Bisexual - attraction to multiple genders where gender is a factor within the attraction, and can include a preference for one gender over another, or attraction that feels different when it’s directed at a specific gender.

Pansexual- attraction to people regardless of gender. Gender is not a factor, you’d expect a blanket sensation of attraction regardless of which gender it is attracted to, and no sense of intuitive gender preference (though perhaps a logical one).

femme and butch are both historically lesbian terms that are used very specifically for lesbians. a femme can ONLY be a lesbian bc it is an identity specifically abt subverting gender roles assigned to by men and performing femininity for other women, completely rejecting men. it can only be for lesbians bc its abt being attracted to only women. 

I have also seen those posts say that biphobia is a myth, and that lesbians who reject bi women for being bi are a “lesbophobic myth”. The reality is, the elimination of bisexuals from our own narratives, the myth that you can source 1950s slang in a pure lesbian-only, never-looked-at-a-man mythic past, goes hand in hand with modern biphobia.

This post was written specifically counter to the concept that “femme” is a lesbian-only word.

If you want a pure lesbian term that has only ever been used by someone who is never attracted to men, I suggest you go plant a flag in a term that ISN’T used my MLM. Because “femme” has been used by gay men to describe themselves and each other for decades. 

It isn’t just innocent “We want our own vocabulary!” when you’re claiming one of the most common adjectives used for gender presentation in the English language, and when you cite a specific provenance for it, it is a provenance that bisexual women are equally entitled to inherit from.

What you’re talking about is confidence. Which, sure, different things make different women feel confident. But that has nothing to do with feminism? Individual women feeling confident isn’t going to dismantle patriarchy, because patriarchy is not caused by women’s insecurity.

So, again, as a feminist, my focus is not on what makes individual women feel good. What I care about is the liberation of all women. I don’t wear makeup, and it’s not because I “feel empowered” when I don’t. It’s because the beauty industry is terrible to women and I want as little of my money going to it as possible.

Radfems aren’t going to give you a cookie for making choices that make you feel good, but don’t do anything to liberate women. Honestly, if you have free choices you’re more privileged than most women, and you should probably spend more time thinking about how to help them, rather than which choice makes you feel most confident.

I have this thing called political convictions and class understanding. With the current gendered (sex rolls) culture I don’t think of following the enforced stereotypes of feminity and womanhood is healthy or a truly free choice. Not to mention it’s built on predatory capitalism. It’s also grooming, patriarchal, and plays into paedophilia and abuse culture.

Yes its the choice of another woman, but one that is harmful to her. Not every choice is good because someone made it. Im, not an individualist liberal, I analyse structures of oppression. It’s not “"evil”“ metaphysically but it is detrimental to all women, eg a problem I want to solve. So in the end choice is important one-on-one but useless as a tool of political change.

As for trusting men, well statistically not trusting them is logical. and on a class analysis level #yesallmen. I don’t think ever male and female friendship or partnership is abusive but I also think that it’s perfectly justified to distrust men and to want to liberate women from them. Regardless of you finding or knowing a good man. Again individualism is fine in relationships but useless in a revolution.

Like it or not, the medical definition is as stated in the DSM-V, and the medical concencus is that not all trans people experience gender dysphoria (i.e. clinically significant distress associated with gender incongruence).

A strong desire to be of a gender other than one’s assigned gender

a strong desire to be treated as a gender other than one’s assigned gender

A significant incongruence between one’s experienced or expressed gender and one’s sexual characteristics

a strong desire for the sexual characteristics of a gender other than one’s assigned gender

a strong desire to be rid of one’s sexual characteristics due to incongruence with one’s experienced or expressed gender

a strong conviction that one has the typical reactions and feelings of a gender other than one’s assigned at birth

notice the first two criteria say that you want to be a different gender and you want to be treated like a different gender. theres no way you can be trans if you dont meet at least two of these six criteria. it’s literally non-sensical. and honestly, i personally think these aren’t strict enough.

a person who really specialized with gender therapy isn’t going to diagnose you with “gender incongruence”, they’re going to diagnose you with gender dysphoria, because you need gender dysphoria to be trans. both my endo and my therapist constanly stress the importance of having gender dysphoria as a diagnosis because the medical world needs to see the science behind gender dysphoria. if we just ignore gender dysphoria as a diagnosis, then transition can be de-medicalized and it won’t be covered by insurance (i literally had this discussion with my endo when i saw him last week). so dont spread lies about what gender dysphoria is and isnt.
