The multicoloured lakes of Mount Kelimutu, Indonesia

Believe it or not, but these lakes really ARE the colours you are seeing!

Located on the Indonesian island of Flores, Mount Kelimutu is an active stratovolcano and features these three stunning lakes (from left to right): Tiwu Ata Polo (the Bewitched or Enchanted Lake), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Ko’o Fai (the Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Mbupu (the Lake of Old People).

The first image features all three lakes (April 2013), while the second shows a nice side-by-side shot of Tiwu Nuwa Muri Ko’o Fai and Tiwu Ata Mbupu (August 2012).

I feel like y’all aren’t appreciating that Okapi are endangered, extremely hard to find animals (even the folks studying them don’t see them, only scat and in camera traps), only ~100 live in zoos worldwide, and I got to MEET TWO OF THEM AND HAVE MY LIFE LIT UP BY THEIR BEAUTIFUL SMILES AND THEY LICKED ME WITH THEIR GIANT AMAZING TONGUES. I FELT THEIR PRECIOUS BREATH ON MY MORTAL HUMAN FLESH. NOTHING WILL EVER COMPARE TO THAT MOMENT.
