the iloveyou worm was a virus that began infecting computers in May of 2000. it was created by a Filipino student, Onel de Guzman. the victim would get an email (likely from the real email of a friend who had already been infected) with the subject line “ILOVEYOU” and an attached “love letter” which was actually the virus. once the attachment was opened, the malware ran, stealing your login info, replacing all your files with copies of itself (effectively deleting them) then uses the victim’s email to send itself to everyone in their contacts, spreading further. patches were eventually developed and the spread was stopped but not before it did billions of dollars of damage. (also, fun fact! the guy who made the virus wasn’t charged for anything besides wire fraud because at the time, the Philippines didn’t have any cybercrime laws yet)
