I know this is shocking for the whites (and the poc who lick their boots) to hear, but colonized poc are 100% entitled to the artifacts in museums that were stolen from them, including demanding that they give them back, and if that means that white museums then would be empty well CRY ME A FUCKING RIVER and next time think before building museums with nothing but stolen displays, bitches! Thatâs your fault, babes!
GIVE THE MOAI BACK TO RAPA NUI.
How is that shocking? Seems right.
Museums should operate on a strict exchange and borrowing rule - swapping collections and exchanging artifacts.
Give people their cultural artifacts back
Plus I see the people who worry about preservation of artifacts and while I think their hearts are in the right place, they need to understand that museums and archeologists arent unique to Europe and America?? Like do they really think that there are no people who can work on preserving and caring for the Moai who live there? Do they not know that there are museums in India? Do they doubt that indigenous people can be scientists and historians?
And tbh do they really think a bunch of old white people in Europe should get to decide what happens to important cultural artifacts? How would they feel if someone came into their house, stole all of their old family heirlooms and pictures, and kept them in a museum thousands of miles away where they and their family could likely never see them? And when they protested this theft the museum owners said âWell we are taking care of them!! If we gave them back they would fall apart and be lost!! We know how better to care for your family heirlooms than you do!! In fact you asking for them back is selfish and rude!! Their cultural importance is more valuable than your feelings about them!!â
Like how tf could anyone think thatâs ok?
I like this last addition.
The thing is, tumblr posts aside, nobodyâs actually requesting that museums give everything back. There are plenty of scientifically interesting household items, more secular pieces of art, and other cool archeological stuff that isnât 1. chunks of dead people or 2. a vital cultural touchstone for an extant, living culture.
Museums are in no danger of being stripped bare. Theyâre not even in danger of having nothing from those colonized cultures. (No, not even if we gave back every single piece of human remains, the one or two most famous artifacts, and all of the religious objects, which are the only things anybody tends to request back.)
What museums are faced with, potentially, is losing certain key pieces that draw the public. Itâs about money and prestige.
Frankly, I would rather see more museum displays with actual curation of smaller objects in context with maps/charts/dioramas than yet another Hodgepodge Of Bling room where the guiding principle is how ginormous or gold-encrusted the artifacts are. There are also plenty of replicas displayed in plenty of museums. If theyâre really so hot to have a moai display, they can always pay some local artist to make a modern version and include it in an exhibit on the spiritual significance of the originalsâin their historical context and in the modern day.
Just sayin
Whatâs happened in Flint is a crime against humanity.
