Birb ed: Old World v.s. New World Vultures
Griffon Vulture (OW) vs Black Vulture (NW)
New world and old world vultures are not closely related but are actually examples of convergent evolution.
Old world
-Found in Africa, Asia and Europe
- closely related to eagles and hawks
-part of family Accipiteidae
-relies on sight for hunting
-move around by hopping
-talons and such for gripping prey
-hooked beak to open carcasses
Ex: griffon, cinereous, and Egyptian vultures
New world
-Found in the Americas
-closely related to storks
-part of family Cathartidae
-relies on olfactory for hunting
-ground walkers
-flat feet for walking
-wait for other things to open carcasses
Ex: turkey, black, king vultures, and California Condor
No matter which evolutionary version of these stunning species you get to see, remember to appreciate them <3
Today I met a flock of very strange birds that do not live in our area. The photo didn't work out, but I memorized it and sketched it. I can't find it in any books about birds.
This is the great kiskadee I think it looks most similar to your bird! Beautiful drawing by the way
As I work on my wingfic I discover more and more about how horrible it is to clip bird's wings. So PSA:
DON'T CLIP YOUR BIRDS WINGS IT IS UNBELIEVEBLY HORRIBLE FOR THEM AND THEY DESERVE TO FLY FREELY IF YOU CAN'T GIVE IT THAT REHOME IT WITH SOMEONE WHO CAN
GUYS LOOK AT THIS VULTURE I DREW

BIRD NEWS
On April 9th of this year the Emperor penguin was reclassified from a near-threatened to endangered species. The habitat loss from global warming is severely effecting the populations of these aquatic birds!!!!! D:
Pigeons are one of the most exploited animals on the planet, and I'm tired of it.
Despite what the media may have told you or what your next-door neighbor spouts, yes. Pigeons can be pets, and their story and exploitation are among the saddest known to mankind.
Domestic pigeons, otherwise known as Columba livia, are a domesticated species of bird that you'll often see scavenging on what's left of a pink sprinkled donut on the side of New York City or San Francisco streets, or roosting above a busy highway in Cincinnati or Seattle. Those gray birds, usually with black bars or mottles all over their wings and their beautiful iridescent heads, coo as they walk, and their wings ring with noise as they take off.
Pigeons are one of humanity's greatest victims. In the World Wars, pigeons were bred and used as messengers where modern-day technology was absent. In World War II, they were the second-most decorated animal, right behind dogs. Popular war pigeons include Mary of Exeter, who flew four successful missions despite three German attempts to stop her from delivering messages. She was attacked by a hawk. On the next, she landed with a missing wing top and three shotgun pellets in her body. The next? Shrapnel injuries were so severe that a collar was made to hold her head up.
But what happened after the wars? Well, we developed better technology, like wireless technology. Pigeons were becoming uneeded, and in many cases, discarded. Thousands of pigeons across continents were released. People had no use for them anymore. Now, they live in our cities, where our architecture fits their ancestors' natural habitat of cliff ledges and small caves, and where humans litter their food and provide them with improper sustenance.
After release or escape, pigeons proliferated to the millions. It's estimated that around 200 million or more pigeons exist in feral populations. Over a million pigeons (up to 4 million) are thought to live in New York City alone. The city even recognizes them as a part of their identity.
There's another unfortunate side to the pigeon community: racing. Pigeons were recognized and bred for their homing capabilities. As the need for them diminished, some began to breed them for racing. These individuals would take a group of pigeons to a designated distance and have them fly back home.
The issue? This wasn't a measly mile or two. The races can range anywhere from ten miles to over one thousand. The longest journey a pigeon took was 7,200 miles (11,600 km), from France to Vietnam, occurring in 1931 over the course of 24 days. Standard pigeon races today for long-distance flying can range to over 600 miles (966 km).
Pigeon racing comes with its faults. At Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue alone, ~80% of their hundreds of birds are racing pigeons. Most pigeons are taken by raptors (birds of prey, like hawks or falcons) or other predators. Others fall ill. Others are injured. Others become so emaciated that their organs begin failing, like my first rescue, Korys.
My own bird, Violet, was found at ~1 year old in 2024, downed and dehydrated. She was found in West Virginia, but her leg band said she belonged to a loft in New Jersey. She ended up being a total unicorn when it comes to pigeons: a cuddly lovebug who can't get enough of me, even with her ex-feral wife, Goose (who I rescued in August 2025).
I've seen horror stories of unethical breeders keeping too many pigeons for them to handle. Some have quarantine procedures that allow risky indirect or direct contact with other birds, or they don't quarantine at all, leading to outbreaks of parasites or disease in their loft. Some breed horrific traits into their birds, like eyes that nearly pop out of their heads, beaks so small they can't feed their own young, or spines so bent that they can't feed themselves properly.
There are many known animal abusers in the pigeon community. Brysen Strowder and Danielle Ramsey, for example, both of whom post like they haven't committed literal animal abuse, with ample evidence against them. And unfortunately, many people believe their sob stories or are blind to them hiding their crimes. Worse off, officials have been called numerous times for a lot of these abusers with no change.
I have no quarrel with ethical breeders. My standards, however, are too high for most. Many breeders, including those I know, are considered unethical by my standards. But when you have hundreds of millions of birds feral, living only 2 to 5 years in the wild, but living well into their teens in captivity, your standards have to be strict.
Pigeons have been exploited for far too long, and I consider them my Roman Empire.
Parking lot killdeer nest. We are planning to put up a bit of a barrier around her today so hopefully people will stop nearly stepping on her or letting their dogs investigate her or their kids try to catch her. What the fuck guys.
She is taking this mama stuff VERY seriously, I only wish she had taken nest spot selection just as seriously, cuz this was not the best choice, lol.
EEEEE! Thank you so so so much for protecting your community birbs! Seeing those little fledglings make it will be worth it!

It’s nesting season for Canadian geese, what does that mean for you and your local bird couple?
Their nesting season is from the tail end of February to the middle of May. They lay 2-12 eggs in large ground nests normally found near water; however, they may also settle in urban areas.
What do I do if a pair nests near me?
Nothing! In the U.S. Canadian geese are a protected species under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act along with 1,000 other migratory bird species. The MBTA makes it illegal to pursue, hunt, kill, capture, possess, or sell any part of the birds, their eggs, or nests without a permit. This means that moving or destroying their nests is illegal.
I need to move a nest, how do I get a permit? & Prevention
First of all please please please do not apply for a permit to move these nests unless it poses a safety hazard to the geese or yourself. I promise that they aren’t malignant creatures! Instead use prevention methods to hopefully stave off geese. To prevent, you can use decoys of predators and move them every 1-2 days, keep your grass long (they prefer shorter grass), reflective objects, removing food sources, putting grape extract on your grass (they don’t enjoy the taste), or motion activated sprinklers to scare them away. If you must get a permit you need to register online with USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) and adhere to guidelines about the removal itself and the process after.
Weekly PSA: DON’T FEED BREAD TO BIRDS
There are plenty of reasons not to give bread, crackers, or chips to our lovely feathered friends!
1. Moldy bread pollutes the waters of our lovely aquatic birds.
2. No nutrients are gained, in fact these empty calories prevent birds from getting essential calories!
3. Deformities like angel wing where the joints twist permanently and leave many birds like swans, ducks, and geese unable to fly stem from a high calorie and low nutrient diet!!!!
4. Feeding birds bread can cause a dependency making it difficult for birds to find food.
5. Young birds could be stunted growth wise!
Alternative foods!
Waterfowl: thawed frozen peas, or lettuce
Backyard birds: RAW peanuts and sunflower seeds, cracked nuts, apples, chopped grapes, soaked raisins
Hummingbirds: fresh sugar water 1 part sugar to 4 parts water
Crows: soaked dog kibble (beware pf the unseen bonds forged in the dark)
Vulture Appreciation Post
MY FLEDGLINGS, I CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU HOW MUCH I WANT TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF A VULTURE!!!! They are so regal and handsome. But alas owning a vulture is Illegal. I also don’t have the means to humanely house one. My favorite vulture is the bearded vulture!
Did You Know?: Magpie
1. Did you know that magpies mimic sounds better than lyrebirds? It’s harder to tell because they incorporate mimicry into their songs!
2. They can recognize faces of people and other birds. They are one of only a few bird species that can recognize their own face in a mirror.
3. They cleanse themselves of parasites by sunbathing
4. They create HUGE domed nests that take a month to build
5. They lay up to 6 eggs a year
6. Many magpies stay within 10km of their birthplace
7. Magpies are monogamous
8. Magpies, like other corvids grieve
9. Magpies aren’t actually attracted to shiny objects
10. Magpies do not migrate

Endangered Bird Watch: The Imperial Amazon parrot
Native to the island of Dominica, the imperial amazon is severely endangered with 40-60 individuals left. The cause of endangerment is primarily due to habitat loss and degradation. Hurricane Maria wiped 30% of Dominican forest and forced these birds to out source their foraging.
