I remember when our class had went to the Tate modern I had over heard the teachers saying they where worried that the guys in our class wouldnt understand what the point of what Sarah Lucas works were and sadly they where right. Not only did they not understand the point but they had found her work amusing and had giggled at it bare in mind these are 17-23 year olds . Rebecca (a teacher) had tried to explain the point of the work while we where viewing it but it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears and I can’t help but think why didn’t we have a class discussion about her work the day before going? We were already talking about the meeting point and the plan for the day so why hadn’t the teachers held an open discussion about the work? Even after we saw the exhibition we could’ve spoken about it but we chose not to.

Art is perfect for open discussions and I think a lot of people would’ve benefited from it not only as a way of learning how other people give meaning to work but as a way to think about how they could make art that has a meaning.

Once you see her work I think a lot of people will understand why some immature guys would’ve laughed at it which is why I think an open discussions about her work and what other people thought about it would’ve been even more important. To a lot of people this work shows how men will look at women not as a person but as desirable traits and will go as far as to not even remember their face, personality or humanity. These discussions need to happen especially in classrooms and more so in art.

i know it's silly of me to be upset over a movie but like DISNEY HAS VERY BIG MONEY AND INFLUENCE, THEREFORE AN IMPACT ON CULTURE.

I think it's probably just that I had an ED and was very sick for a long time and so I'm extra sensitive but it just. Feels like it's glorifying something that's not healthy for him. He's that thin because he's disabled and sick and underfed.

As a fandom, glorifying Viktor's small waist is a bit of a problem here, and we need to stop it. As in less of this type of shit. Less art focusing on how Jayce can fit his hands around Viktor's waist. Less making Viktor more feminine in personality and body shape because he's thin. Especially when tying it to his headcanoned transness. Here's a list of some things I (and others in the replies and tags of this) have noticed about it:

The problem with feminizing one man in a M/M relationship to make it more heteronormative

The problem with glorifying low weight or a specific body shape, even though it's part of disease or literal starvation from poverty

The problem with creating a stereotype that all trans men are thin (especially that they're white, thin, and feminine)

I understand that thin people are attractive to a lot of people. I understand that I can't control what other people draw, write, headcanon, joke about, etc.

There's an underlying mentality behind those pieces of art, those stories, those headcanons and jokes. The obsession with Viktor's waist comes from roots of heteronormativity, fatphobia, and stereotyping of trans men. Not only that, but femininization of Viktor has roots in ableism. Viktor's body should be appreciated as it is as a disabled man's body, not as a feminine body. He's thin because he's lost so much weight. His hips are wider because those are his bones. It's not a feminine body shape. That's what a person looks like when they're starving. This isn't an hourglass shape, it's not the body type he wants for himself. We see his desired body shape in his astral form. It's fuller, brighter, and yes, masculine. If he wanted himself to be feminine, he would have done so.

As for his machine herald form, again the obsession with his waist is still related to fatphobia. This isn't something that should be coveted. And the excuse that "its Gender though" doesn't work here if the only reason someone likes the herald form is because it's thin.

I'm not throwing out words like heteronormativity, fatphobia, and ableism just as buzzwords. When people in this fandom obsess over this, THOSE are the things they're perpetuating. Not to mention the stereotyping that happens when people headcanon Viktor as trans.

To be clear, this is not to condemn anyone who has participated in this idea either. The artists, writers, people in general, are not BAD people for this, it's just something to be brought up and talked about. Fixed, where possible. I'm trying to start a conversation, not cancel anyone.

The obsession with Viktor's waist, AND with feminizing Viktor in general, is becoming a genuine problem in this fandom. It's hurting people here, either in just deep discomfort or genuine sadness at the way Viktor is mischaracterized and misrepresented in this fandom. Not only is it harmful, but its just not accurate to Viktor's character either. He did not transform himself because he's trans, he did it because of disability. This is not a trans allegory, its a disability one.

I think I and a lot of people in our shared fandom would be happier and more comfortable if the obsession with Viktor's waist was dialed back a bit.
