2. A compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
Dirk and Roxy are my faves, but I can’t see either of them going solely one way or the other. In their cases, it would be a compelling argument for why they’re verses, which is interesting but not the question.
Jake, however, I can make a case for why this man would only top. He is determined to be a proper gentleman, determined to be the hero and the adventurer. While this is indeed a facade he created for himself and boxed himself into, it affects his behavior nonetheless. What better way to be a strapping, manly gentleman than to solely only ever top, to be the one “taking charge” of the situation? This may not be what he actually wants or enjoys, but as long as he remains emotionally restrictive with himself and trapped in his own persona it will continue.

I do think a slept-on relationship in the fandom is the one between Jane and The Condesce.
She pretty much grooms Jane with tech for most of her life. Like, Jane is raised to take over her spot.
And it's presented as this lifelong dream, but she is never seen really questioning why she wants to. Just that she would change things if she were in charge.
But, it's like, her connection to Crocker Corp is also tied to her agency, and it is initially presented as this ambitious career goal, suggesting that this girl knows what she wants in life and is going to make it happen. But we literally see her agency taken away by The Condesce (Thief of Life) when Jane is forced to become Crockertier. And it really puts into question whether she ever really had a choice at all. Cause as we see in the credits, she goes on to recreate Crocker Corp anyways.
Like, damn, Condesce really did successfully program Jane at the end. Because we haven't even talked about how Beta Jane was literally raised by her, and had to go through years of abuse. Alone, mind you, after Beta Jake runs away (oh look, how thematic of him lol).
Beta Jane does open a joke shop, so there is an underlying theme of being a business owner, but I think it's the lack of choice Alpha Jane is granted that's what's interesting. Because Jane could've possibly wanted a quiet life like her counterpart. But she isn't given that choice because she was thoroughly brainwashed into becoming the heir of Crocker Corp.
Anyway, there is a lot to the Condesce and Jane relationship across both timelines that is really interesting to look at, which is what I'm trying to say.
you could never in a million years convince me the guy who has a literal brain ghost version of his best bro didn't reciprocate said best bros romantic feelings even a little. like people acting like dirk is the one most obessesed in this dynamic is hilarious cause he's not the one with an imaginary jake in his brain who still calls him his boyfriend after they've broken up.
I mean... "his increasingly battered prettyboy ninja stud"
Like, not only does Caliborn use "his" to imply Jake's possessiveness, but Jake also gets so upset that he unlocks his latent powers because Dirk is in danger.
But yeah, still, wild people don't think Jake didn't "like" Dirk back....
Dave’s arc regarding Bro is about an abused child coming to terms with the fact that his guardian was abusive even if he wasn’t 100% a piece of shit all the time, while Rose’s arc regarding Mom Lalonde is about an abused child coming to terms with the fact that her guardian wasn’t 100% a piece of shit all the time even if she was abusive. But a lot of yall have trouble comprehending such nuanced portrayals of abuse and instead interpret these arcs to mean that Bro was the literal devil incarnate who couldn’t have possibly have cared about Dave in any capacity whereas Mom Lalonde was just a sweet lady trying her best and Rose was a problem child who was too harsh on her
My personal headcanons for the Alpha Kids careers if they like were able to complete their character arcs and weren't left in limbo when the comic ended.
Roxy: Indie game designer or freelance programmer. I can't see her tethered to a job. She would defo be self-employed. She has also dabbled in fanfiction, and I can see her seeking a creative outlet (Very much inspired by her dead Mom's creative works.) Roxy putting their elite gaming and programming skills to use, such as designing games or being a sort of coding nomad, just makes the most sense to me.
Jake: Keeping in mind the Snapchat credits. I think Jake establishes Skaia Net and retires in his twenties. He would set himself up to go globe-trotting. But then he realizes he doesn't actually enjoy adventuring every day and returns home to establish a movie studio, opting instead to produce movies. Because this boy loves movies. He helps finance Dave's early directorial career.
Jane: I mean, she would defo become a CEO. That is her lifelong dream, baby. However, I think she would likely pursue it at such an early age that she would seek fulfillment elsewhere and turn to philanthropy. And then fund and lobby in the political environment. However, this backfires, and she ends up usurped in a corporate coup. Not taking it lying down, she decides to dig up dirt on her enemies and ends up uncovering a worldwide conspiracy. That's when she discovers her love for investigative journalism and makes a pivot. (I just really want gumshoe Jane lmao)
Dirk: I don't know why everyone is sleeping on anthropologist Dirk (He was pretty much doing that with the Internet. This guy is fascinated by his ancestors' culture.) Anyway, Dirk would triple major in Anthropology, History, and Philosophy and become a college professor to lecture the youth. This kid wants to teach people so badly and hear himself talk. He would also start a podcast on the side to poke fun at pop culture.
i love when characters are liars. i love when they're vain. i love when they don't know how to communicate, or simply refuse to. i love when they cause problems for themselves and also other people that could've easily been avoided. i love when they're too stubborn for their own good and end up making things worse. i love when they're consumed by guilt and grief. i love when they want to die

Lil Hal gives directions
How the fandom sees Jake's relationship as 3 suitors vying for his affection like some sort of dating sim when the reality is something like Scott Pilgrim lmao.
A lovable dork who is a bit of a tool who struggles to reject the hopeless suitor (Jane) as he chases the affection of the emotionally unavailable love interest (Dirk). All the while, he has to go through hoops and obstacles via the splinters.
And Roxy is the best friend who tries to keep their friend accountable and will also reluctantly listen to their relationship drama.
Even though you can tell they would really rather do anything else but that.
"i guess...." Is so telling lmao. (Once again proving that they are still anti-DirkJake, but a great friend.)
Anyway, not a one-to-one scenario, obviously, but since people often don't understand the alpha kids' dynamic when it comes to Jake, I feel like this sort of spells it out.
A genuine question I have is, did the fandom forget about AR (Lil Hal) or what?
Oh you know

dirk is both one of the best and one of the most frustrating characters to analyze especially in a post epilogue world because at least 40% of what people say about him makes me think like. okay, well, you fell for it
jack reminded me of the AR age discourse and that was crazy from the start because it was always perfectly obvious to me that dirk and hal are both sixteen years old. they just feed each other the “we’re the same guy and one of us will be thirteen forever” line because they don’t want to admit that in the three years their minds have been separate they’ve grown into slightly different people. but apparently some people were taking that shit at face value, always a rookie mistake when dealing with dirk strider
God, I do think it's kind of funny how the Jake, Roxy, and Dirk love triangle is kind of ignored by the fandom at large because people want to paint Roxy and Dirk's friendship as morails or whatever.
Like Ro-Lalonde is trying to sabotage Dirk's chances with Jake before they enter the session. They are doing everything they can to get Jane to confess, and even slips up to Jake, mentioning that Jane has feelings, in an attempt to force his hand. They push Jane so hard to get her to confess that they out Dirk.
Although unbeknownst to Roxy, Jake has his own subconscious desires at play (he calls Jane's feelings' unrequited,' to Roxy ffs), and AR is doing his own thing.
It's great cause Roxy and Jake are playing checkers, while AR is playing chess, lol. But ignoring that... While it does partly have to do with Jane being her best friend, it also has to do with the fact that she is trying to eliminate Dirk's options, bruh. They really are "The" anti-DirkJake shipper.
I mean, if we were to take the trickster stuff into account, and how the Juju brings out the worst traits of the Alphas, then it's sufficient to say they didn't, in fact, get over Dirk, and couldn't care less about his relationship with Jake. (Which, yeah, like, they mention even before then, that they didn't believe Dirk and Jake would ever work. Which is a fair observation, but also I can't help but think it's also something they've been banking on too.)
Like, Roxy still engages in a metaphorical SA moment with Dirk, where he repeatedly tells them no. And Jake describes their actions as someone trying to steal his boyfriend right from under him. (Also, again, these two needed more screen time. Like I think they can have some good interpersonal conflicts given the chance, and how they both have similar issues with cowardice.)
God, Roxy is such an interesting character because while the majority of fandom tries to make them out to be this toothless good guy. They're pretty selfish. Like a masterclass of evading responsibility and not owning up to their actions to the people they need to actually apologize to. Like they confess all this to Jake, but Roxy never actually talks to Dirk about it. And their other examples include when they blew up Jane's computer. Or not apologizing to Jane about how they told Jake her feelings, or apologizing to Dirk for outing him to Jane, or apologizing to Dirk about Rping with Ar after he told them to stop, and so on.
I digress. They seem to be able to avoid responsibility for their actions due to their charm, but they genuinely care about their friends. Like, Roxy loves them so much, but they're a flawed teen, and honestly, they would have one of the best character arcs ever if they just gave them a juicy intrapersonal journey about how they avoid trying to feel guilty by not acknowledging them. Like they were on to something, and then Game Over happened.
