being a 60s Dr Who fan is so hard. like hello I'm writing a fanfiction to explore this character's trauma. Yeah his trauma from when he was imprisoned on Mechanus. From when he was imprisoned on Mechanus by the Mechanoids. Stop laughing at him.

On reflection I think i was being a little unfair to The Rescue here. The Chase is perhaps one of the goofiest things Doctor Who has ever done and the fact that Steven's backstory is all wrapped up in it is unfortunate when you're trying to take him seriously. The Rescue on the other hand I remember finding genuinely chilling on first watch.

like i get the impression some people think the twist in Rescue is stupid but i don't understand that at all. the twist pivots it from a run of the mill sci fi story to a psychological drama and well. in effect a story about grooming.

Orin the red hurts more to think about as an old Azula fan like they got the worst hand ever dealt to them and were raised to be weapons and then discarded anyways and they are supposed to be the evil irredeemable counterparts to their siblings that managed to get free and escape the horrible environment they both grew up in while Orin/Azula were in gilded cages unbeknownst to them the whole time and get betrayed and left alone to go insane and rot and die by not only their evil father but by the only allies that they had and no one mourns them and it kills me!!

wait i'm actually so obsessed with the way that the emperor refers to the act of eating brains when it talks about itself vs tav. most often it uses "sustain" (introduction speech, empty brain jar line) and then "assimilate" about eating orpheus' brain and even if it's clear what it means when asked it still tries to like. paint a prettier picture. "consume his thoughts, his knowledge, his brain" when the only thing that matters here is well the brain. but to make it look better it starts with abstractions. while if tav transforms it forgets about all the ways it used to be tactful about it and outright says "feed" so saying "sustain"/"assimilate" is clearly not just the way it talks about eating (also. that newborn mind flayer says "feed" with zero problems so it's not like it's just the illithid way to refer to feeding) but specifically the way it talks about itself. i think it's both about trying to look better to tav and like. being conscious about its mindflayerism <3 "do not judge me" and all when it doesn't even matter if anyone is judging it

So the thing you have to understand about doctor who the movie 1996 is that it isn't good. But it is the best film ever made. It has little to no outstanding qualities as a narrative and is such a wild read of doctor who that if you replaced a few proper nouns throughout it would just be a regular bad sci-fi movie. The fact the series survived it is the reason i'm not worried about canon or the shows future in the slightest. The pitch for it consists of some of the most insane lore retcons i've ever seen in my life, and the only major one to make it into the movie is generally considered so out of left field that people refuse to acknowledge it to this day. Literally nothing matters. The master is goo and also a lizard, seven gets gunned down in the street, paul mcgann is the first doctor to canonically get bitches. There's a motorcycle chase. Bad 90s cgi. the regeneration is a frankenstein reference. its camp. eight has his dogs out. it is somehow more american than you would expect. it features by far the best rendition of the main theme in the shows history. Who fucking cares man. 11/10

You know the Dead Three’s alliance is super brittle- especially by the end of act two- so I doubt that Ketheric would have brought up that the prism-bearer just so happens to be The Dark Urge regardless because fuck his coworkers, he hates them- but also I like to think somewhere in the middle of Gortash telling him to stop sulking and that maybe digging up Isobel was a stupid idea, he just fully decided to take that knowledge to the grave
