There are a lot of reasons I think it's an ethical good to minimize engagement with proprietary gen AI, many of which are materialist (minimizing contributions to techno-fascism, to ecocide, to the demoralization and deskilling and global stratification of labor, etc.). But in the specific context of fandom I think a big part of what bums me out about the proliferation of proprietary-AI use is the way it erodes the human collaboration that can be one of the greatest affordances of fannish creation. Even if people are using gen AI for things that seem ancillary to writing, like brainstorming or editing or translating (and I would personally argue that those activities are in fact integral to writing), that's still outsourcing to a corporately owned tool of knowledge enclosure what could be the foundation for building relationships and learning with other people. It can be scary and hard and lonely to look for those people when you're new in a fandom space, or if you're shy or experience social anxiety, but like so many other things, if one stops putting in the effort, one stops building the skills. And thinking about a version of fandom where fewer and fewer people collaborate: that really feels like a loss.
I think too the amateur, communal ethos of fandom, combined with legal barriers to selling fanworks, has helped it partially resist the pull of commodification, and that's why the labor that goes into making fanworks is so much less alienated than in the general market: many fans really do feel that what they're offering when they share fanworks is not primarily the finished product but the time and effort and care that went into making it (the things that get mystified under commodity fetishism), and that's part of why instances in which someone passes off outsourced labor as their own are experienced as undermining the fundamental values of the fandom exchange.

Continuing my Behind Blue Eyes series (young!Tony/ recovering!Winter Soldier!Bucky) with another installment. Bucky reaches out to a former ally for help in keeping Tony safe and defeating Hydra. Chapter Three was posted May 14 and I need to figure out where to take this next - as I think Bucky + Coulson has bromance potential.
Life Isn’t Simple When You Do What They Do
Still playing with the idea of making this fic (established Stony with modern!Bucky as an eventual third) into a Choose Your Own Adventure where it branches off after Chapter 2 into either a Mafia AU (currently Chapter 3) or a Superhero Identity Porn fic.

Got Chapter Two of this No Powers omegaverse fic posted last Friday. It features young omega!Tony being manipulated by his alpha, Ty (and guardian Obie). Beta!Bucky was hired to be Tony’s chaperone/bodyguard - but recognizes Ty’s tactics and is encouraging Tony to be a runaway fiancé. Lady Natasha's Consort and Lord Steve's Companion
I resurrected this WIP Van Winkle in hopes of filling my TSB AU: Royalty square, but I ran out of time. While I do plan on carrying that square over to the next round, I’m hoping to keep a bit of momentum on this fic going in the meanwhile. Chapter Five is kicking off with 295 words and the rest of this first scene sketched out in my mind - not sure where it will go next.

I’m not sure how many people realize that there’s a way in which hurt/comfort is actually very kinky, because at its core you’ve got this emotional power exchange fantasy where one character is vulnerable and helpless and the other takes care of them. In the case of stories involving grievous injuries, where someone is bedridden for a long time, you often end up with two characters in a 24/7 total power exchange relationship without a safeword. It just doesn’t involve as many whips and dog collars.

The KIDS act (which contains KOSA) passed the US house, so I would recommend calling your senators and telling them to vote in opposition. I don't think I need to stress the importance of being able to use the internet freely and without privacy barriers being breached.
There are many scripts online you can follow, many ways to tweak your message to fit your senator (ESPECIALLY if they are up for reelection this year). Whether it's a recording you reach or a real person, be straightforward, don't argue, just let your rep know that you are a constituent and you oppose the KIDS act, etc.
Here is where you can search for your senator... call, email, fax, bring them physical letters, show up in person to their offices if you are able.
i just called both my senators offices and it took 30 seconds or less each. if youve never called before here's what to expect:
maybe hold music for like a minute most depending
someone usually picks up right away in my experience
someone who works in the office will be the one answering. they will ask for your zipcode, and what youre calling about (theyve got their customer service voice on, so it eases things a little for those who are nervous)
you can say "i'm calling as a concerned constituent and would like to submit a comment"
say your business. be straightforward, and honest, as the above suggests. you can say its dangerous.
afterwards you can say "that's all for today. thank you" and the call can be over
and tell your friends! do it while youre waiting on laundry, or otherwise in between tasks, on your lunch break, what have you. we got this

hi! i was going through your answered asks and previous posts where i saw you use the words proship/proshipper and profic. could you please define these terms? i've just heard them used a lot (not just on your blog but a few others too) and i'd like to know what they mean. as far as i understand it means that you're for shipping any and all characters with each other regardless of whether or not they have support from canon?

proship means “you believe people can ship whatever they want even if the ship is taboo and controversial (like incest, an adult and a minor, or a sex offender and their victim, etc), even if you are personally uncomfortable with the ship. so proship covers everything, be it a canon and healthy ship, a non-canon ship, or a taboo ship. the core value is that you can separate fiction from reality and you basically mind your own business and let people ship whatever they want as long as no one in real life is harmed. so even if you personally find a ship disgusting, as long as you don’t shame or harass people who enjoy the ship and just mind your own business, ignore/mute/block what you don’t want to see, then by the definition you’re proship.”
being proship also means you’re against censorship and you’re against harassing real people over fiction.
proship and profic overlap a lot.
profic means the same thing as proship, the only difference is that while proship focuses on ships, profic focuses on fanfics. but their core values are the same thing: “censorship is bad. don’t harass real people over fiction. curate your own internet experience, mind your own business and let others do whatever they want as long as it’s fiction and no one in real life is harmed.”
