason I care about this and love it is that Iâm getting some huge Goldilocks vibes here, that Gen also took some time to test out the Magusâs chairs while he was here so he already knows which chair he wants when brought here for this scene. âThis oneâs too hard, this oneâs too soft, but thisâŚthis is the nicest one.â
ever since i reread thick as thieves last week my brain has rly just been: *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks about kamet and costis* *thinks abo
The fact that Attolia is the only one of the three countries whose name has the feminine conjugation so that when Gen marries the queen and he becomes Attolis it's still his wife who embodies the country of Attolia which is why making Gen high king is truly an alliance between the three monarchs and not just subjugating Eddis and Sounis under Attolia
Gotta meet my âdraw Attolia Irene monthlyâ quota. I think Iâm ahead. Which is good, because Iâve started on a QT illustration project that might take me awhile to finish⌠đ

I adore that queen's thief is an alternate history fantasy book about how the greek peninsula getting its shit together so it can repel an ottoman invasion.
torn between frustration at all the little details that pherisâs narration skips over/dismisses and delight that this is his Thing as a narrator. like âhereâs every single romantic drama i heard about in the palace. hereâs what the historians get wrong about the war. hereâs something i am 90% sure happened behind closed doors. if you canât figure out these women are pregnant from the handful of vague hints that iâm dropping then thatâs on youâ
Attolia: Youâre a loose cannon, Gen.
Eugenides: No, Iâm not. Iâm a cannon maybe, but a loose cannon? Is that what you think of me?
Eddis: I think you play by your own rules.
Teleus: No way, he thinks rules were made to be broken.
Attolia: Those are all attributes of a loose cannon.
Eugenides: No, Iâm just a reckless renegade. Costis is a loose cannon.
Costis: *punches the king*
imo costis and kamet are largely absent from rott bc kamet read parts of pherisâs account while it was still being written, specifically the bits where he casually dissects reliusâs personal life, and said âdonât you fucking dareâ

one of those pronunciation voice memes but itâs just names from the queenâs thief and itâs actually a ploy so i can finally find out how to pronounce âormentiedesâ
@rachiller a fair point, they definitely helped me with the Mede names and some of the Sounisian names as well but also, the audio books (both the narrators) pronounce Eugenides wildly different than I do so once I heard it I just went

I am listening to Thick as Thieves again and I just
I love Costis
He is the best
Kamet STOP UNDERESTIMATING HIM
Kamet: this is my book. It is about me. I am narrating.
Me: OOH LOOK COSTIS
Kamet: this is about me. The Attolian is stupid.
Me: Costis! You are wonderful!
Kamet: I am really smart. Attolians are not.
Me: Costis.
Kamet: the Attolian.... May be smarter than I thought.
Me: ah haha YAY KAMET NOW YOU LOVE HIM TOO I told you this book is about Costis.
Kamet: this book is about Costis. But I am still narrating.
Any Baron of Attolia: Iâm gonna outwit the puppet king and take power for myself.
Gen, crouched in the hidden passage above him and smiling like a fiend: Iâm about to end this manâs whole career.
