Okay but this is exactly what I’m talking about when I say that it’s corporations driving the Culture War. Like, if M&M corporation just redesigned its characters, no one would give a shit. But if M&M corporation announces that it’s redesigning it’s characters *to reflect DIVERSITY* or something like that, then they know that they can count on conservative commentators to performatively lose their shit about Wokeness and how it’s infesting every aspect of the culture and how the communists are trying to trans your M&Ms; and even better than that, they know that they can depend on snarky progressives to make fun of the conservatives for this and say that they want to fuck candy mascots. And so a complete non-story will have legs for days and go viral by playing the tribes against one another.

That’s precisely what this was really for, yes, but this type of thing, when it’s not to distract from an ugly controversy, is also just a money making plot because they know once the fox news clowns get fake-mad at something it’ll greatly increase sales with everyone else. There’s no better advertising than pissing off someone most people hate.
