I am sitting in my balcony, swinging. It's dark. It's past 11 and my lane seems quite. There are a few dogs barking, but they must be around the next corner. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been easy to think. Their barking, sometimes, wakes us up in the middle of the night. They're usually that loud. The smell of the earth is still lingering in the air. It had rained in the evening. I am pushing the swing with my leg, with closed eyes. It's so easy to breathe in the open. I think I will get a good sleep today. As I stop the swing to get off, I see a flicker of light. More like a twinkle of the stars, but bigger. If the moon were a star with a twinkle, it would look like this. I stress my eyes and see that it is our neighbour's balcony light peeping through the branches of a 'Savan' tree. It's so bright that I am in awe of it. It seems even more beautiful than the moon. So I sit again on the swing. I am thinking about how humans can always be hopeful with their capacity to make things out of nothing. Like, we could never go out of ideas. I am staring at the tree with these thoughts running in my head. I pushed my swing harder. And it seems like the light beyond the tree is playing peekaboo with me. There was this quiz that determined whether you are a 'beach person' or a 'Pahaad Premi,' or so on. My colleague had forwarded the quiz link, and because I am not a 'wanderer,' I wasn't sure what I liked until I visited Shimla.  I went for a hike in Shimla, and walking through the pine trees made me realize that I am neither a 'Pahaad Premi' nor a beach babe. I am a forest lover! I lost sense of time while hiking on that trail in absolute silence, of course, except for the loud chirping of the birds. Yes, their chirps seem loud when you are in a dense jungle. Coming back to the quiz, it asked me several personality questions, and I answered them honestly, like my preference actually depended on it. It didn't, but I wanted to check its accuracy. And I'm glad I did that, because it said, 'You love green forests more than anything. Take a trip to Kerala to enjoy long walks amidst the greens in solitude' (I think the quiz was a tourism company's campaign). Well, I have always liked the tall 'Bargad' trees and plants in general, so I thought, "yes, that is believable. But I also love rains, rivers, oceans, and falls, so I could be a 'beach babe' as well."  But then, the crackling sound of the dried leaves under my feet, the deafening silence of the forest, the pine cones, the feel of the bark which I am allergic to, the cool breeze, the wallflowers, the wildflowers, and most importantly, the peace with myself that I felt, the harmony with the woods in solitude; all of it confirmed the result of that quiz: I am a Nemophilist! Today, as the trees and plants of my home danced to the music of rain, I was again reminded of that beautiful, out of the way hike in Shimla. And as the rain poured, drenching my soul, making me giddy with happiness, I was once again confused between my love for the forest and rain. I let my mind muddle while I walked around the house, and finally decided that it doesn't matter. I shouldn't have opened the flaps of my diary together! I should have made it a bit swifter. I shouldn't have used the fountain pen. I forgot to write 'blue' and added it later. But that's all okay! When, with his small hands He let the rubik go Unsure, unwilling For his friend had tears.
