Tootsie (1982)
[letterboxd]
Nottinghamshire tree, one of Europe’s oldest and largest, fails to produce leaves after being stressed by series of hot, dry summers
Well-intentioned historical interventions have not helped its longevity. In 1904, props and metal chains were installed to support its branches. In the 1960s, hollow parts of the tree were filled with concrete to support it, while limbs were clad with lead, then fibre-glass and even treated with fire-retardant paint.
well that'll do it
It is difficult to determine the true economic impact of what has erroneously come to be called piracy (the word piracy implies unauthorized reproduction for commercial gain, whereas most file sharing is just that—the transfer of digital files with no money changing hands). A number of studies have shown that piracy has little to no effect on purchases, while some have found a positive correlation, presumably because file sharers are also some of the most passionate music fans, and thus the expanded exposure brought about by piracy can increase sales among the devoted. Regardless, the recording labels and their lobbying organizations (RIAA and IFPI) seized upon this development to advance what David Arditi calls the “piracy panic narrative,” a conflation of file sharing with piracy, and thus stealing, which victimizes artists. The news media, much of which was owned by the same conglomerates that owned or had relationships with the recording labels, faithfully relayed this justification for why the recording industry was struggling financially, even though internal industry documents showed that the industry itself acknowledged the host of other reasons that accurately accounted for the drop in sales around the turn of the century: the maturation of the CD-replacement cycle, economic uncertainty, competition from video games and DVDs, the lack of a legitimate MP3 market, and the narrow focus on superstar artists at big-box stores.
Andrew DeWaard, Derivative Media: How Wall Street Devours Culture
I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned “forever” into the only acceptable definition of success.
Like… if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it’s a “failed” business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don’t actually want to keep doing that, you’re a “failed” writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it’s a “failed” marriage.
The only acceptable “win condition” is “you keep doing that thing forever”. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a “real” friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a “phase” - or, alternatively, a “pity” that you don’t do that thing any more. A fandom is “dying” because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.
I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it’s okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success… I don’t think that’s doing us any good at all.

Today's Seals Are: Smack The Baby
Saturn's north pole !
The hexagon is nearly 30,000 km (20,000 miles) wide. This is large enough that two Earths could fit inside the storm with room to spare.
It is a standing atmospheric wave created by a powerful jet stream that wraps around the pole. Winds along its edges can exceed 300 km/h (about 220 mph).
At the very center of the hexagon lies a deep, dark polar vortex that extends hundreds of kilometers down into Saturn's atmosphere.
Spacecraft/Mission: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SSI (Space Science Institute).
Thanks to @shipleaves in the notes for sharing this link, because legit I did not believe this was a real photo (and it isn't exactly, it's been colorized... but the phenomenon is real)
An enormous spinning hexagon in the clouds at Saturn’s north pole has fascinated observers since our first glimpse of it in the 1980s. The l

I’m disabled and I have been perpetually struggling with employment/daily functioning for the past two years. I finally secured a job teaching this summer and the first three weeks were cancelled due to low enrollment. when I shared this with my father, he told me to “stop wasting time.”
typing this out as a reminder to myself that literally WHATEVER you are doing will propel you forward. you are moving through life simply because time is passing. you’re learning by way of experiencing shit whether or not you’re even conscious of it, and that could never be a waste of time. your existence, your survival, your methods of trying, noticing, being, matter. capitalism(fascism) wants us to treat time as a commodity. nobody knows how much of it we have. everyone is doing the best they know how. time passes anyway. so, how are you planning on wasting it? personally, I think masturbation is a very tasteful choice

I'm not even joking when I say that Israeli media is losing their minds. Rettig Gur said "Dust off the nukes" and is calling for even more strikes on Lebanon and Gaza. And there are so many more "journalists" basically saying the same thing.
These people are going to destroy the world. Zionists and their bloodlust will never be satisfied and they will always be an obstacle to peace. The world needs to come together and figure out a way to denazify these people.
Ive never seen a society more incapable of self reflection. These people are carrying out a genocide, bombing Lebanon, trying to keep the world in constant conflict, protesting for the right to rape, killing children daily, and are trigger happy Nazis who just threatened to use nukes but will with a straight face ask people "Do you think Israel has the right to exist 🥺"
No and atp I don't think any of should.
Israel has been killing civilians in Lebanon all night. IDF soldiers tried to further invade Lebanon but were killed by Hezbollah resistance and so Israel decided to take it out on civilians.
Tell me anyone here thinks you can coexist with these people
sometimes i have strong opinions but they're also so inane that halfway through writing a post i'll be like "yeah, this is Absolutely not worth the energy it's taking" and delete everything. but then the opinion is still in my head. and i still want to share it. so within five minutes i go "you know, i bet i can phrase it more succinctly this time" and anyway. you all see where this is going. sometimes i do this four times in a row before i give up on the specific inane opinion and instead write a vague post about the concept of opinions as if that'll satisfy the urge to post the entirety of my inner monologue online. may or may not be relevant to what you're reading right now. and now all our lives have been enriched. you're welcome
once you realize you don’t actually need to sleep, you can really (stops talking abruptly and stares straight ahead for 4 minutes)
you can pry starting sentences with 'and' or 'but' out of my cold, dead hands
op how does it feel to be the most correct person on earth

we're moving to an internet where children would be banned from reaching out for help and friendship online but abusive parents can post their children's every second online to humiliate and expose them for money with no pushback
