I am hoping that this is some sort of exaggeration or oversimplification because this is just blatant erasure of a major element of Greek culture and replaced by a more Christian version and I want to bang my head into a wall. That’s not what xenia is, and you just erased a major part of the Odyssey.
@watchanddream Sure! This got a bit lengthier than I intended, but I wanted to try and be thorough.
Put far too simply, xenia is the practice of hospitality, but it's also a ritual and in a sense a contract between guest and host. When a stranger arrives at your doorstep, you're expected to feed them and give them a gift as the host. Typically, you're not even supposed to ask them their name until they've finished their meal. Once you've done this as the host, the guest is now expected to share stories and information about themselves, and not burden you or your household. Typically, people focus on how hosts violate xenia, but guests can also violate xenia.
This is called a guest-friendship, and once it's established, you are expected to offer the same to your host should they ever visit. It's a ritual of hospitality, yes, but it's also used to establish alliances and can be passed down through generations. For example, in the Iliad, when Glaucus and Diomedes discover that their grandparents were guest-friends, they decide not to fight, but rather exchange armor.
Theoxeny is a common story you see in myth where a god (typically Zeus) disguises themselves as a mortal and requests to be hosted by someone. Should the host follow the rules of xenia, they'll be rewarded, but if they fail, they'll be punished or killed.
This is important to the Odyssey, as it comes up multiple times, but in particular, the cyclops, and the suitors. In both these instances, Odysseus arrives disguised and gives a false name, the practices of xenia are failed, and Odysseus reveals himself and punishes the one that failed to follow xenia. The suitors in particular fail xenia, as they both fail as hosts, AND as guests, for burdening Odysseus's household.
Xenia being treated as the golden rule comes across to me like a Christian reinterpretation, as while many Greek philosophers did have something similar to the golden rule, those were philosophers, and the idea that it's a religious command from a god seems much more in line with a Christian idea of where the rule comes from. (Note, I'm aware that other religions had something similar, even as a command from a god, but I highly doubt Nolan is drawing inspiration from those instances)
Also, like, if you really had to shove a ham-handed reeference that the anglosphere would recognise (which you don't!)? Guest Right from Game of Thrones was right there and, although stil wrong, was significantly closer.
it really is quite bad for your military to have an image of itself as a warrior class. what you really want is for your soldiers to think of themselves as boring professionals who will fill out a report form if someone gets a little too warrior ethos out there

Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.
If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

the FAA air traffic controller scandal was entirely due to this. black people just did not apply to be ATC operators. if they accepted every single black person who applied, they still would not have enough black people to not be judged as Intentionally Doing A Racism, so they had to intentionally lower the supply of ATC operators just so the percentage of them that was black would be higher. nobody noticed this was insane.
when you look at the communities or fields that have a Good Ratio of minorities, zero of them ever do it by the means that progressives demand. Capcom and Midway and SNK did not do anything in particular to intentionally make fighting games more welcoming to black people, and black people fucking love fighting games. Japanese anime studios didn't do anything to intentionally make anime more welcoming to Latinos, and Latinos fucking love anime. Nail salons are almost entirely Vietnamese and Jews do a lot of work in finance.
the fact of the matter is that members of An Identity Class usually hang out with members of the same Identity and you pick up interests from people you hang out with. a bunch of Vietnamese refugees got taught how to do manicures and pedicures by Dusty Coots in the 70s, and they ran nail salons with that knowledge, and then the people they hung out with were mostly Vietnamese and those people were like "huh, nail salon, that's a thing I can do," and you knew people who could train you how to do it. other ethnicities could have done that -- Dusty Coots learned it from somewhere -- but it's not really on the radar.
Jewish people historically did finance because they were some of the only people in the world who didn't erupt into a blood rage at the concept of an interest-bearing loan. so they had a culture of being good at it, and if you hang out with Jewish people all the time you probably know a lot of guys in finance and have several family members in it so when you're thinking about what you wanna do "finance" is one of the first things that comes to mind, you know people who can get you a position somewhere and you know that it's a nice living to make. other ethnicities do it too but non-Jewish people probably don't have nearly as many acquaintances in finance.
Latin American countries did not have a big TV industry in the 80s and 90s with a bunch of original Spanish or Portuguese-language programs, but Japanese anime was cheap to license and easy to dub so a bunch of Latinos grew up watching anime, and now if you hang out with Latinos you know a lot of guys who want you to watch Naruto and Dragonball because they think they're super cool.
In the 1990s, arcades were far more profitable in high-density urban areas and high-density urban areas have a lot more black people in them. fighting games were the main draw of arcades because Internet matchmaking didn't exist, ports to home consoles were always much worse quality, and their main draw was player-vs-player (good at a place where a bunch of people meet up) rather than player-vs-CPU (can do that at home). so a bunch of black people really got into Street Fighter II, and if you hang out with black people, you probably know a disproportionately large number of people who love fighting games and have fun with them and want to play against you.
sewing and quilting were economically vital but less physically taxing tasks that don't require a lot of movement, so traditionally women did them in the house while looking after the kids. and if you're a girl you hung out more with your mother even after this division of labor wasn't necessary. now that it;s no longer a necessity in any household, the people who still do it as a hobby are people who like doing it, and if you're a woman you hang out with other women who are themselves more likely to have found out they enjoy quilting and knitting and so on.
all of these things are historically contingent reasons + people generally hanging out with members of their own Identity. none of these things are an effort to make something More Inclusive.
autistic nerds loved Dungeons and Dragons because in the 1970s and 80s, fantasy in general was seen as far more nerdy than it is now, it required a far smaller but far more dedicated group of people than other hobbies, and it had lots and lots of delicious charts to pore over. and the guy who invented it was white so he mostly hung out with other white nerds. so if you were a white nerd it was more likely you knew people who played dungeons and dragons who wanted you to play with them and clearly had fun with it. they're not the unique outlier here who are singularly hostile to minorities, it's the same process as everywhere else.
The example of DnD at least is not the example I would use, as DnD is actually quite infamous for having an atmosphere exclusive to women and POC, some of those other examples might also have issues I’m not aware of too. I’m mainly just surprised at how wild and unproductive the air traffic controller example is. I think it’s always worth asking if a lack of specific people in a group might be the product of exclusion, deliberate or otherwise, but I think the takeaway from that example ought to be “Honest research accepts whatever answer the research yields” or something like that. Maybe there is just not enough people from a demographic interested in a professional field sometimes, and it’s better to chase a truly equitable world than it is to manipulate percentages for the appearance of equity.
So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.
